This is My Story by Harvey Moore Christ said, Go home and tell your friends what great things the Lord has done for you. I was born in Kansas City, Missouri. My father was a plastering contractor and for work reasons he moved us to Southern California when I was eleven. I had a paper route in La Mesa. There was a Baptist minister that I delivered the paper to each morning. I had that paper route for about a year. Each month I would sit in his living room and listen to a story that was fresh and new to me. He gave me something that has meant more through the years than anything anyone has ever given me. For the first time I heard the story of Gods plan of salvation for every human being, and most especially for me. I am really not sure whether my true walk with Christ began at that time or later, in a desert experience which I will share with you now. My high school friend, Jack, and I decided to take a trip to the desert for a two-week stay. Instead of the sunshine we expected, it poured down rain! We were forced to mostly stay inside the tent for cover. What to do with all the time on our hands? Fortunately one of us had thought to bring a supply of comic books, which we eagerly devoured. But soon we had read through them all. I reached down into the duffel bag hoping to find more comic books, and instead came up with a small Gideon Bible of all things! Neither of us had ever read any of the scriptures before but felt that it wouldn hurt us. all, what else did we have to do? Jack and I were both majoring in public speaking, so we read aloud to one another. It seemed that as we read.I believe it was from the Gospel of John. another voice seemed to break through. I think both Jack and I eventually had the conviction that God was somehow speaking to us through what we were reading. A few mornings later we woke up to find that the storm clouds had cleared, and there was a beautiful blue desert sky with brilliant sunshine. I can still remember Jacks words, as we yawned and stretched in the suns warmth. He said, I know what I am going to do with my life. Im going to be a minister. Strangely enough, this was also my own inner conviction and I said: THAT MAKES TWO OF US! Upon graduation from high school, God had plans for my life, and so did my country. The Second World War was still in progress and I was drafted into the Armed Forces to serve in the Infantry. the war was over, I was discharged, and I entered college. Before I was able to finish my four years of college, however, the Korean War came along and my status in the inactive reserves caused me to be taken into the Army again. I was in my late twenties before I was able to return to college and graduate. A few more years passed before I entered Seminary. During this time I was a religious director of an International Christian Youth Organization and served as a non-ordained Associate Pastor in a church. Another thing happened shortly before I entered Seminary that has been of paramount importance in my life. I met a young lady by the name of Joan, married her, and she has made all the difference in my life. Joan has been a constant companion, friend, mentor, and a source of help, inspiration and strength to me. My ministry and life would have been much less without her by my side. Upon graduation from San Francisco Theological Seminary in 1961, I received my first call as Assistant Minister of the large First Presbyterian Church of Orange, California. This was to be just the beginning of Gods mysterious guidance and even intervention in leading us to the various parishes we would serve for about forty years of pastoral ministry. While in Orange, we received an unexpected check in the mail and decided to take a vacation. We didn have any definite plans, but a picture of beautiful mountains came suddenly to my mind I said to Joan, We e going to Colorado. While at a small motel there, we were preparing to go to bed when there was a knock on the door. The manager, to whom I had mentioned that I was a minister, was there with an Elder on the local continued... |
