Obituary: Kathryn Elsa Grabein Mack, age 91, passed from this life to begin her new life of everlasting peace on the first day of Spring on , 20, 2011. She was born on 20, 1919 to Edwin and Issa Jasper Grabein in Conroe, Texas. Kathryn attended CISD schools and graduated from David Crockett High School in the class of 1937. She was honored as CHS Alumnae Queen in 1980. She fell in love with Emerence Louis E.L. Mack, married him on 25, 1942, and celebrated 42 years of marriage. Kathryn was retired from C.I.S.D. after giving many years of service. With great pride, Kathryn served four years as a Captain of the Conroe Fire Department, from 1942 to 1946. During this time in history of World War II, so many men had gone to serve in the military, that her father, Fire Chief Edwin Grabein, opened the membership to women. The women worked side by side with the men. The women attended training, drills, all fires, and organized their own racing team which completely outclassed several neighboring fire departments in pumper racing contests. She enjoyed gardening in her yard, producing the most beautiful azaleas and fig trees. She loved spending time with her family and vacationing at Garner State Park on the Frio River. Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Issa Grabein, husband, E.L. Mack, and sister, Doris Coleman and brother in law Harvey L. Coleman. She is survived by her two sons, Edwin and daughter in law Carol, Gary and daughter in law Debbie, three grandsons, Reese, Wesley and wife Allison and Cody, one great grandson, Lincoln Mack.
