Obituary: .John G. Mavris of Lake Jackson, Texas passed away , 7, 2014. He was born in Beggs, Oklahoma on 3, 1920 to George Mavris and Ada Diles Mavris. He grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma and graduated from Tulsa Central High School. He attended The University of Tulsa until he joined the Army in 1942. He served in the Philippines during the Asiatic Pacific Campaign of WW II. He was honorably discharged in 1946 as a First Lieutenant. John then joined the US Army Reserves and ultimately attained the rank of Full Bull Colonel. He graduated from The Command and General Staff of The US Army in , 1965. He spent many weekends and summer weeks teaching military classes for the Reserves. He received the Meritorious Service Medal when he retired from the Reserves. John married Mildred Smith Bates in 1946 in Independence, Kansas. Mildred was a widow with a young son and daughter. John loved the children as his own and they loved him as the only Father they ever really knew. made their home in Tulsa, Oklahoma until he and Mildred moved to Lake Jackson in 1996 to be near family. John worked for the Southwestern Power Administration for over 30 years until he retired. In addition, he and Mildred owned and operated Mecca Coffee for several of those years. John was a long-time member of the Baptist Church. He served as a Deacon at Memorial Baptist Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma where he cared for the needs of several widows and participated in mission trips. He is a member of First Baptist Church Lake Jackson. John and Mildred enjoyed travelling all over the United States and abroad. visited all 50 states and all continents except Australia. generously took their daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren on many of their travels and literally showed them the world. Since his father emigrated from Greece, his most meaningful trip was to take grandchildren to visit his relatives in Greece. He was preceded in death by his father, George Mavris; mother, Ada Mavris; brother, Nick Mavris; sister, Helen Mavris Katapodis; son, Bernard Bates; and daughter, Billie Bates Cole. He is survived by son-in-law, Marvin Cole of Lake Jackson; Granddaughter, Diana Cole Henderson; Grandson, Steven Cole; Grandson, Michael L. Cole; and Great Grandchildren Rebecca Henderson Seekatz, Rachael Henderson, Caroline Henderson, Michael R. Cole, Jennifer Cole, Sydni Spradling, Ty Spradling, John Cole, Makayla Cole, and Bethany Cole. A celebration of life will be held at First Baptist Church Lake Jackson on , 10, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation is scheduled at the church at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be at Rose Hill in Tulsa, Oklahoma. |

Obituary: Maury Maverick Jr., lawyer, legislator, professor, and journalist, was born on 3, 1921 in San Antonio to Maury Maverick Sr. and Terrell Dobbs Maverick. He died on 28, 2003 in San Antonio. Maverick graduated in 1938 from the Texas Military Institute. He received a bachelor of arts degree in economics from the University of Texas at Austin in Austin. He attended Loyola Law School in Los Angeles and was graduated from St. Marys University in San Antonio in 1949. During World War II, Maverick served in the U.S. Marines, achieving the rank of major. In 1951 he was elected as a Democrat to serve in the Texas House of Representatives and served until 1957. In 1960, he ran unsuccessfully as a Democrat for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Lyndon B. Johnson. On 25, 1966, Maverick married Julia Orynski. During his career as a lawyer, Maverick won important civil rights cases, including two landmark victories before the U.S. Supreme Court. During the Vietnam War, he defended numerous conscientious objectors. In 1991, the American Bar Association gave him the John Minor Wisdom Public Interest and Professional Award for his handling of more than 300 pro bono cases. In 1980, when Maverick was 59, he started a second career as a newspaper columnist for the San Antonio Express-News. In 1997, a compedium of his columns were published as "Texas Iconoclast" by Allan O. Kownslar. He taught political science at St. Marys University and Incarnate Word . In addition, he was a member of the editorial board of The Texas Observer, and was a former co-chair of the national advisory council of the American Civil Liberties Union. Maverick is survived by his wife, Julia, his sister, Terrellita, and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins. Obituary: Ouida Jo Mauzey (Maiden name Crawford) was a beloved mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She went to be with her Lord and Savior on , 29, 2016 at the age of 79. She was surrounded by her loving family and in the comfort of her daughter and son-in-laws home. Ouida was very loving and caring mother her entire life and a faithful, loyal and hard-worker her entire career. a 30-year career in accounting at Rohm and Haas Chemical company, she continued her working career in security and most recently as a Detention Officer at Harris Jail. Visitation and funeral service will be held on , 2, 2016 at Grand View in Pasadena, TX, located at 8501 Spencer Hwy., Pasadena, TX 77505. Visitation will be from 10 AM - 10:30 AM; funeral service from 10:30AM - 11:30AM and reception immediately following. Service will be officiated by Pastor Sam Glass (2nd Baptist Houston) and soloist will be Eva Waters. Ouida was born in Kerens, TX on May 29, 1937 to Buss and Lucy Crawford. She grew up in Pasadena, graduated from Pasadena Sr. High School in 1955 and was very active at the First Assembly of God Church in the area. She met her husband, Frank Mauzey at a church revival and they were married for 16 years. In 1963, Ouidas home was built in Pasadena where she raised her 2 children, Angelique Mauzey Beall and Randale Keith Mauzey. Ouida was a member for 16 years of Faith Assembly of God and then for several years at Richy Street Baptist Church (former church for her mother and two of her sisters), both in the Pasadena area. Ouida had many attributes, including her Christian faith and love for family. She instilled these values into her children and grandchildren and showed genuine kindness to friends and co-workers. She is survived by her daughter, Angelique Mauzey Beall, her son-in-law, John Robert Beall, and her son, Randale Keith Mauzey. Also survived by her grandchildren: Cameron Ryan Mauzey and Conner Reid Mauzey and her step grandchildren: Justin William Beall and Joshua Carlton Beall. Also survived by her sister, Delta English, brother, Billy Crawford; and numerous nieces and nephews. Also survived by her only beloved female grandchild/dog Morkie, Lexi Beall that loved to play in Grannys backyard for hours and snuggled by her side these last few months daily. She is preceded in death by her parents, Buss and Lucy Crawford, brother, Lewis Crawford, and sisters, Jimmie Irene Kimes, Florene Kimes and Bonnie Allen.
