Obituary: Leona F. Minor, age 91, departed this life on 2, 2013. Lea, as she was known, was born on 2, 1922 in New Hampton, MO, the only child of Carter Christie Hesseltine and Bertha Clark Hesseltine. Her mother, Bertha, died at the tender age of 23 when Lea was only 17 months old. In her early years she lived with and was raised by her Clark grandparents. Once in grade school she lived with her father on his farm in Martinsville. When she was ready for high school, she moved back to New Hampton to attend Bethany High School and lived with her aunt and uncle, Mabel and Lem Parks. While in high school Lea met Wayne Minor whose father was pastor of First Baptist Church in Bethany. Following her graduation in 1940, they were married and she joined Wayne at William Jewell in Liberty, MO. graduation they lived in Louisville, KY where Wayne was a student at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Following graduation they began their long military career, first in the US Army, followed by service in the Chaplain Service of the U.S. Air Force. Their first child, Sandra Kay, was born during their time in seminary in 1944. Their second daughter, Judith Ann, was born in 1948 in St. Joseph during their brief break in military service. A third daughter, Nancy Jane, was born in 1949 during their Air Force assignment at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, OH. Lea was a military wife in the best sense of the word, moving their family from one assignment to another at the drop of a hat and always making a lovely home wherever they landed. She became an expert at packing up the household and traveling overseas, usually by herself since Wayne went in advance, with a baby, a toddler and a 5 year old in tow. As they grew up, her daughters loved to hear her tell of these adventures (and they thought she might have been the original Wonder Woman!). Leas first overseas assignment to Korea was an experience never to be forgotten. She particularly enjoyed their early years in the Air Force when they lived in England and Germany. During their later assignment to Germany when the children were grown, they traveled throughout Europe and enjoyed all the beautiful sights it had to offer. As Waynes career progressed, Lea became more involved in the communities they served in. She worked tirelessly in the chapel programs doing whatever needed to be done. She had a beautiful singing voice and was in the choir every without fail. She served the Red Cross as a Gray Lady, as president of the Officers Wives Club and in any other capacity where she was needed. Lea was amazingly talented in creative endeavors and was also an energy force to be reckoned with. She had a flair for decorating, could sew anything, do all kinds of handiwork, and was a fabulous cook. She loved to entertain in her homes and hosted high ranking officials and dignitaries during their second assignment to Germany and in Washington, D.C. witnessed history first hand while living in Washington when President Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. It was a memorable time to be living in the nations capital, made even more so by attending services at Washington National Cathedral, open air concerts at the Tidal Basin, visits to Mount Vernon and all of the historical sites in the area. Lea and Wayne retired in 1974 after 30 years of service in the Air Force. The first few years they traveled the country in a motor home, always on the go and loving every minute of it. finally landed in Florida where Wayne eventually took a church and Lea was once again in the position of preachers wife. ministered to their flock and Wayne also served as a hospice chaplain until the age of 83, when they made the difficult decision to turn the church, whose congregation they had grown together, over to a new leader. It was time to sit back, relax and smell the roses. A move was made from Florida to Savannah, GA, where they lived near daughter, Judy, and her husband, Joe, overlooking the golf course. spent six years in Savannah where Wayne passed away in 2009, just short of his 89th birthday. Lea then moved to Macon, GA, where daughters Sandy and Nancy lived and she was happy to be so close to two of her daughters. Lea lived a wonderful, full life and could have filled a book with all her unique and memorable experiences. She was dearly loved in life and will be forever missed by those left to cherish and honor her memory. are her daughters, Sandy Smith of Macon, GA, Judy Villari and husband, Joe, of Birmingham, AL and Nancy Fullilove of Waterloo, Iowa; her beloved grandsons, Tony Fullilove and wife, Dee, of Waterloo, Iowa and Todd Villari and wife, Keely, and beloved great-grandchildren, Alexander, Lauren Olivia and Ava Sophia, all of Birmingham, AL; beloved cousins and lifelong friends, Ted Stevenson and wife, Gloria, of New Hampton, Bill Stevenson and wife, Sandy, of Montgomery, AL, Jim Drake and wife, Jan, of Sun City West, AZ and Chet Parks and wife, Jean, of Tucson, AZ; beloved sister-in-law, Jewell Minor Smith of Springfield, MO and nephews, Barry, Doane, Craig and Alan Smith of Springfield; beloved niece, Susanne Minor Turquette of Rapid City, SD; and special friends, Betty Stewart and family of San Antonio, TX, and all those from near and far along the way. Celebration of Life , 11, 2013 10:00 A.M. Porter Loring North Chapel She will be laid to rest with her beloved husband of 69 years at Fort Sam Houston National . Lea is now reunited with all her loved ones who went before, and singing the praises of her Heavenly Father in that angelic choir. Hallelujah and amen. Perhaps they are not stars, but rather openings in heaven where the love of our lost ones continued... |
