Obituary: COLUMBIA - CDR W. Robert Maxwell USNR (RET)

passed away peacefully at his home , 30,

2016.

He was predeceased by his parents, William McKinley Maxwell and Laura Engels Maxwell; his beloved wife of 63 years, Marjorie Saulpaw Maxwell; sister, Janet Gullickson; and grandson, William Robert Maxwell II. He is survived by his son, Thomas McKinley Maxwell (Joan Beckham); daughter, Melissa Schiavone (Andrew); grandchildren, Edward Maxwell, Laura Hilsen (Scott), Drew Schiavone and Chandler Schiavone.

Bob was born 1, 1919 in Dodgeville, Wisconsin, grew up in Wausau, graduated from Wausau High School in 1937 and employed by Employers Mutual of Wausau. He enrolled in the University of Wisconsin in 1938. When the war with Japan broke out, he entered the Navy’s V-5 flight program and was sworn in on 18, 1941. He completed the school year and on 1, 1941 and along with thirty other University of Wisconsin students known as “The Flying Badgers” reported for flight training at Glenview, Illinois. training at Pensacola Naval Air Station, Bob went on the Navy’s Fighter Finishing School at Opa-Locka, Florida and earned his Navy Wings of Gold and Ensign’s commission on May 12th, 1942.

Carrier Qualification at San Diego Naval Air Station, he was assigned to fighter squadron VF-11 flying Grumman Wildcats. Bob arrived at Guadalcanal on 26, 1943. Bob’s combat debut was a strike on the Japanese airdrome at Mundo on New Georgia Island and a search and rescue mission. During this he was involved with a mid-air collision with one of his division planes, forcing him to bail out at 14,000 feet. He spent 3 days at sea in a one-man raft before getting ashore. 8 days he was eventually rescued by friendly natives who took him to the local coast watcher and returned to his unit.

On May 2, Bob was one of sixteen F4F Hellcats from VF-11 to provide cover for a strike force of bomber and torpedo planes to attack the island of Mundo. On 19, Bob shot down a Judy dive-bomber and was credited a Judy probable in defense of Task Force58. Four days later, Bob achieved Ace status when he downed 3 Tony Interceptors in a late afternoon dogfight near Task Force 58. Bob, now a division leader, downed a Japanese Betty twin-engine bomber and an Emily four-engine flying boat while escorting a lifeguard patrol near Tinian.

Later, on 17, 1944 Bob downed a Tony at sea off Luzon for a final tally of seven kills plus one probable. His combat engagements involved Guadalcanal, Marcus and Wake Islands, The Marianas, Palau, Bonin Islands, Luzon, Formosa, Battle of the Philippine Sea, Jima and Iwo Jima.

completing his combat tour with VF-51, he was assigned to the Advance Fighter Training Base at Daytona Beach, Florida as a fighter instructor. It was there that he met his future wife, Marjorie Louise Saulpaw. were married 12, 1945, two days before the war with Japan ended.

the war Bob returned to the University of Wisconsin receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration 18, 1947. In , he was sent to the Atlanta as Branch Claims Manager covering Georgia, Florida and Alabama for Employers Mutual of Wausau. He transferred into sales and was sent to Columbia, SC on 1, 1950.

In 1983, after a long and successful sales career he retired from the Wausau Insurance as one of their top producers, known throughout the insurance industry as “The Wizard of Wausau.”

Bob was a member of the Forest Lake Country Club, Saint Martin’s- in- the- Fields Episcopal Church, The Executive Club, The Columbia Navy League, The American Association of Fighter Aces, The Columbia History Club, The Sertoma Club and Past President of the Columbia Touchdown Club. In 2015, Bob received The Congressional Gold Medal honoring all American Fighter Aces.

Bob enjoyed the annual family vacations at Pawley’s Island and fishing in the creek and off of the pier. He was an avid golfer and member of the Palmer Festival. A loyal Gamecock Fan, Bob attended all home games and was a member of the Gamecock Club for over 65 consecutive years.

A visitation will be held at Dunbar , Devine Street Chapel from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. , 1, 2016. Services will be held , 2, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at Saint Martin’s -in –the- Fields Episcopal Church, 5220 Clemson Avenue, Columbia with interment in the Memorial Gardens after the service. Following internment, the family will receive friends at the residence.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, The National Medal of Honor Museum, or Saint Martin’s- in- the- Fields Episcopal Church.

Obituary: COLUMBIA – Thomas McKinley Maxwell, 70, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on , 16, 2016. Tom was born on 2, 1946, in Madison, Wisconsin. His family moved to South Carolina where he attended A.C. Flora High School in Columbia, followed by the U.S. Naval Academy and the University of South Carolina. An avid golfer, Tom played competitive golf in high school and college and was on the varsity golf team at the U.S. Naval Academy. While the majority of his career was spent in the structural steel industry, he became deeply interested in rocks, gemstones and gemstone faceting later in life. His hobby became his passion and eventually he became an instructor of faceting at the William Holland School of Lapidary in Young Harris Georgia. He was also the President of the United States Faceters Guild as well as the owner of Carolina Custom Gems in partnership with Beckham’s Barn Rock and Gem Shop in Irmo, S.C. He enjoyed vacationing on Myrtle Beach and Pawleys Island, S.C., and doting on his pets.

He is survived by his beloved companion of 16 years, Joan Enlow Beckham; his sister, Melissa Schiavone (Andrew); his former spouse, Lilla Plowden Maxwell; his children, Ellen DeFusco (Bruce), Edward Maxwell, and Laura Hilsen (Scott); his nephew, Drew Schiavone; his niece, Chandler Schiavone; and his grandchildren, Brooke DeFusco, Brittany Hughes, Sean Maxwell, Maxwell Hilsen, Josh Hilsen, and Tommy Hilsen. He was predeceased by his parents, Cmdr. W. Robert Maxwell and Marjorie Saulpaw Maxwell; and his son, William Robert Maxwell II.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on , Oct. 21, at Dunbar , 3926 Devine Street. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on , Oct. 22, at St. Martin's-In-The-Fields Episcopal Church, 5220 Clemson Avenue.
