Obituary: Howard Shields Muse of Southern Pines passed away on , 19th at the First Hospice in Pinehurst NC. Mr. Muse, 73, succumbed to complications from cancer. Born in New York City, he has lived in North Carolina for fifty years. He was the son of the late Howard and Helen Singleton Muse of Southern Pines. A celebration of his life will be held on , 9 at the Carolina Hotel from 2 to 5. The family invites those who knew Howard to join them at that time. Mr. Muse was a graduate of the University of Virginia and had a Master’s degree in history from the University of Georgia. He completed all course work for a doctorate in American history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Working as a tree farmer, he planted many acres in pines and rejoiced in their growth. Howard Muse avocations included the study of Moore history as well of sustainable forestry practices in the Sandhills. He was continually doing work and research in these areas. Over the years he wrote some award winning articles for local publications. He is survived by his sister, Virginia Muse Fleischman and her husband, Edward, of Washington, DC. He was a devoted uncle to Emily Elizabeth Muse of Alameda, California and her children, Zayden Allen Muse and Sukhi Skye Muse; and Matthew Edward Fleischman of Winchester, Virginia and his daughter, Rachel Elizabeth Fleischman. Obituary: HILDA CLAYTER MUSE Hilda Clayter Muse age 80 of Riegelwood, NC passed away on , 13, 2015 at New Hanover Regional Medical . She was born in Columbus on May 6, 1935 the daughter of the late, Irvin Clayter and Retha Suggs Clayter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Muse; three brothers, Billy Clayter, Elwood Clayter and Horton Clayter, also a nephew, Glenn Marvin. Mrs. Muse was affiliated with Blue Cross and Blue shield Insurance for many years. Surviving are a brother, Sonny Clayter and wife, Linda of Riegelwood, NC; two sisters, Shirley ONeal of Delco and Betty Hagood and husband, Jim also of Delco, NC; a sister-in-law, Sue Clayter of Riegelwood, NC; a brother-in-law, Stanley Muse of Chapel Hill, NC; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 7:00 PM on 16, 2015, with funeral services to follow at 7:00 PM at Coble Ward-Smith Service Chapel 3915 Oleander Drive Wilmington by Reverend Patsy Smith officiating.
