Obituary: Douglas Lucian Modling - an 88 year-old native of Lato, AL and longtime resident of Mobile passed away , 17, 2014. Mr. Modling, a veteran of the United States Army, served in the Philippines during World War II. Following the war, he attended the University of Alabama on the G.I. Bill earning a degree in accounting. college, he joined the Air Force Reserve from which he retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1977. Mr. Modling had a long career in public service serving as Deputy Administrator and later as Administrator for Mobile . Mr. Modling was instrumental in the establishment of the Emergency Medical Systems in the City of Mobile, Mobile , and the southwest region of Alabama. He was also a longtime active member of Ashland Place United Methodist Church. Above all else he considered his family to be his crowning achievement in life. Mr. Modling was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Ruth Weston Modling. He is survived by his children, Pamela Modling Baker (John E.) and Douglas Lucian Modling, Jr., M.D. (Denise Calderaro); grandchildren, Katherine Baker Hinman (Maj. Dwaien, U.S.A.), John Douglas Baker (Suzy), Olivia Maria Modling, and Douglas Lucian Modling, III; great-grandchildren, John Weston Baker and Dwain Austin Hinman; and a host of other nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. services will be held from the chapel of Radney on Dauphin Street on , 22, 2014, at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 9:30 a.m until the service hour. Obituary: Eleanor Ellie Mockensturm, 85 of Vestavia, passed away on , 17, 2015. Ellie was born in Toledo, Ohio on 16, 1930. She graduated from Waite High School in 1948, and worked as a secretary for Owens-Illinois for seven years. Mrs. Mockensturm attended St. Jerome Catholic Church in Walbridge, Ohio from 1970 until 1984, and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sylvania, Ohio from 1984 until 2004. In 2004, she moved to Birmingham, Alabama and lived at Mt. Royal Towers. While residing there, she received services from Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. Mrs. Mockensturm is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Eugene Bellas and Elizabeth Ann Shmaus; brothers, Joseph Bellas and Richard Bellas; and husband, Joseph V. Mockensturm, to whom she was married for 49 years. She is survived by her children, Gregory Mockensturm (Chris), Jeffrey Mockensturm (Alice), Jane Phillips (Jim) and James Mockensturm (Karen); brothers, Michael Bellas and Nick Bellas; sisters, Joanne Cox, Judy Morris, Jane Lederle and Karen Bellas; grandchildren, Anne Mockensturm, Laura Mockensturm, Matthew Mockensturm, Ryan Phillips and Mitchell Mockensturm, Sarah Olivia Mockensturm, Andrew Mockensturm and Davis Ouriel. Visitation will be from 1:30pm until 2pm at Southern Heritage . A rosary, followed by a prayer service, will begin at 2pm, officiated by Fr. George from Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. Obituary: for William Warren "Jim" Mock, 88, of Decatur will be , 24, 2012, at 7 p.m. at Roselawn Chapel with Pastor Tony Willis officiating. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. at Roselawn . Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Mock, who died , 21, 2012, at Huntsville Hospital, was born 18, 1924, in Dover, Ga., to Willie Samuel Mock and Mary Anna Doyle Mock. Jim served as a radio mechanic in the Army Air Force during World War II, where among his other duties, he played "whatever instrument they needed him to" in the Air Force Band. He received the American Theatre Ribbon World War II Victory Medal. the war, he opened Radio and TV Supply Co. on Bank Street in Decatur which later became Mock Distributing Co. He also owned Radio and TV Supply in Sheffield and Mock Electronics, Inc. in Huntsville, which is still operating as the oldest electronics store in North Alabama. He was appointed Lieutenant Colonel Aide-de Camp in the Alabama State Militia in 1966. He had a lifelong love of flying and taught flight school for several years. He had his instrument license, airline pilots license, and qualified as a jet pilot in his seventies. He loved boating, traveling, playing the piano, and repairing anything that was broken. He never lost his temper and had the patience and knowledge to fix anything from clocks to airplane engines. He will be greatly missed by his wife, family and friends. Jim was a member of Calvary Assembly. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Jeff Mock and Carroll Mock and his first wife, Vivian Timberlake Mock. He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Gemma Mock; two daughters, Gloria (Bill) Oliver and Barbara (Tommy) Compton; one brother, Bobby Mock; two sisters, Doris Hendricks and Bernice Yarbrough; and six grandchildren, Bo (Christy) Oliver, Dee (Brad) Meyer, Meg (Josh) Hamilton, Kelly Compton, Andy Compton and Jessica (Jeff) Keith. Pallbearers will be Gwen Hardin, Andy Compton, Bill Oliver, Bo Oliver, Josh Hamilton and Brad Meyer. Honorary pallbearers will be Norman Epstein, Lee Webster, Bobby Mock, Marcus Johnson, Sammy Pruett, Thomas Perry, Carl Matson and Tommy Compton. |
