Obituary: Dr. Edwin Vince Matthews, Jr. (76), a lifelong resident of Houston passed away on 19, 2013 at his home following a long illness. Vince was born to Oma Ray Powell and E.V. Matthews on 14, 1937 at Memorial Hospital in downtown Houston. Vince, a natural athlete with an outgoing personality attended Henderson Elementary, Jackson Junior and Austin Senior High Schools in Houston. He had a love of sports but football in particular. In high school, he was the quarterback for the Austin Mustangs and played for the State Football Championship in Abilene. Although they were defeated in the last 57 seconds of the game, Vince was named Most Outstanding Football Player in Texas that year. He was also name MVP Houston Athlete. Vince went on to sign a scholarship with the University of Texas at Austin and played under Coach Darrell Royal. He was also a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity at UT. His passing success in the memorable game between Oklahoma and Texas in 1958 is part of Longhorn football history. Texas won 15-14 and this game remained a fond memory he loved to look back upon. Following his time at the University of Texas, Dr. Matthews attended and graduated from the Texas Dental School in Houston where he was president of Psi Omega. Dr. Matthews proudly served as a captain in the U.S. Army and was based in Killeen, Texas. Dr. Matthews then returned to Houston and opened his dental practice on Gulf Bank Road in North Houston in 1970, where he practiced dentistry and served the community for over 35 years. In 1960, he married Ann Milroy McLeod of Galveston, whom he had met at the University of Texas in Austin. Vince and Ann had four children together - two sons and two daughters. Vince is predeceased in death by his parents, Oma Ray and E.V. Matthews and brother, Larry Matthews. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Shirley Matthews, his stepdaughters, Tamara and Melissa, loving sister Oma Jean Stevenson of Houston; son Edwin Vince (Vic) Matthews, III and wife Cindi of League City; daughter Lea McLeod Matthews of Nashville, TN; son Allan W. Matthews and wife Lori of Galveston; and daughter Dorothea (Dotsy) Matthews Balentine of Galveston. He is also survived by grandchildren Will and Kit Matthews of League City, Kimmy and Marissa Matthews of Galveston, Tiffany Bastow of Houston and Lauren Balentine of Galveston. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews in Houston who will remember his kindness, love of golf and the Texas Longhorns. Donations may be made in his name to The Longhorn Foundation. With Sincere Appreciation The family of Dr. Vince Matthews wishes to extend their most heartfelt thanks to Shirley Long for her loving care of our father and brother. During the last few years, she provided the nursing skills and necessary demands of everyday care which were so important in his life. Obituary: Truett Carson (T.C.) Matthews, age 94, of Baytown, TX died peacefully on the afternoon of 15, 2015. He was born on May 15, 1921, the third child of Carson B. and Jeanne Marie Tynes Matthews. He was raised and educated along with his brother Walter Lauren Matthews and sister Frances Mary Tate Mathews Liptrap in Crystal Springs, Mississippi. Truett moved to Houston, TX in 1941. In 1942 he married his first wife Peggy Jean Cecil Matthews; and they enjoyed 51 years of marriage. Truett and Peggy are survived by one daughter Jean Marie Matthews Heiskell and husband Grover Heiskell, Jr. Truett was Pop to two grandsons, Grover L. Heiskell III Trey and wife Jennifer, and Matthew R. Heiskell and wife Amanda; six great- grandchildren, Sean Matthew, Joe, Maggie, Peter, Caleb Truett, and Elise Heiskell. Truett is survived by his second wife of 21 years, Lois Kyle James Matthews. Her family became his with daughter Barbara and husband Ronnie Anderson, Kathy and husband Dennis McDuffie, and son Steven and wife Donna James; grandchildren Lori Isaacks and husband Jason, Brian Anderson and wife Tiffany, Lisa Thomas and husband Les, Alison Blanchard and husband Kyle, Mary East and husband Justin, Joe Keating and wife Michelle, Tyler James and wife Sabrina, Trey James and wife Mary, and Brook James and fiancé Garrett Becker. Truett had 24 great-grandchildren and he loved his entire family and remained especially close to the children and grandchildren of his brother and sister. Truett is preceded in death by his first wife, Peggy Jean Cecil Matthews; his brother, Walter Lauren Matthews; and his sister, Frances Mary Tate Matthews Liptrap. He went to work for Hughes Tool in 1941, served in the U.S. Army 8th Air Corp Training Division from 1943 to 1945 and returned to Hughes Tool where he retired as a Production Supervisor in 1985. He also retired as a Sky Box supervisor at the Astrodome in 1994 where he was affectionately known as T.C. for Top Cat. He was a member of Blue Masonic Lodges 1153 and 1172 for 68 years and Scottish Rite for 64 years. He accepted Christ as his Savior at eight years old and was a devoted member of The Searchers School Class at Cedar Bayou Grace United Methodist Church. Truett loved gardening, traveling, fishing, hunting, billiards, and playing cards. His motto was Strive to be fair, firm, and consistent with everyone. The family would like to thank caregivers Betty Hatfield and Monica Prado and the entire staff of VITAS In-Patient Hospice. The family will receive friends on , 20, 2015 from 6:00pm to 8;00pm at Earthman Chapel, in Baytown, TX. services will be held on , 21, 2015 at 10:30am at Earthman Chapel. Obituary: Dr. Matthews, a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, practicing in Dallas for over fifty years, passed away on 27, 2010. He grew up in Thomaston, Georgia and graduated from the University of Georgia with a BS degree in Forestry. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as ensign in the US Navy serving in Navel Intelligence in the South Atlantic, then as communications officer aboard the USS Mount McKinley in the South Pacific during World War II. His active duty engagements included Palau, Luzon, Lingayen Gulf, Okinawa and going ashore at Hiroshima following the atomic attack. He retired as Lieutenant Commander. Dr. Matthews graduated from Baylor of Dentistry in 1950 and then served a preceptorship in orthodontics with Dr. Robert Gaylord. He was elected to the Fellowship in the American of Dentists and the International of Orthodontists, was a member of the Charles H. Tweed Foundation, and has served as president of the Southwest Society of Orthodontists and vice president of the American Association of Orthodontists. In 1970 he was elected to Omicron Kappa Upsilon honorary fraternity. He was a member of the Dallas Dental Society and many other professional organizations. In 1961 Dr. Matthews, along with Dr. Gaylord and Dr. Tom Williams, established the orthodontic department at Baylor which has become one of the most prestigious orthodontic programs with alumni practicing worldwide. He was a member of the faculty since its inception until his health forced his retirement in 2008. Baylor established a lecture series in his name, dedicated The Tom Matthews Library in the orthodontic department and gives the Tom Matthews Award each year at the Baylor alumni annual meeting. Since 1949 he was a member of Highland Park United Methodist Church, a charter member of the Two by Two School class, served on the board of the Park Cities YMCA and on many other civic organizations. He loved fishing, hunting, sailing and was a prize winning skeet shooter. He belonged to the Dallas Gun Club, the Dallas Corinthian Yacht Club and Northshore Club. He volunteered for years as a tram driver at the Dallas Arboretum. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Martha Keith Matthews (Martie), daughter Vicki Bejcek and husband John, son Tom Matthews, Jr. and wife Cindy, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cindy Matthews Leitch. A memorial service will be held on , 4 at 2:00 p.m. in Cox Chapel at Highland Park United Methodist Church, 3300 Mockingbird Lane, Dallas, Texas.
