Obituary: W. H. Buddy McDonald, born 10, 1930, Texarkana, Texas; passed away 4, 2015 at the age of 84 in Houston, Texas. Buddy graduated from Texas High School, Texarkana, Texas in 1948, a member of the Tiger football team, coached by Watty Meyers. He attended the University of North Texas, but his education was interrupted by the Korean Conflict in 1950, joining the United States Coast Guard, serving on a destroyer escort in the Gulf of Mexico and as the aide to Captain Lehmey of the 8th Naval District in New Orleans. Captain Lehmey urged Buddy to attend officers training school in Newport, Connecticut, however, that would extend his service in the Coast Guard. While in New Orleans he attended Tulane University. When discharged from service, he returned to the University of North Texas graduating in 1954. He and his good friend John Travis Kelly were employed by National Supply (drilling rig equipment) and entered the executive training program. He ended his tenure with National Supply in Beaumont to return to Houston and soon became top sales representative for Parker Brothers Shell and Concrete. He loved to tell stories about the Parker brothers, who were all tugboat captains as well as owners of one of the largest concrete suppliers in Houston in the late 1950s. He began his long successful career in the home building industry in 1959 continuing until retirement in 2004. His master craftsmanship was evident in the details of his homes in the west Houston area, northwest Harris and West University Place. Buddy enjoyed so many hobbies, including the rebuilding from propeller to tail his 150-B airplane and then piloting his plane over the southeast Gulf Coast, often buzzing airfields. As a young boy, he and his father spent many a cool day in Texarkana hunting quail and dove with their beloved birddogs, Trouble and Roxie. Many a story was told about these fond times, as well as his hunting expeditions in South Texas later in life. Buddy was an avid golfer playing many rounds at his favorite course, Jackrabbit at Champions Golf Club and Braeburn Country Club with lifelong friend, Dr. Donald G. Rochelle. Many friendships were made on golf courses which lasted throughout his life. His golfing days ended with the diagnosis of multiple myeloma in the fall of 2004. For ten and one-half years he fought a courageous battle against this cancer, always with optimism and hope. He and his myeloma oncologist, Dr. Donna M. Weber, shared a special relationship the diagnosis he developed a keen new interest - email and iTunes. The great communicator - always in touch with friends and family. Not a day went by that he did not correspond with friends or talk on the phone. He spent many hours at the computer listening to his favorite music and hymns. He said many times a persons best asset is his friends He was very proud of his grandchildren and their accomplishments. Known for his many funny stories, he always made them laugh telling of escapades in Texarkana as a youth with his friends and later during college days. He brought laughter wherever he went. Buddy was predeceased by his mother Ethel Ellen Williams McDonald, father Samuel Rufus McDonald of Texarkana and his beloved Yorkshire Terrier, Taffi. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Sharon Metcalf McDonald, daughter Tracy and her husband Marco Zaidenweber, grandson Stefan Zaidenweber and granddaughter Arianna Zaidenweber of Houston, son Blake McDonald of Richmond, and step-daughter Ashley and her husband Sean Gregory and grandsons Noble Reeves, Jordan Gregory and Travis Gregory of Cypress. Buddy is also survived by his sister Martha Jay (Sissy) and her husband Morriss Granberry of Texarkana, Texas, niece Judy and husband Bill Daley of Fort Worth, nephew Gary Judd and wife Jean of Krum and their son Justin Judd. Also by great nephew Nathan Daley and wife Vanessa of Fort Worth and their children, and great niece Camille Pierce and husband Cade Pierce of Keller, TX. and their children. Also survived by brother-in-law and wife James P. Hunter III and Elaine, of Lufkin, TX. his daughter Jennifer Hunter Walz and sons Hunter and Harrison, of Houston, TX. his son W. Lee Hunter and companion Andrea Hale of Clear Lake, TX. He also leaves cousin Don Williams and wife Nellie of Richland Hills, plus his many friends. Buddy was a member of Memorial Drive United Methodist Church, Kappa Alpha Order, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Lifetime member, and former member of the Greater Houston Builders Association. His favorite time of the week was arriving at church long before the early service, waiting in his parking space enjoying the peace of an early morning. The family is forever indebted to Dr. Weber, Tiffany Richards,ANP and the myeloma department staff for their exemplary care and treatment of Buddy throughout his journey at M. D. Anderson, as well as the caring staff at Buckner Parkway Place Hospice. A memorium in honor of Buddy can be sent to M. D. Anderson Cancer , 1515 Holcombe Blvd., Houston, Texas 77030, or the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, 383 Main Avenue, 5th Floor, Norwalk, CT 06851. Obituary: Vestal Opal McDonald passed away quietly in her sleep on 20, 2015. She was 93 years old. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. , Jan. 23, and her memorial service will take place 10 a.m. , Jan. 24, both at Connelly Compton in Waco. Interment and a brief graveside service will follow mid-afternoon at Murphree in Evant. Rev. Kevin Harrison will officiate. Vestal was born Oct. 1, 1921, in Levita, Texas, to Jewel Griffin and Silas Squyres. She grew up there and enjoyed reminiscing about country life and memories of her neighbors and siblings despite her enduring heartbreak over losing her beloved sister, Blanche, who died before her twelfth birthday. Vestal graduated from Ireland High School where she was a valuable member of the girls basketball team (she was the tallest). In 1942, Vestal became a World War II bride upon marrying longtime friend and hometown boy Arvin Arthur McDonald, who would remain her husband until his death 61 years later. The war years were difficult for the young couple, Vestal following Arvin from army base to base until he shipped out to Europe. weathering this hardship, the couple settled first in the farming community, Mound, where their oldest child and only son was born, and then in Gatesville where two girls joined the family. Later the family resided in Lorena, Waco, Irving and lastly in Woodway. Vestal was co-owner and manager of Arvins surveying business, and became an enthusiastic late-in-life college girl, studying English, library science, accounting and nursing over the years. She was a respected member of her communities, devoted to her faith, her family and her home. Vestal loved roses, tending her bushes like a brain surgeon as long as she was able. Tragedy struck the family when middle daughter, Lois Elizabeth, was in a fatal car crash at 17, then again several years later when son, Arvin Mark, returned from service in Vietnam only to also die in an auto accident. Vestals character and trust in God miraculously sustained her, and she and Arvin raised their remaining child, Annette Dawn, with love and faith. Vestal is also preceded in death by sisters Ozealia, Christine, Agnes and Sarah, and her parents. She is survived by brother, Samuel Victor, as well as Annette and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staffs of Lakeshore Estates, Phoenix and Providence Hospice for their kindness and care. More than anyone in recent years, friend Betty Orton was her selfless guardian angel and has surely earned a special place in heaven. Donations in Vestals and Arvins names may be made to Victorious Life Church. |
