Obituary: John R. Maney, Colonel USAF Ret. died on 12, 2001 at the age of 86. He was a graduate of the University of Iowa and he received his commission in May of 1939, after completing Flight Training at Randolph and Kelly. His long and distinguished career included a tour on Guam during World War II, where he was the Operations Officer for the 19th Bomb Group. As the Operations Officer, Colonel Maney revolutionized the strategy of air war power in the Pacific Theater, when he planned the first low altitude night bombing mission over Japan. The plan included high intensity parachute flares, which allowed the pilots to see and eliminate the target, an aircraft factory in Nagoya. The success of this mission paved the way for the mass low altitude night bombing of Japan from of 1945 until the conclusion of the war. During the war, Colonel Maney flew B-29Âs on eleven combat missions over Japan, including the Nagoya Mission. Other assignments included a three-year tour as an instructor at the Air War ; Deputy Commander for Operations of NATOÂs Southern Command and Deputy Commander of the 314th Air Division in Korea. Colonel Maney concluded his career as the Commander of the Fourth Air Force Reserve Region at Randolph. He was a Command Pilot and his decorations include the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, The Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Medal and the Bronze Star. He is survived by his wife Nadgie, his high school sweetheart whom he married in 1939. Nadgie and John have two sons, Bill and Randy. Bill and his wife, Sharon, have three children, Shell, Will and John. Randy and his wife, Tucker have two children, Alison and Kristin. All will miss him terribly.
