Valeska was born Jan. 19, 1919 (1-19-1919) - a date she enjoyed reciting. She married Cleburne H. Meyer Jan. 19, 1941, and they shared their wedding anniversary date with Valeskas parents, Louis and Frieda (Seelk) Ewald.
Born at home on her parents farm east of Seguin, the 2nd of 7 siblings and the oldest daughter, Valeska found herself helping to raise her 5 younger siblings. She completed the 11th grade at Dowdy School where she was a star basketball player and was devastated when her parents moved west of Seguin to the Marion community before her graduation as she left many childhood friends and acquaintances. Despite not graduating from high school, she became a Draughns Business graduate.
As a lifelong member of Emanuels Lutheran Church, she taught School during her younger years and remained active in Ladies Aid throughout her adult life. She and Cleburne helped in the organization of the Guadalupe Youth Show and were active members of the American Legion H. U. Wood Post 245 in Seguin, where she was a lifetime member and member of the Auxiliarys Past Presidents Club. Valeska served as an adult 4-H leader while her children were active in 4-H. During the Guadalupe Fair, she could be found in the womens building helping to facilitate judging of the different entries. She became a volunteer in the senior citizens Silver when it opened, but volunteering at the Christian Cupboard food pantry developed into a true passion in her later years. She so enjoyed the people with whom she worked and the people she served.
In her free time, she worked on the farm she and Cleburne owned outside Marion, was a dedicated homemaker, an accomplished 9 and 10 pin bowler into her 90s, an artist, an avid Spurs fan, a lover of crossword puzzles, a frequent traveler and she shared her passion for reading with her children and grandchildren. In her 80s, she was extremely proud of the fact that her ability to bake homemade cinnamons rolls became legendary for, as an auction item, she helped raise funds for multiple non-profit organizations.
The much loved wife, mother, sibling and Mommo was preceded in death by Cleburne, her husband of 48 years; her parents; brothers Martin Ewald, Helmuth Ewald (and wife, Elfrieda), Robert Ewald, and Jesse Ewald (and wife, Velma); sister-in-law Glendora Ewald, and brothers-in-law Delvin Meyer, Donald Boeder and Roland Krueger.
Survivors include her daughters Diane Tyo (and husband Doug), Karen Weinstein (and husband Sam), and son Lynn Meyer (and wife, Debbie). Also, she is survived by a brother Fred Ewald and sister Viola Krueger; and sisters-in-law Kathleen Boeder, Lucille Ewald and Evelyn Meyer. In addition, she will be missed by 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren where she was a star basketball player, along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers are Craig, Stephen and Kevin Meyer; Randy Ruedrich Jr.; Jeremy Weinstein; and Zachary Todd. Honorary pallbearers are Aaron Atkinson and Austen Murphy.
The family would like to thank the staff and residents of Argent Court assisted living for their care and support; caregivers Norida, Lucy, Rosie and Tina and the staff of Heart-to-Heart Hospice.
