Obituary: Alfred John Marek passed away on 27, 2017 after a two year battle with cancer at the age of 90. Alfred was born on May 8, 1926 in West, Texas, one of the identical elder twins of Joseph and Catherine Marek. Upon high school graduation, he enlisted in the Navy in 1944 where he was assigned to an aircraft carrier in the Pacific. A proud Texas A&M graduate, Alfred earned a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering in 1949. Alfred had a long and successful career in the field of aerospace and electrical engineering with Vought Corporation, assigned to the NASA space program for 32 years. He and his peers were responsible for 112 successful launches of scientific spacecraft into earths orbit from Wallops Island, VA., Vandenberg, CA., and Kenya Africa. He retired as an Engineering Manager after 38 years of service. On 27, 1952 Alfred married his wife of 64 years, Mary Louise Giesen, at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in downtown Dallas. Together they raised three children; Larry, Karen, and Patti. Alfred was a charter member of St. Monica Catholic Church which he attended for about 62 years and volunteered his time there during retirement. Alfred loved life, telling jokes, having fun and socializing. He enjoyed games, sports, playing cards and reading. Being a close family, he especially enjoyed time with his children. He played tennis with Patti, golf and tennis with Larry, and was known to frequent three libraries in a day with Karen. Although an engineer, he was artistic and enjoyed painting with water colors. retiring, he and Mary Louise traveled extensively in the US, Europe and the Caribbean. also spent time taking care of the grandchildren in Houston and Station. Alfred was an inspiration to his children and his grandchildren as all of them have followed in his footsteps and attended his Alma Mater. He was loved and appreciated and will be missed by his family and friends. Alfred is preceded in death by his brother, Benjamin and granddaughter Brittany Blanton. He is survived by his wife, Mary Louise, son Larry and wife Patti, daughter Karen and husband Herb Rohloff, daughter Patti and husband Jeff Blanton, his twin brother Albert and wife Terry, his sister Irene Grieco, sister-in-law Pat Marek, granddaughter Nicole and husband Matt Faldyn, grandson Chad Blanton, granddaughter Heather Blanton and great-granddaughter Ava Faldyn, extended family Nicole, Terry, Ashley, and Austin Gregory, Katelyn Rohloff, Chris Rohloff and wife Maria, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Services include visitation on Wed. May 3 4-8:00pm at Calvary Hill (3235 Lombardy Ln) with a rosary at 6:00 and a Mass in the North Chapel of Calvary Hill on Thur. May 4 10:00am. Obituary: Charles A. Mardiros was born 18, 1928 in Weehawken, New Jersey to Anna and Khoren Mardirosian. He was the youngest sibling of three with his brother, Armen and his sister, Arax. When they were young, his parents fled Armenia to escape the Armenian Genocide. He served his country in the US Navy during World War II in the Pacific Fleet. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geology from Rutgers University in 1952. He earned a Master of Science degree in Geology from the University of Utah in 1964. He was a Mining Geologist. He worked in and around Salt Lake City, Utah for ten years on a variety of mining projects, which included both surface and underground properties, containing metallic or nonmetallic mineral deposits. His careers lead him to travel both within the US and internationally. He later moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where he worked for the New Mexico Bureau of Mines, Socorro, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines. He authored twenty one publications, mostly maps which he created, and they are housed in the Library of Congress. He later resided In Laredo, Texas where he raised a family and taught geology at Laredo Junior . He was also a gemologist and part owner of a jewelry store. His work at Alamo Energy relocated him to San Antonio, Texas in the 1990s. During his retirement he worked as a substitute teacher for Alamo Heights High School. In his free time he enjoyed reading books, listening to classical music, solving crossword puzzles, and writing articles, some of which were published in the San Antonio Express News. He also enjoyed writing research papers about naval battles in the Pacific during World War II. Charles encouraged a love of learning with his daughters, always reminding them to look it up. Charles enjoyed waking up before the sun the morning of a family vacation; taking a drive; having dinner at the table every day. He bought gifts that were educational for his children; loved having his coffee; reading the newspaper; solving a crossword puzzle; reading voraciously, catching up with his friends; and enjoying a sweet treat. Charles served as a Lead Usher at St. Lukes Episcopal Church for over ten years and lead the First group at the church. Those who knew Charles, cared deeply for him and knew him to be an extremely intelligent man with a great sense of humor. He loved and was very proud of his daughters and loved spending time with his grandchildren. Charles returned to the Lord on May 21, 2015. He was preceded in death by his parents, Khoren and Anna V. Mardirosian; brother, Armen Mardirosian and sister, Arax Mardirosian. Charles is survived by his spouse of 30 years, Adriana Pena and their three daughters: Anna C. Mardiros of Austin, TX; Carissa Mardiros Fabián and her husband Rene Fabián of Houston, TX and Lara A. Hernandez and her husband Arturo Hernandez of Austin, TX and three grandchildren, Mariana B. Fabián, Sebastián D. Hernandez, and Noelia S. Fabián. The family would like to express its deep gratitude to the wonderful friends in his life, especially Tim Vaughan, Hans and Catherine Helland, Judy Durbin, and H.C. Tobias. Family and friends joined together to remember Charles at Porter Loring Mortuaries on , May 29, 2015. The funeral services were led by Fr. John Badders of St Lukes Episcopal Church.
