Obituary: C. (Curby) Wayne Morris Wayne died peacefully at home with family surrounding him on the afternoon of Sept. 20, 2015. He was born Aug 2, 1947 in Wagoner, Oklahoma to Curby Morris and Ruth Baker Morris at noon on the kitchen table (as he liked to tell it). He graduated from McLean High School, McLean, Texas in 1965 where he was a member of the Future Business Leaders of America and played the tenor saxophone in the high school band, the beginning of his lifelong love of music. In 1966 he married his high school sweetheart, Judith (Judy) Going. celebrated 49 years of marriage this year. He graduated from West Texas State University in Canyon, Texas in 1969 with a degree in secondary education and taught at Wheeler Junior High. The couple moved to the Houston area during the boom of the 1970s and Wayne found his true calling in Emergency Management Services at a time when ambulances were just beginning to move from being housed at funeral homes to hospitals and private companies. In 1997 he began his career with the Texas Department of Region 6/5 South in EMS and graduated from the University of Texas Science , Houston, Texas as an Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic in 1979. In 1983, he and his friend and peer, Jim Dunn, were instrumental in assisting the Honorable Lloyd Doddgett in passing the first Emergency Medical Services Law and Rules Act in the state of Texas. During his 25 year career with the Texas Department of , Region 6/5 South, the majority of which he served as the Program Director for the greater Houston/Beaumont area, he was a critical part of the development of EMS in the State. He was a member of EMS Update Leadership, Texas Department of State Services in 1984, recognized with the Bureau Chiefs Award, Texas Department of State Services in 1989, a member of the EMS Skills Proficiency Criteria Leadership, Texas Department of State Services in 1993, was the Texas Department of State Services Region 6 Employee of the Year in 1995, and was awarded the Texas Department of State Services Regional 1999 HEALTH Award (Honor, Excellence, Achievement, Leadership, Teamwork, ). In 2003 he received the Thelma Lemley Lifetime Achievement Award and retired from State service. One month later he began his 7 year tenure as the Executive Director of East Texas Gulf Coast Regional Advisory Council R where he served as the Governors Task Force Co-Chair - Licensure for Transfer Ambulances in 2004 and on the Medical Transport Providers Task Force in 2005. The RACs were established after 9/11 to help local communities prepare for response health services during a natural or manmade disaster. During his tenure, RAC-R developed the first Mobile Medical Unit in the state which has since become the prototype for MMUs in Texas. Active in First United Methodist Church, Rosenberg he served on the Staff Parish Committee, Board of Trustees, Nominations Committee, Chair of the Policy Committee, served as Treasurer , was a member of the Administrative Board and twice was Chair of the Administrative Board Chair. He was also a Laity Reader, Web Master and sang tenor in the Sanctuary Choir until his health began to decline. He was a of Dimes Block Volunteer and sang tenor with The Southernaires for years. The Southernaires was a gospel/country & western quartet made up of close friends and entertained throughout the Houston/Galveston area at church services, special events and social occasions for 2 decades. Music was always an important part of his life from gospel to classical, cultural (Irish/Scots) to Big Band, and instrumental to rock & roll. He was preceded in death by his parents, Curby and Ruth Morris, and his daughter-in-law, Yumi Kitamura Morris. He is survived by his high school sweetheart, Judy Morris of Weston Lakes, daughter Shanon Gonzales and son-in-law Christopher Gonzales of Katy, son Jaret Morris US Navy Command Master Chief and daughter-in-law Yumiko Morris of Japan, grandchildren Haruna and Erina Morris of Japan, Emily and Seth Gonzales of Katy, brothers and sisters -in-law Keith and Sharon Morris of Midland, Texas and Joe and Deborah Morris of Booneville, Arkansas, uncle and aunt William & Betty Baker of Del Rio, Tx. as well as cousins Donna Nimerick of Broken Arrow, Okla., Elaine Taylor of Hereford, Tx and Jim Baker of Shamrock, Tx., in addition to many nieces and nephews. Anyone who spent time with him heard about his family, his pride and joy! He reveled in their accomplishments and bragged about them to anyone within listening distance. Not given to flowery compliments, he showed his love and affection through acts of service. Gratitude goes to his care team, Dr. Corn & staff at M.D. Anderson. His last weeks were made more comfortable by the wonderful staff of Amazing Grace Hospice. Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross Disaster Services or the American Cancer Society. Obituary: Robert Eugene Morris, born 25, 1923, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was attending the University of Iowa in 1942 when he enlisted in the aviation cadet program and was called to active duty 3 1943. He trained with the Class of 44-C graduating and being commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant at Aloe Army Air Field, Victoria, Texas, 12 1944. His initial assignment was to the First Air Force, Fighter Command, via Camp Springs, Maryland with gunnery training at Millville Army Air Field, New Jersey, where the remained as a P-47 gunnery instructor until 1944. Assigned overseas, he joined the 371st Fighter Group, 405th Fighter Squadron in 1945 and flew sixty-four combat missions dive-bombing, strafing, escort, armed recce, and fighter sweeps before being retuned to the ZI, via England. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in 1945 and separated from the service in of that year. In 1948, he returned to active duty at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois and the Communications Officers Course. In this new field he joined the newly formed United States Air Force Security Service, Brooks AFB, Texas; a tour in Alaska, 1949-50, a special activities assignment near Indian Springs, Nevada, 1952; a North-African experience in Libya, 1953-56; coupled with flying a B-25 and a C-47 in oneÂs spare-time was a real pleasure. In 1956, a return to full-time flying was scheduled at Mather AFB, California, the T-29 navigation trainer was a comfortable aircraft to fly and the Squadron Adjutants desk was included. Instrument Pilot Instructor school was completed and it also had a desk attached; however, Command-Pilot was achieved in 1959. Duty at Hdqtrs., Air Training Command, Randolph AFB, Texas followed in 1960 as a Missile Operations Staff Officer of Advanced Planning in the DCS/Technical Training. Various projects of Weapon Systems Development and Training were participated in to insure all aspects of training were identified to an appropriate level for successful mission completion. In 1964, a move to overseas in the 498th Tactical Missile Group, Kadena AB, Okinawa, resulted in operational-readiness training and management development with PACAF and other integrated forces of SAC. The next move was to the 90th Strategic Missile Wing, Cheyenne, Wyoming, as part of the Strategic Air Command. During this period he received the Master Missileman Badge and was selected to Command, 90th Communications/Electronics Squadron in support of missile operations and the Base Communications. In 1968, 15th Air Force Headquarters requested he take the job of Deputy Director for Communications/Electronics at AFB, California where served until his retirement in 1970. While at 15th AF Hdqrts, he was the C/E representative on the IG team, was promoted to Colonel USAFR in 1969, and worked on numerous communications/electronics projects associated with command/control, airborne command post, and other telecommunications developments. Subsequently, the 15th AF established a Communications/Electronics Maintenance Award, in his name, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to management and developmental programs associated with the field. Release from active duty allowed him to pursue an interest in Freemasonry and is a member in good standing with his Blue Lodge, Scottish Rite Bodies Â- 32ú Knight Commander of the Court of Honor, York Rite Bodies Â- a Knight in the York Rite , a Shriner, and a member of the Royal Order of Scotland. In his community, he has served as secretary and vice-president of Water District #10 for twelve 12 years. He is married to Barbara Ann Flores and they have two 2 children, Kimberly Ann and Craig Jude Morris. A previous marriage to Ruth Dorothy Seelig ended when she succumbed to multiple-myeloma in 1975 and, an earlier union created two 2 daughters, Patricia Ann Cava and Donna Jeanne McKenna. HeÂs a life-member in the Order of Daedalians, TROA, ROA, DAV, and Eagle Scout Association. Also a member of the P47 Thunderbolt Pilots Association. He is a resident of San Antonio, Texas. |
