Obituary: Lester Eugene Les Moreland passed into the arms of his Holy Father on 30, 2014. Les was born on Dec. 14th 1924 to John F. and Mary E. (Moyer) Moreland in his Grandmothers home in Camp Hill, PA. Les was the second of three children; an older brother, the Reverend F. Elwood Woody Moreland (1921~2004), and a younger sister, Ruth E. (Moreland) Sweitzer (1935). Les was raised in the Harrisburg, PA and Washington, DC areas and graduated from East View High School in Wash., DC. He played Varsity Football and Baseball and was active in the band, playing the Trombone. graduating, Les took a position driving for Horton Truck Lines delivering sensitive and classified cargo for the U.S. government and continued to work there until volunteering for service in the U.S. Marine Corps at the outbreak of WWII. Les reported to the Marines in Parris Island, SC and then was transferred to the 5Th Division Marines in Camp Pendleton, CA for 5 months of specialty training. He joined the 5th Division Marine Corps Band at this location and continued to be assigned duties that utilized his musical talents on the Slide Trombone in ceremonial and entertainment support of the troops. He then transferred via San Diego, CA to Camp Tarawa, Hawaii where he was assigned to the 26th Headquarters Division. He spent 5 months training and preparing at Camp Tarawa and then left for the Pacific Islands Campaigns via Pearl Harbor. His first stop was in the Marshall Islands and then on to the battles in Saipan and Tinian. From there he proceeded to Iwo Jima and took part in the assault and capture of the island. Following Iwo Jima he proceeded north up the island chains with the 5th Division and was awaiting orders off Sasabo Island (western Japan) when Japan surrendered. Les was assigned to occupational duties in several areas of Japan for the remainder of his service. While on this assignment he was often called upon to play for regimental and ceremonial engagements with the Marine Corps Band. His worn and well traveled Trombone case, with its many Marine Corps and world location stickers on it, is a family treasure. On his return to the states he was assigned again to Camp Pendleton, CA where he continued service to the Marine Corps in Support and Administrative duties, along with continuing to perform with the regimental Marine Band. Early in his military service, the Marine Band assignments took him to many locations in Southern California, one of which was a concert at the Palladium Ballroom in Los Angeles, where he met a very nice girl named Dottie Hall. Needless to say, Les took every opportunity to return to the Los Angeles area on assignments and with his weekend passes to see the love of his life and future wife Dorothy Dottie E. (Hall) Moreland. were wed in of 1946, shortly before his discharge from the Marines. Les and Dottie settled in Southern CA and proceeded to make a life and plans for a future family together. The both worked hard to gather a small nest-egg to purchase their first house in Van Nuys and along the way welcomed their first child, Joyce, in 1949. A son, John, followed in 1951 and Les continued to work hard to provide for their growing family. Along the way Les met several influential people who counseled him and provided contacts that allowed him to further his career in sales, landing him a position with the DuPont Co. in the Automotive Products Division. Les knew this market very well and built a large and loyal customer base that allowed him to excel in this career path and set many sales records that remained unbroken to the end of DuPonts marketing of these products. Along with this added income and stability came a few more family additions; Melissa in 1954 and James in 1957. Les was offered numerous advancements and promotions throughout these years, along with transfers to new locations including, Van Nuys, San Diego, Belmont, Canoga Park and finally Orange, CA. Les and Dottie found new homes in each, and continued to provide a loving and caring environment for their family through all of these transitions to new locations. When DuPont decided to leave the automotive market in the late 1970s Les was offered a transfer to the newly formed Electronics Division, he was the only employee in the old division offered this opportunity. Les loved the new challenges and set to work learning electronics theory and forming strategies to support and market to this growing segment of electronic manufacturers offering the devices we now take for granted in our daily lives. He continued to move up the corporate ladder and take on more marketing, support and management responsibilities as the division flourished and the markets grew. Numerous times DuPont attempted to lure Les to the East Coast headquarters to take a Sr. Management position, but he did not want to uproot his family from their schools and home, so he politely declined and instead continued to lead the development and marketing efforts in the Western States divisions from the Orange area. Les was very active in his church, Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Orange, CA, served on the local educational board, advised and coached for the local Little League, and served on many industry panels and advisory boards in many elected positions. Les also taught electronics process courses at UC-Irvine as a Sr. representative of the Electronics Manufacturers of America Counsel. Les retired from DuPont in the late 90s, but that wasn quite the end of his electronics career. Les accepted an offer from Swiss based Ciba Geigy Ltd. to head their marketing efforts to bring several new generation electronic processes to the U.S. market. Les formed marketing strategies for Ciba Specialty Chemicals group and successfully employed their products in most of the major electronic manufacturers specifications and processes throughout his tenure with them. When the Ciba division was sold continued... |
