Obituary: Sam Madrid, Jr. was born in San Antonio, Texas on 25, 1925 and died peacefully at home on , 30, 2006 after a long bout with ParkinsonÂs. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents, Isabel Salas and Samuel H. Madrid and brother Ricardo Madrid. Sam was a man of integrity, love, compassion and wit. He always had a kind word to say about everyone and never ran out of jokes. Sam served our country and the San Antonio community with honor and distinction. In 1944, after graduating from Fox Tech High School, he joined the United States Navy and served in the West Coast, South Pacific and in the East Coast. World War II, he attended Texas A&M University under the G.I. Bill and graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in mechanical engineering. He was a strong advocate of education all his life. His philosophy was that education is the foundation to build on and ÂWhen you get where you want to be, extend a helping hand to those coming up. This is exemplified by his own career progression. In 1951, he began a career of excellence at Kelly Air Force Base starting as the first Hispanic design engineer. Four years later he completed a course of study in aeronautical engineering at the Air Force Institute of Technology. Special training and work assignments provided a broad base of experience and in 1946 he became the first Hispanic to attain the grade of GS-14 as Chief of the mechanical branch in the Material Management Division. In 1971, another landmark was established when he was promoted to Aerospace Ground Equipment Division Chief in the Directorate of Maintenance. Again, he was the first Hispanic to rise to the level of management at KAFB. From 1975 to 1988; Sam served four center commanders and six vice commanders as executive assistant, a position of immense responsibility. His stellar performance in senior management positions in engineering maintenance, environmental management and command level earned him many awards including the Air ForceÂs coveted award for exceptional civilian service. SamÂs record of service to the community includes broad-based participation. He served as charter board member of the Economic Opportunity Development Corporation Technology 2001, Chairman of the Bexar Hospital Board of Managers, Senior Executive Service Corps, trustee at Our Lady of the Lake University, chairman of United WayÂs Budget and Admission, board member of the Ella Austin Community , Board member of the City Building Code for Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning, chairman of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, president and chairman of the Board of Trustee of United Way of San Antonio and president of San Antonio Council of Presidents. As a member of the San Antonio Council on Engineering Education, his efforts and support led to a $300, 000 gift to the University of Texas in San Antonio to help establish its engineering program in 1987. He served on the board of Project Uplift, a National Institute for Professional Development, Inc., a program from 1989-1994, motivating and directing thousands of students every year toward career opportunities in science and engineering. This involvement led directly to the establishment for the Sam Madrid Scholarship in Science and Engineering in 1994 at UTSA. SamÂs lifelong achievements and his key involvement in establishing the engineering program at the University of Texas at San Antonio invigorated SamÂs friends to honor him by establishing an endowed scholarship fund to perpetuate the Sam Madrid Scholarship in Science and Engineering at UTSA. Three scholarships per year have been awarded to students. A Catholic, Sam was an active member of Holy Rosary Parish. He is survived by his loving wife, Olga H. Gonzalez Madrid; daughter, Ninette Marie Madrid; son, Samuel James and wife, ElisaGonzalez Madrid; granddaughters, Madison Marie and Maya Madrid; grandson, Eduardo Madrid; sisters, Annie Madrid Salas and Patricia and brother-in-law, Al Garcia from Houston; numerous nieces and nephews and many godchildren. The family wishes to thank the staff at Odyssey , Dr. Burslaff, Nurse Maria Maher, and his caregivers, Linda Salinas and Leticia Alarcon for his excellent medical care. Also, our gratitude to Phil and Maria Welsh who brought weekly communion and especially OdysseyÂs Crisis Staff for their 24 hour loving care. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Sam Madrid, Jr. Scholarship in Science and Engineering, The University of Texas at San Antonio Development Office, 6900 North Loop 1604 West, San Antonio, Texas 78249-0618
