Obituary: Maxine Genevieve Kayl was born 2, 1927 in Gregory, SD, the third of five children born to the family of Charles and Frances (Kreber) Kayl. Her parents saw to it that she was baptized into the Catholic faith and instilled in her the discipline of the Christian life. She attended Catholic grade school and Public high school in Gregory where Maxine exhibited the boundless energy and enthusiasm which would be the trademark of her personality throughout life. She was married to Mandis Meyers on 29, 1946 at Gregory and they established themselves in farming north of Burke, SD. The farm was home to the couple and their 10 children for the next 30 years. Both Maxine and her husband were forward looking farmers and were quick to adapt new methods for conservation and crop improvement. established a grade A dairy in the 1960s which required their constant attention. sold the dairy farm and moved to Gregory in 1978 where they built a home and then a ceramics shop for Maxine to teach her craft and pursue her creative talents. Maxine and Mandis decided to spend winters in Arizona so they went to Apache Junction and in 1985 – under Maxines guidance – they established a bed and breakfast which they operated together until Mandis death in 1990. that Maxine continued to operate the bed and breakfast until 2005. For the past 30+ years Maxine has been the constant care giver for her son Jim, showing great patience and compassion to provide a home for him. Her energies would not allow her to be idle. Maxine worked diligently in her gardens raising produce at first because of the need to feed her family and in later years her interest turned to flowers. She was a member of St. Josephs Altar society and always a willing worker to serve at any occasion for the church. For 35 years Maxine taught catechism at Sacred Heart Church, Burke and later St. Josephs Church, Gregory. Through the Catholic Daughters she gained additional spiritual strength which sustained her hectic daily routine. Maxine was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Library Club in Gregory. Both benefited from her many ideas and spirited works. A longtime member of St. Josephs Catholic Church she seldom missed a daily mass or event in which she could contribute. Maxine died peacefully on 14, 2012 in her home in Gregory at the age of 85 years. She was preceded in death by her husband Mandis, her parents, a son Tom, a grandson Robert Ertz, a great-grandson Michael Moon, and a sister Mary Lou Putnam. Grateful for the blessing of sharing her life are her nine children: Jerry (Jeanne) of Jefferson, CO – Judy (Ron) Welbig of Dell Rapids, SD – Mary Martin of Kansas City, MO - Fran (Pat) Brady of Laramie, WY – Terri Riedel of Sioux Falls, SD – Barbara (Rick)Wendland of San Carlos, CA – Madonna Moran of San Ramon, CA –Jim Meyers of Gregory and Rick Meyers of Valley Springs, CA. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren, and by two brothers Charles and Kenneth Kayl, both of Gregory, SD and a sister Evelyn of San Lorenzo, CA , and by many nieces, nephews and other relatives. * * * * * * * * * * * * * services for Maxine Meyers of Gregory were held , 18, 2012 at 10 a.m. at St. Josephs Catholic Church in Gregory with Father Godfrey Muwanga as Celebrant. A wake service was held evening at 7 p.m. at the church. Lector was Judy Welbig and altar servers were Joseph Veskrna and Robert Vomacka. Gift bearers were Amy Moon, Melissa McBride, and children. Eucharistic ministers were Ron Welbig and Terry Riedel. Maxines granddaughters were in charge of registration and flower attendants were the family. Music was provided by Mary Beth Gergen, pianist. Songs were We Walk by Faith, Hail Mary Gentle Woman, Prayer of Saint Francis, How Great Thou Art, and Song of Farewell. Casket bearers were Brian Welbig, Mark Welbig, Doug Ertz, Jeremy Ertz, Michael Moon, and Larry Kayl. Interment was in the Graceland , Burke, SD. |
