Obituary: Francis Xavier McGrail (Major, USA-Retired), died peacefully in his home on 2, 2016 after his eight devoted children had gathered by his side. The sixth of seven children, he was born to Thomas and Mary Shanahan McGrail in Harlem, New York City, on 2, 1922. He grew up in the Bronx. While attending Evander Childs High School during the Great Depression he worked as a bicycle messenger delivering telegrams for Western Union, as a stock boy and shoe salesman for R. H. Macys department store, and as an usher at Radio City Music Hall, where he would relax on the roof between shows with the Radio City Rockettes. He learned that you can live by less than you need and make do with what you have.

Given his devotion to his family, he was motivated to enlist in the 69th Infantry Regiment, 165th N.Y. National Guard when he was just seventeen years old, claiming to be nineteen years old. When that unit was federalized in 1940 he withdrew to complete his high school education and help support his family. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the Army in 1942.

Upon completing OCS in of 1942, he was commissioned and assigned to various units. He was ultimately assigned to the 13th Armored Division at Camp Beale in California. Knowing that the 13th Armored Division was a new unit and would be in training for a long time, and eager to see combat and finish training, he was granted a requested transfer. He was sent to England as a replacement troop on the Nieuw Amsterdam (unescorted) on 2, 1944. arriving in Normandy in 1944, he served as a Combat Liaison Officer with the 2nd Armored Division, 66th Armored Regiment, hand delivering secret orders from higher headquarters to lower headquarters and maintaining liaison between the front and higher headquarters. He and his driver were frequently under fire. crossing a bridge into Paris, they received cheers from the locals who believed they were being liberated. Francis and his driver quickly retreated when told by higher command that the French Armored Division would make an official entrance the next day.

As a tank platoon leader, he had a close and unique view of Europe as they advanced through the countryside. The Germans had superior tanks and the American tanks coming through hedgerows were easy targets, earning the nickname Ronsons, for the way they lit up like a popular American lighter when hit.

trading American toilet paper for Russian cigarettes (not quite the same as American tobacco), Francis got to see the inside of a Russian tank. noticing a gearshift that had to be moved with the aid of a hammer, he could better appreciate the mechanics of the American tanks. At the end of the war, Francis and his 2nd Armored Division were granted the honor of being the first American troops allowed entrance into the city. Francis was responsible for his troop occupation of one block.

He departed Europe on the Liberty Ship Lyman Abbott on 11, 1946 where a recording of Claire de Lune was played each evening of the 16 day journey, which he recalled every time he heard it. Francis was awarded the American Campaign Medal; the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 5 battle stars for Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe; World War II Victory Medal; Distinguished Unit Badge; Belgian Croix de Guerre; Belgian Fourragere; and the French Legion of Honor Medal.

Five months after returning from Europe, on 13, 1946 he married his beloved Joan Helene Hynes and together they had eight children. He valued their education and saw all eight graduate from college. He began his professional career with Riegel Paper (now Rexam) in Manhattan where he developed his love for dry martinis over two martini business lunches. He moved with Riegel to Upper Black Eddy, Pennsylvania, where he was also a volunteer fireman, then across the Delaware River to Milford, New Jersey. In 1969, they made their final transfer to Charlotte, where he remained after his retirement in 1982. That same year he also retired as a Major in the Army Reserves with the New Jersey National Guard. He was a long-time parishioner of St. Gabriel Catholic Church.

In his retirement years he was known to enjoy regular cocktails and an occasional cigar. He liked crossword puzzles and watching any and all sports on TV, but especially the New York Yankees. At 7:00 p.m. on most weeknights he could be found watching Jeopardy, schooling two or sometimes three generations of family members playing along with him. He enjoyed decades of annual summer vacations at Sunset Beach, NC, with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family. will always remember him on the deck, gazing out at the ocean and listening to the music he loved. Those who knew him will also miss his sharp intelligence, quick wit, and wry observations. He was urbane, sarcastic, comical, well-read and could always be counted on to provide meaningful insight into any situation.

He is predeceased by his wife of 35 years, Joan, and is survived by Sheila (Richard Berry) of Charlotte, Larry (Diana) of South Pasadena, CA, Tony (Jenny) of Raleigh, Kathleen Hanrahan (Bill) of Charlotte, Joan Holt of Chapel Hill, Steve (Sandy) of Mooresville, Patricia Bates (Richard) of Eliot, ME, and Ann Hayes (Aaron) of Charlotte, 21 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

There will be a brief prayer service at 6:00 p.m. at Harry and Bryant, 500 Providence Road, Charlotte followed by visitation until 8:00 pm on , 7. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on , 8 at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 3016 Providence Road, Charlotte with Pastor Fr. Frank ORourke, Celebrant. Interment will follow at Evergreen .

Memorials may be made to the continued...

Obituary: OBITUARY FOR GWENDOLYN HOYLE MCGRADY

Gwendolyn "Gwenn" Nettlee Hoyle McGrady (82), of Hickory, NC, went to be with her Lord on 25, 2017, in Charlotte, NC, after a brief illness. Mrs. McGrady was born 27, 1935, in Valdese, NC, and was the oldest daughter of the late John Russell Hoyle and Ruth Taylor Hoyle. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth L. McGrady (87) of Hickory, NC; four siblings and their spouses: Henry Clay Hoyle and his wife Shirley Hoyle, Verna Hoyle Hallman and her husband, Glen Hallman, Joe David Hoyle and his wife, Twyla H. Hoyle, and Jill Hoyle Phillips; her nieces and nephews: Joan Hoyle Tickle and her husband Jack Tickle, Glenda Hallman Bradley, H.C. "Sandy" Hoyle and his wife Lisa Hoyle, Hal S. Hallman, John Russell Hoyle, Samantha Hallman, Amanda Hoyle Burri and her husband, Stuart H. Burri, Adam Christopher Phillips, Allen "Bo" Phillips, and James Russell "Rusty" Hoyle; seventeen grandnieces and grandnephews: Tyler McCoy Mull, Henry Nolan Mull, Catherine Bradley King, Hunter Addison Bradley, Daniel Clay Hoyle, Sarah Beth Hoyle Lail, Taylor Elijah Hallman, Jeremy Glen Hallman, Aaron Reynolds Smith, Trevor Austin Hoyle, Greyson Lane Hoyle, Emma Ruth Burri, Graham Heinrich Burri, Audrey Grace Burri, Annie Taylor Phillips, and Christopher Hoyle; and four great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. She is also survived by her stepchildren: Nancy McGrady Knox (Steve), Patricia McGrady Tomlinson (Dean), and Kendal McGrady Morris (Dennis), and their families.

Mrs. McGrady was a 1953 graduate of Hildebran High School, where she played bass drum in the marching band and was a member of the chorus, often having been a featured soloist. While in high school, she also served as a pianist at Mt. Hebron Baptist Church. These were early illustrations of her lifelong-love of all types and styles of music. She could perform nearly any type of song on the piano, had a beautiful voice, and knew the lyrics to countless songs, especially hymns and songs by Nat King Cole.

graduating high school, she spent the next nearly twenty years living the life of a military spouse. During this time, she lived in New Mexico, Texas, Maine, Sumpter, SC, and Goldsboro, NC, and worked for the United States Air Force Civil Service. In the 1970’s, she returned to Hickory, NC, where she worked at IBM for 20 years in customer service and as a librarian. Her time at IBM made her an early and enthusiastic computer buff. She continued to be active in the digital world even in the last part of her life, regularly keeping in touch with family and friends through social media.

Throughout her life, the best description of Gwenn was that she was of a true “renaissance woman,” having talent and knowledge in many fields and interests that were varied and sophisticated. She was an accomplished artist, who spent decades capturing the faces of her family in portraits, painting landscapes and still lifes, and even teaching art for several years. She loved to garden, grow flowers and plants of all kinds, and always knew the name of even the most random plant. She was a talented seamstress, a crossword puzzle wizard, and an avid reader, with penchant for fantasy novels like Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. She was passionate about history, especially that of her family. She spent decades conducting extremely thorough genealogical research, and annually gifted four generations of family members with a photo-filled calendar of birthdays. She also designed and created unique birthday cards for family and friends, and faithfully arranged family gatherings to celebrate each family member’s birthday. Another love of hers was travel. Through the years, in addition to the many military posts, she traveled around the world. Some favorites were her travel throughout Europe, a trip to the Panama Canal, and a cruise re-launching the Queen Elizabeth II. But, most of all, throughout her entire life, she loved birds and animals of any kind, most especially dogs. She is now with her sweet dog Petey, and a long line of others.

Although she did not have any biological children, she showed a steadfast devotion to all her nieces and nephews as well as their children. Over the years, she attended countless concerts, church events, and school performances, fulfilling the role of grandparent to many. She even housed several of her young relatives on the occasion of difficulties in their lives. As Gwenn’s own mother, Ruth Hoyle, noted in her journal, her other children “had families of their own,” but Gwenn actually “has us all and we love her for the way she gives of herself.”

Gwenn was a member of West Hickory Baptist Church for the last 20 years, where she also sang in the adult choir. She was active in many clubs and organizations such as the Hickory Choral Society, The Kiwanis Club, The Arts Council of Catawba , and assorted groups affiliated with the Democratic Party.

The family of Gwendolyn Hoyle McGrady would like to express our deepest gratitude to Reverend Scott Frady for his willingness to go the extra mile (and more) during Gwenn's illness and passing. He cared for us as though we were his own family and lovingly guided us through our journey. Additionally, we appreciate the dedicated and outstanding medical staff at Carolinas Medical . In particular, we are most grateful to the MICU critical care team of nurses, therapists, social workers and physicians, especially Dr. Scott Crane, Dr. Rebecca Burkhart, and Dr. Stuart Burri. Finally, we extend a very special thank you to our friends at the Hickory Snack Bar.

A memorial service and celebration of Gwenn’s life will be held at 1 p.m., , 2, 2017, at West Hickory Baptist Church, 40 12th St NW, Hickory, NC 28601, with Rev. Scott Frady officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Memorials may be to West Hickory Baptist Church. Catawba and Memorial Park is serving continued...
