Obituary: Live simply, Love generously, deeply, Speak kindly. For many, those words simply represent a motto. But for Lorraine Rosina Martinmaas, it summarized in every way who she was. She was modest, quiet and observant, taking in everything around her and always thinking before acting. She was a realist, someone who was efficient and practical in everything she did. She was a friendly person who truly cared about those around her. Lorraine was born on 14, 1919 at At her Grandmother's home in Ree Heights, South Dakota. She was the daughter of Henry and Mary Kuper. Raised in South Dakota, she was brought up to be tolerant and trustworthy. As a child, she learned to be conscientious, responsible and punctual. These were all traits that she would carry with her throughout her life. As a young girl, Lorraine was always aware of how others around her felt and this quality served her well. With a deep capacity to tolerate the feelings of others, Lorraine was generally able to avoid conflicts. Lorraine also had the ability to relate well with her family and friends. Lorraine was raised with ten siblings. She had three sisters, Viola Martinmaas, Eileen Boehmer and Margaret (deceased) and she had six brothers, Bernard "Bud" (deceased), George (deceased), James (deceased), Leo, Clarence, Jerome and Don. Lorraine was constantly involved in activities with her family. Lorraine and her siblings deeply cared for each other and shared many life experiences over the years. Growing up, Lorraine liked to be outside all the time when she was a child. She played a lot with her sister Viola and her brother George, playing house, and sliding down the barn roof, even though they weren't supposed to. Lorraine only went to school up to the ninth grade. I believe her favorite class was penmanship. Lorraine enjoyed some courses more than others, having favorite subjects and teachers. Most folks would say that Lorraine was shy until they got to know her. Those who were privileged to know her well learned that she was a solid, good friend. Lorraine was reluctant to generalize about people, and she based her friendships on her personal experiences. Because of this, Lorraine best trusted those people that she truly knew. She was concerned about how those around her felt, and she always seemed to uncover the positive side of people. She could relate to others and had the ability to see their point of view, to walk a mile in their shoes, as the saying goes. The friends that she made, Lorraine kept. While growing up, some of her best friends were her cousins, brothers and sisters. Later in life, she became friends with Barbara Abram. Barbara lived next door to Lorraine when she lived in the house on Brooks St. remained the best of friends until the day Lorraine died. Love can be defined but must be experienced. That was so true for Lorraine. She was totally committed to Tony and maintained traditional ideals about marriage. It was as if Lorraine naturally sensed her spouses needs, and accepted those feelings unconditionally. Although Lorraine disliked conflict, she did not take flight from discord, but rather sought to preserve harmony even during the most trying times. Lorraine was a good mother to her children. She had old fashioned parental values and could handle typical family conflicts in a fair and calm manner. Because she trusted emotions, Lorraine was reluctant to force issues and used gentle persuasion to resolve situations. In this way she seemed to radiate an aura of warmth and caring to those around her, always thinking before acting. No matter how hectic life around her might be, she seemed to know and track everyones whereabouts. Lorraine was blessed with eleven children, five daughters, Marlene Gerig, Renee Shewey, Karen Dryden, Pam Stanley and Michelle Buchholz and six sons, Dennis (deceased), David, Allan, Kevin, Craig and Steven. She was also blessed with thirty grandchildren, forty-eight great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren. Lorraine worked a few jobs outside the home. At one time she was a hod carrier in the shipyards. She picked potatoes at another time. She worked in a department store cutting out the employee pictures and attaching them to their ID cards. But for most of her life, she was an outstanding wife and mother. Lorraine's most favorite thing in the world was spending time with her family. She loved having her children, grandchildren et al come over and spend time just sitting and chatting or looking through old pictures and reliving the past. She loved to go on picnics with her family, especially to the Oregon Coast. She loved having extended family come over to visit or going to visit them. An individual who respected and maintained traditional values, her faith was important to Lorraine. Her compassion, consideration and sympathy toward others was evident in her personal beliefs. She was a member of St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church in Salem, Oregon. During that time, she was involved in Catholic Daughters. Lorraine liked to go and visit with her parents and siblings. Whether they were in South Dakota, Salem, Oregon, Prineville, Oregon or Redmond, Oregon, she loved to spend time with her Mom and Dad, brothers and sisters. She did mention to her daughter Marlene that she would have loved to have gone to Germany at some point in her life but she never got there. Lorraine passed away on 19, 2014 at home. She is survived by Marlene, David, Allan, Kevin, Craig, Steve, Renee, Karen, Pam and Michelle. Services were held at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church. Lorraine was laid to rest in St. Barbara's in Salem, Oregon. It is said that some people can see the forest for the trees. Lorraine was able to focus on each individual tree, tending to continued... |
