Obituary: Dorothy Patricia McKinney passed away early in the morning of May 29th a few hours after her 80th birthday from the complications of AlzheimerÂs disease. She would wish to be fondly remembered by the hundreds of young people upon whose lives she strove to make a positive impact in a long career of working with students. Pat was born Brooklyn, New York, grew up on Long Island and graduated from Saint JosephÂs in Brooklyn. Her librarian credentials were earned at the University of Rhode Island, and Texas WomenÂs . Subsequently she earned more scholastic credits at Incarnate Word . Early career experiences included a stint at AT&T Long Lines headquarters during the historical period when coaxial cable was being laid across the nation to make network television possible; as an editorial assistant on a magazine in Houston; and as a member of the Special Events Department of FoleyÂs Department Store in Houston. Her work with young people began with teaching preschool classes at the Museum of Science and History in Fort Worth. Moving to San Antonio, she taught at the Jewish Community and the grade school of Holy Spirit Catholic Church before appointment as Librarian of Incarnate Word High School, the position from which she ultimately retired. She was an active member and office holder in Bexar and Catholic Library associations. A life-long Catholic, wherever she lived she was an active participant in church activities, assisting at mass and participating in C.C.D. programs. Pat was noted for an inward and outward beauty, unfailing good humor and a gentle outgoing nature even as the debilitating disease progressively destroyed her physical and mental health. Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Travis McKinney; son, Barrett McKinney; daughter-in-law, Arlene McKinney; granddaughters, Megan and Morgan McKinney of San Antonio; grandchildren, C. J., Joshua and Danielle Gomez; daughter, Claire McKinney of Austin; daughter, Ceil McKinney and son-in-law, Rev. Joe McManus of Shiner. The family would like to extend their deep appreciation to the staffs of Vitas Innovative Hospice , Incarnate Word Extended and Brighton Gardens for loving care provided, and to Father John OÂDonoghue, Pastor of Blessed Sacrament Church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the AlzheimerÂs Association, South Central Texas Chapter, 7400 Louis Pasteur, San Antonio, TX 78229. Family services pending. |
