Obituary: Douglas Ernest Mierl II, 75, passed away peacefully at home with his family on 11, 2016. He was born to Douglas and Anna Mierl in New Orleans, Louisiana on 17, 1940. Doug took on cancer like he did with any adversity in life, without fear. Until the end, each day he looked forward to the chatter and smiles of family that surrounded him. He said it was better than medicine and provided great comfort. He was a family man who reveled in his 14 grandchildren. At just 12 years old, he entered boarding school at Concordia High School, the predecessor of Concordia (now University) in Austin. There, Doug studied the bible and knew it well. He played every sport offered. At a Concordia basketball game against Austin High, he met Carolyn Studtman when they were 15 years old. a few years of dating, they married in 1960, and while Doug was at the University of Texas at Austin they had their first son, Steven, in 1962. Doug graduated in 1964 with degrees in Math and Engineering. His first job after UT was with Control Data Corporation as a systems engineer. With CDC, they moved to St. Paul, Minnesota and Washington D.C. In 1967, homesick and tired of cold weather, Doug and Carolyn moved home to Austin. In the next few years, a daughter (Stacey) and two more sons (Shaun and Seth) were born. Back in Austin, Doug took the reigns of the family business, Studtman Photo Service. With unrelenting drive and innovation, Doug reworked the business and renovated the store to be the premiere photographic shop in Austin, during a period when 35mm cameras and photography were at their height in American culture. At Studtman, Doug was a true leader and provided training and jobs for scores of people from all backgrounds and walks of life. He held court with his friends, worked hard, and made a good living by doing what was right. He ran the store until his "retirement" in 1993. During this same time, Doug coached his sons and hundreds of kids through Little League Baseball with the same drive, intensity and dedication. Many of his teams claimed championships, and most of all he served as a mentor to young people through youth sports. Carolyn died of cancer in 1998, at a young age of 57. His deep felt loss would lead him to the next chapter in his life. Long time friends invited Doug to their ranch in Colorado. This visit turned into fifteen summers at 9000ft. serving as a ranch foreman, building out the facilities and infrastructure, work he loved. Through these friends, Doug was introduced to D'Maris Lumpkin Allen, who would, after a short courtship, become his second wife. Doug quickly became the patriarch for his new, extended family. Doug and Dee spent summers in Colorado and winters in Austin/Round Rock. remodeled a house in Round Rock, and traveled and enjoyed a life together for over 15 years. Doug was a true renaissance man. He could build, disassemble, and rebuild anything. Mechanical or electronic, it did not matter. He built machines, houses, buildings, bridges (not an embellishment), baseball fields, businesses, and more. He was a photographer and self-taught oil painter of detailed western and nature scenes. Doug could play all sports. He was known to water ski and go straight downhill on the snow. He broke horses, rode motorcycles, captained boats, cooked, mastered complex math equations, hunted, and above all, was a master fisherman. He loved fishing of every and any sort, and the fish can now rest easier at night. About the only things he could not do were sing on key or wait in line at a restaurant! He is predeceased by his parents, brother, Laurence, and first wife Carolyn. He is survived by his wife Dee; children, Steven and Cara Mierl (Hayden and Tanner), Stacey and Terry Hull (Tyler, Carter and Kalen), Shaun and Julie Mierl (Trevor and Trent), and Seth and Jennifer Mierl (Drew and Carson) all of Austin; Greg and Mariana Allen (Fair, Samantha, Valerie, and Nathan), Rebecca and David Paxton (Luke), Laura Allen; sisters and brothers in law, Gayle and Robert Francke, Kathy and Pete Mayo, and numerous special nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 A.M. , 14, 2016 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1500 W. Anderson Lane, Austin, Texas 78757. Memorial donations may be made to Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation, www.tpwf.org. |
