Obituary: Specialist Everett F. Mac McClure PS-49 (1931-2015) Mac was born on 23, 1931. He attended Elder High School, graduating in 1951. Mac enlisted in the United States Navy on 31, 1951. He attended Hospital Corps School and served as a Hospital Apprentice at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Philadelphia. He then served as a Hospitalman for 14 months on the U.S.S. Kula Gulf CEU-108. He was honorably discharged as a Hospitalman 3rd Class on 21, 1955. military service, from 1955 to 1955, Mac worked as a field house attendant at Winton Woods Golf Course. When the course closed for the winter, he worked as a mail handler for Coastal Transportation Service at Liberty and Dalton to 24, 1955. Mac joined the Cincinnati Police Division as a Police Recruit on 9, 1956. On 16, 1956 he was promoted to Patrolman and assigned to District 3 (3201 Warsaw). As was the custom after a year, he was transferred to District 4 (7017 Vine Street). He also served in District 1 and Communications (310 Lincoln Park Drive). On 18, 1972, he was promoted to Specialist and transferred back to District 1 where he served until retirement on 13, 1985. Specialist McClure returned to work 2 weeks later as an Assistant Operator Dispatcher in Communication Section. Two years later, on 26, 1987, he was promoted to Operator Dispatcher. He resigned on 20, 2000, after 48 years of service to his country and community. Specialist McClure suffered for years with diabetes and eventually caused him to reside in the Hildebrand and Rehbilitation . He passed away there on 6, 2015 and 83¾ years of age. He is survived by his wife of 61 years Janet (Denight) McClure. Loving father of Susan (Glenn) Wernke and Rebecca (Dan) Frondorf. Grandfather of Sarah (Josh) Pollack, Kyle Wernke and his great-grandson Oliver Pollack. He was the son of the late Leonard and Mattie (Lawrence) McClure. Dear brother of Jackie (Ed) Day. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Im sorry to report that Beckys dad, Everett Slats McClure, has passed away early morning 4, 2015. He was 83 and suffering from the long term effects of diabetes and more recently, a difficult recovery from amputation surgery. Thank you all for your kind and thoughtful notes, comments, phone calls, visits, and overall support these past several months for Becky and her mom and sister. Slats was a good and decent man, a very typical west side, hard working, family man, devoted to his wife of 61 years, Janet, and his daughters Becky and Susan. He was a Cincinnati cop for over 30 years and after his retirement from that, he continued his service to our community as a 911 dispatcher for several more. He was the long time manager of the night bingo league at the now defunct St. Bonaventure Church in South Fairmount, and also served our country in the United States Navy way back in the day. Slats was a long time resident of Westwood, and was a loving grandfather and great grandfather as well. If I had to use only a single word to describe my father in law, that word would be exemplary. There aren too many more good old fashioned genuine guys like him left anymore. He was hard working, kind, generous, and quietly forceful on the side of goodness. He was also humble - he never sought praise or congratulations for all the goodness he brought into everything he did. He was an animal lover with several grandcats, he played the guitar, and was a Reds and Bengals fan. Please offer your quiet thoughts, well wishes, and , prayers, for Slats and his family at this difficult time. Saying goodbye is never easy. There will be no services. Memorials can be offered in the form of being selfless and caring toward your fellow man. Words from his grandson Kyle: My grandfather was a great man. I don mean that he was a perfect man; perfect men are rarely great, what I mean is that he was a great man. He was great to be around. He was great to talk to. He was great in the way he made you feel. Great in the way he loved his life, and great in the way he faced his final years with Washingtonian stoicism. He was great because if you knew him you loved him, and if you didn know him you missed out on something… well… something great. There will be no service to remember my grandfather, so let this be my eulogy. Let this be my way of saying goodbye to the man that some called Everett, his friends called Slats, and whom I called Paps. My earliest memory of Everett McClure must come from when I was around three years old. I didn know who he was (or who my Grandmother Janet was), living ten hours away made it difficult to see them, and to me they were strangers. But Paps put me right at ease. He took me somewhere; a toy store, a comic book store, someplace that in later years I would learn to associate with him. Im sure he bought me something, but I don remember what it was. His greatest gift to me that day was a memory, and the beginning of what I now realize was a special bond that would cover each of my 26 years like a blanket. We had many adventures after that day. I say adventures because even the most mundane thing could be a journey as a grandkid of Slats and Janet.
