Obituary: Clifton Joseph Midgett, 74 of Sneads Ferry, passed from this life to a far better life in a land with no worry, pain or sorrow. Our Lord took him home , 19th after three long weeks of a painful struggle against a heart attack and its complications. Clifton was the youngest son of Lester and Nora Atwood Midgett and was born on 30, 1939 in Sneads Ferry. He is survived by a sister, Virginia (Ginny) Midgett Richardson, two brothers, Dennis Midgett and Louis Midgett, two nieces, Sherry Midgett Cowperthwaite and Barbara Midgett Brown, two nephews, Freddie Midgett and Michael Midgett and one aunt, Sara Atwood Nester of Mt. Airy. Clifton was a fisherman like his father and grandfather before him. He spent his life shrimping, fishing, clamming and oystering with his brothers and cousins, enjoying the freedom and peace of a life on the water. Clifton also spent some time in the charter fishing business. He studied so hard for the license to be a charter boat captain that he passed the test without failing one question. Clifton kept working the river until 2010 when his diabetes became much worse, almost blinding him. Since then he has lived a quiet life visiting with friends and family, especially his widowed sister Ginny. loved to sit on the front porch listening to the birds and talking about the old days. Clifton was a faithful member of the Sneads Ferry Freewill Baptist Church, where he made many friends who loved him as he loved them. He was always cheerful and had a good sense of humor, enjoyed by everyone, especially his pastor. Clifton loved his family and friends and they loved and appreciated him. He also had a special bond with animals, especially his nieces dog Riley. Clifton and Riley spent many hours on the front porch, communicating in their own way and enjoying each others company. Riley, along with everyone whose lives you touched miss you Clifton. A visitation for Clifton will be held on evening at Johnson of Jacksonville from 5 \ 7 PM. A funeral service will be held at the Sneads Ferry Original Free Will Baptist Church on Fulchers Landing Rd on at 2:00 PM with Crandall Fountain and Gene Ennett officiating. Burial will follow the service at the Yopp Family . The family thanks everyone for their prayers and support during Cliftons three week fight, especially the nurses, doctors, and staff of the Cardiac Unit of New Hanover Memorial, many of whom became personally involved in his struggle. Thank you also to the staff of Lower Cape Fear Hospice & Life where Clifton passed peacefully with loving family by his side.
