Obituary: Major Martin Lloyd McCarley Jr, passed away peacefully in the presence of his family on May 15th, 2016,in Austin, Texas. Born to Martin Lloyd Sr and Mildred Myrtis McCarley in Columbia, South Carolina on 20th, 1932, he had celebrated his recent 84th birthday. As a man who has a relationship with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, we know that his time on earth is not an end, but a beginning. Although he retired in Austin, Texas, his early years were spent in South Carolina. He attended The Citadel, The Military of South Carolina in Charleston, as an underclassman cadet. He then completed his BA at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, his home city. In college he was an active member of his fraternity, Sigma Nu, and yet found time to work as a page for the South Carolina Legislature at the Capital building. It was his time serving in the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) at college, which set him on a career in the United States Air Force and moved him out of the Carolinas. He served 22 years as an American military officer, retiring with the rank of Major. While serving as a young officer at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery Alabama, he met and married the love of his life, Claudia Joan Jenkins, on 1, 1957. For over 58 happy years they were husband and wife. Together they resided in a number of cities before settling in Austin, Texas with their five children. He was blessed to have ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He is survived by his devoted wife, Claudia, Cris and Kim Johnston, Lloyd and Brenda McCarley, David and Tracie McCarley, Scott and McCarley, Trent McCarley and Linda Wiggers. Once in Texas, Marty made the state his home. He earned a Master in Business Administration fromTexas State University in San Marcos, Texas, one of several fine universities in the Austin area. In addition to the excellent educational opportunities, Austin is known for its sports and recreation, in which he actively participated. He was an avid runner, cyclist, and triathlete; participating in many races and events over the years, earning his fair share of awards. He later picked up golf as his favorite exercise, which he occasionally played with his children as partners. It was on his 80th birthday, playing golf with his five children, that he had his first and only hole-in-one. His was a genteel manner, reminiscent of a southern hospitality, given with a slight South Carolina accent that never completely disappeared. For a short period of time after retirement, he was a gentleman rancher in the nearby town of Georgetown, Texas. He had a few sheep and goats, watched over by a large white Pyrenees and an English sheepdog. However, he never liked to send animals to market; instead he added a small volunteer herd of white tail deer to his daily livestock feeding. It was part of his gentle nature to care for and appreciate those around him. Eventually he returned to the big city of Austin and the neighborhood where he had raised his children. All of whom have settled in the city and who were close at hand for his final goodbye. |

Obituary: The spirit of Joseph Jodie W. McCarley left his body on 24, 2003 at the age of 96 years. Jodie was born in Roswell, New Mexico on 1, 1907. He was a year old when his father, Patrick Joseph McCarley, a barber and his mother Lily Hamm McCarley, a homemaker, moved the family to San Antonio. Although Jodie came from humble beginnings, he accomplished a tremendous amount by stubborn determination, very hard work, a gregarious personality, and a lot of natural talent. He was an athlete and businessman. While attending DeZavala Grammar School, he earned 10 cents an hour on s in a local dairy scrubbing milk cans. Eventually he helped make brick ice cream. He had a job going from door to door handing out KelloggÂs cereal samples. He raised rabbits which he sold to a local store. During WWI, he collected fares for the Jacobs Jitney Service and collected peach pits which were used to make gas masks. In high school, he often worked two jobs while attending school because, at fifteen, he had become the breadwinner of the family of four after his parents divorced. Even though he worked and went to school, he still managed to compete in athletic events winning the Boys All-Around Championship Decathlon at the YMCA in 1921. From 1922 to 1925, he was an all city basketball, baseball, football, and track star. He was also assistant and, later, athletic director of playgrounds for the City Parks and Recreation Department. In 1925, he played professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians. discovering that salaries were low, he decided to return to San Antonio where in , 1929, his story begins to read as a virtual Horatio Alger tale. having worked as manager for two ice cream companies, he decided to work for and manage a business of his own making. With only $90.00 in machinery and supplies, he began producing Knight Club Ginger Ale in the back of the garage of the family house. With the help of his mother and sister, he bottled 20 cases per hour. He delivered the finished product in an old Ford coupe. His little business survived the depression and in 1930 he acquired the 7-Up and Hires franchises. By 1934, he had five routes serviced by five used trucks and was using the entire house. In the same year, he was given one of the first Pepsi-Cola franchises. Pepsi Cola became very popular quickly and by the mid 1950Âs, Jodie employed 60 people and had built a new production facility at Euclid and Locust. He had married Odelia Brown in 1946 and by 1950 she, along with his sister, Jewel, were working in the business helping it to grow. By 1965, he needed yet a larger facility. The business moved into a large modern building which Jodie and Odelia had built on a 10 acre tract on Director Dr. In 1969, the business changed courses and went into the innovative Âcontract packing. By this time, JodieÂs daughter, Martha, and son-in-law, Steve Hixon, had joined the company. Over the years, the company produced Âhouse brand beverages for Kroger, AlbertsonÂs, Handy Andy and H.E.B. as well as Dr. Pepper, A&W Root Beer, beverages for Mexico and Hong Kong. When the family business, now named Texas Beverage Packers, Inc., sold in 1997, it had 130 employees and gross sales in excess of 30 million dollars. Over the years, Jodie had served as a Director of Pepsi Cola Bottling Association, was a member of the Texas State Bottlers Assn., the S.A. Chamber of Commerce, and the Manufacturers Assn. While building his business, he continued with his love of sports playing table tennis and basketball. In 1946, he began coaching and sponsoring womenÂs fast pitch softball because ÂIÂve enjoyed the sport and I decided to back the girls because no one else seemed interested. Playing under such names as Pepsi-Cola, Hires Root Beer, Weight Watchers, and Texas Beverages, his teams won eight state tournaments, 24 city championships, 26 metropolitan titles and two U.S. regional tournaments. Jodie traveled not only the state of Texas with his teams, but also to Tampico and Mexico City as well as Oklahoma and Connecticut. As with any obituary, these are the highlights of the life of a man who never met a stranger or a goal not reachable, who lived life and lived it to the fullest on his own terms. He died in his own bed, in his own house with the people who loved him. He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Odelia, brother Jesse McCarley, sister, Jewel Thummel. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Steve Hixon, granddaughter, Jennifer Hixon, and grandson, David Hixon, his guardian angel and dedicated caregiver, Dorothy Carlson and assistant angel and caregiver, Marc Guitguitin, as well as family and friends. The family wishes to thank the staff of Hospice San Antonio for their care. |
