Obituary: Jesse Lewis Mathews, 92, of Montgomery, Alabama passed away , 15, 2015. He was born on 11, 1923 in Wedowee, Alabama. He graduated from Randolph High School then attended Howard until he joined the Navy in preparation for serving during WWII. Upon the wars end and discharge he graduated from the University of Alabama as a recreation major and member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. He began his career in public education in 1948 as a teacher and coach at Baldwin Junior High School in Montgomery, Alabama where he met and married Julianne Ballard. In 1951 they moved to Anniston, Alabama where they started their family and he began his career as Superintendent of Parks and Recreation. He began working as a civilian in the Air Force in Sumter, South Carolina. earning his Masters degree from New York University, he continued to work in recreation and education administration in Warner Robbins, GA, Wiesbaden, Germany, and Montgomery, AL until his retirement in 1988. Community service began early in his life as an Eagle Scout and the Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity. He went on to become president of the Anniston Jaycees and was active in the Alabama, Georgia, Southern District, and European Recreation and Parks Societies. He served on the board of the South Carolina Recreation Society, Civil Service Board of Examiners for Recreation Specialists and Montgomery Youth Services. For years he was active in every facet of the Exchange Club, serving as local, district and state president and director. He was instrumental in forming the Exchange Club for the Prevention of Child Abuse and served as a board member. In 1990 he served as president of the Alabama Council for Parenting and Protecting Children. Awards included Outstanding Civilian Service Award, US Air Force and the Outstanding Exchangite for Montgomery, Alabama and the southeastern district. He earned the Curtis LeMay Trophy for Best Air Force Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Program in Europe. He was an executive fellow in the Armed Forces Recreation Society. His lifelong commitment to service continued as president of the Retired Mens Club, He was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church of Montgomery, member of the Poundstone School Class and sang with the Joy Singers as long as his sight allowed. He is preceded in death by his parents, William Ellis and Nellie Effie Haynes Mathews and his wife, Julianne Ballard Mathews. He is survived by his daughters, Anne Mathews (James) and Carol Standifer (Wayne), his grandchildren Chelsea Standifer Crenshaw (Arthur) and James Standifer. Visitation will be , 17th at Ridouts Valley Chapel wood from 4:30 until 7 pm. There will be a short visitation on , at Benefields in Wedowee, Alabama at noon followed by a graveside service at 1 pm. A memorial service will be held in Montgomery on at 2 pm in the Stakely Chapel of the First Baptist Church of Montgomery. Obituary: Gladys Ryser Mathews, 103, of Grove Hill passed away 18, 2016 at her residence. She was born 24, 1913 to William Peter and Glida Hoven Ryser. A longtime member of Union Methodist Church, she loved her church family and was active in the Women’s Misssionary Society and Women’s Society Christian Service. She was also a member of the Demonstration Club, active with the of Dimes, served as a poll worker in Clarke elections. She was well-known for her cooking skills and hospitality. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marvin C. Mathews and siblings, Charlie Earl Ryser, Joe Ryser, Johnny Ryser, Pete Ryser and Louise Ryser. She is survived by children, M. Gayle (Jean) Mathews; Gerald Braxton Mathews, William Ryser (Sheron) Matthews, all of Grove Hill; grandchildren, Tommy (Debra) Mathews, Courtney M. (Timmy) Windham; great-grandchildren, Mallory M. (Colby) Powell, Thomas Mathews, Brianna Mathews, Lauren Mathews, Blake Bolen; great, great-grandchildren, Emerson Powell, Cole Powell and a host of nieces and nephews. A special Thank You to her caregivers, Jeanetter H. Lawson, Flo M. Heison, Patsy D. Counselman, Arlene Walker and Therese B. Long. She loved each of them, and the family will forever be grateful for the loving care they provided. services will be conducted at 3 p.m. on , 20, 2016 at Lathan in Jackson with the Revs. Forest Weekly and Earl Watson officiating. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Gardens with Lathan directing. Obituary: Charles M. Mathews, age 83, passed away at Bill Nichols V.A. in Alexander City, AL on 10, 2015. Leak Memorial Chapel of Montgomery will conduct his funeral with Dale Watts officiating. The funeral will be held on , 12, AT 12PM with burial following at Darien in Luverne, AL. Mr. Mathews was preceded in death by his parents, James Roy and Mamie Elizabeth Mathews, sisters, Virgie Merrell, Pauline Harris, Carmen Williamson, Laurice Cobb, brothers, Malcolm, Milton, James Roy Jr., and William Mervin Mathews. He was also preceded in death by his son, Eddie Mathews. He is survived by his children, Charles M. Mathews Jr., (Pam), Gail Knef (Rich), Sheryl Jean Mathews, and Beth Mecke (Charles), 11 grandchildren and special neice, Betty Deason. His family expresses sincere gratitude to Angela Knight for her dedicated care of their father and also to the entire staff of Bill Nichols V.A. . Mr. Mathews graduated from Montgomery High School, Ramer, AL. in 1949. He started his career in banking in Montgomery, joined Burroughs Todd and relocated to Rochester, N.Y. He later joined Falconer Baltimore, MD., eventually becoming President of the firm. He returned to Alabama and spent 10 years with ABS, Montgomery. He finished his career with his own company providing assistance to pharmacies to eliminate outdated inventory for 7 years. He was also Captain in the Alabama National Guard during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Mathews pallbearers will be Rich Knef, Dusty Mathews, Zack Mathews, Mickey Mathews, Rob McNamara, Charles Mecke, Stephen Larrimore and Chris Hawk. Visitation will be on the same day from 11:00 - 12:00 p.m. |
