Obituary: The long and eventful life of a true original, Kelma Eugene (Black) Morley, came to an end on , 29th, 2015. She was the daughter of Oklahoma pioneers and was born on Valentines Day 1925 in Calera, Oklahoma. Her father Willie Edward Black was born in Indian Territory in 1880, and her mother Inez (Brown) Black came with her family from Texas to settle in the territory in 1885. Kelma grew up on the family homestead in Calera, the youngest of seven children. She was proud of her family and where she was raised, and spoke often of her happy childhood. Later in life she would often entertain her family with stories of her youth, including tales of swinging from the neck of a pet mule, learning to drive the old Model T, and recalling numerous adventures and fun times with her brother and sisters. Following her 1943 graduation from Calera High School, Kelma went to join her sisters in St. Louis, Missouri to work in the Emerson Electric plant for the duration of World War II. She was a genuine Rosie the Riveter, and attended reunions and ceremonies honoring these wonderful women well into her 80s. the war, Kelma returned to Oklahoma. She met and married her first husband, Herbert P. H.P. Smith and they eventually settled in Midwest City in 1951. Together she and H.P had two children, Iris and Harvey. When her marriage to H.P. ended, she and her children moved to be with family in Jersey City, New Jersey. It was there that she married John J. Morley, and where their daughter Inez was born. Kelma and her family then moved back to Oklahoma in 1962, again settling in Midwest City. She began working at Tinker Air Force Base in 1966, retiring from the gear box unit in Building 3001 in 1986. She made many life-long friends at Tinker, including her best friend and traveling companion Beulah. Following her retirement she was an active member of the local NARF chapter, and enjoyed their many meetings and activities. Kelma never, ever met a stranger. She was a friendly, fun-loving, and outgoing person who made friends wherever she went. Her personality and spirit of adventure were evident in her love for travel. She was always ready to get up and go, and enjoyed countless trips and vacations, ranging from weekend road trips down home to exotic vacations in Hawaii. She loved Las Vegas, and took immense joy in taking her grandchildren there upon the occasion of their 21st birthdays. One of her most memorable trips was to London with a group of ladies who later became known as the Londoneers. These women became life-long friends, staying connected with summer reunions and annual Christmas parties for many years. Kelma also loved the outdoors. She had a natural green thumb, and grew beautiful flowers, especially peonies, roses, and iris. She and her husband John had a small acreage in Luther, Oklahoma where they spent many weekends working the land, planting vegetable gardens, and enjoying nature. She also spent many weekends with her family at her Arbuckle Lake property, where the games of Uno became legendary. Cooking was also an area where Kelma excelled. She was a terrific old-fashioned cook whose chicken and dumplings or homemade spaghetti and meatballs couldn be beat, and whose Thanksgiving feasts were a longtime family tradition. She hosted every kind of family gathering imaginable, and could always be counted on to provide the tastiest pies or cakes. She made a meatloaf that was so good it was asked to be made as an annual birthday present for her grandson, and every member of the family enjoyed her breakfasts of bacon and eggs cooked in her who-knows-how-old cast iron skillet. Kelma had a love of animals that was unmatched. She had several beloved pet dogs, including Tippy and Wooly Booger, and her favorite pet cat Big Cat. She fed the stray cats and the squirrels, and particularly enjoyed watching the crows and other birds that frequented the backyard birdbath. Her other interests included reading romance novels, watching her soapies and Wheel of Fortune, and listening to country gospel music every morning. Above all else, Kelmas life revolved around her family. She loved her family dearly, and was there for them in good times and bad. She made sure her family stayed connected through holiday dinners, birthday parties, and especially the annual Black-Brown family reunions. Kelma was pre-deceased by her brother and five sisters, she being the last surviving child of Willie and Inez Black. Her husband John died in 1979, and she lost her beloved son Harvey P. Smith in 2012. Members of her family include her daughters Iris May and Inez Dunn, as well as her grandchildren Michael, Jennifer, Amber, Melissa, Kim, and Kerry; 7 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. She also leaves behind her nieces, nephews, and many extended family members and friends. services will begin at 10:00 a.m. , 2nd, 2015 in the chapel of the Bill Eisenhour Northeast . Kelma will be laid to rest next to her husband John in Arlington Memory Gardens in Midwest City. We will miss you Granny\you were one-in-a-million!! Those wishing to leave remembrances of Kelma are encouraged to do so at http://www.eisenhourfuneralhome.com |
