Obituary: Burnett Elizabeth (Lib) Walton McConkey died peacefully , 31, 2017, at the age of 96 following an extended infirmity. She will have a simple graveside service at 2pm , 4th in High Point's Floral Garden Memorial Park. She was born in Greensboro, N.C., on 27, 1921, to parents Florence Oldham Walton and John Rufus Walton Sr., both of whom preceded her in death. She also was preceded in death by sister Ruth Stockton, wife of Joseph Stockton, of High Point; sister Nancy Edith Brown, wife of George K. Brown, of Greensboro; brother John Edward "Bud" Walton, husband of Violet Walton, of High Point; brother John Rufus Walton Jr. of High Point; and sister-in-law Jessie "Sis" Cornette, wife of Hulon Cornette, of High Point. Elizabeth McConkey is survived by nephew Michael Cornette and his wife, Linda, of High Point; nephew Chris Cornette, a Baptist minister in Florida; nephew Gregory Brown and his wife Holly of Valdosta, Ga.; and good friend Virginia Hicks of High Point, who served as Mrs. McConkey's power of attorney and saw that she was well-cared for during the last two years of her life. Mrs. McConkey's parents moved to High Point, N.C., where they took her out of school in the sixth grade and put her to work during the Great Depression of the 1930s. She married Otis Lee McConkey on 29, 1942. Otis McConkey served as radio operator in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, seeing action at the Battle of Pelelieu in1944. the war, the couple moved to Washington, D.C., where Mr. McConkey attended television school. then moved to Baltimore, Md., in the early 1950s, where Mr. McConkey worked at WMAR as one of the first television engineers and was responsible for some of the earliest live TV football broadcasts. Mrs. McConkey later found an office job at Baltimore's Loyola . In her mid-forties, Mrs. McConkey obtained her General Education Development diploma and an associates' degree in business from Baltimore Community in Maryland. She returned to High Point following her husband's death in , 1968, and earned a bachelor's degree in education from High Point . She was a teacher at Ferndale Middle School in High Point while earning a master's degree in education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. A full-time business instructor in Guilford Technical Community 's campus in High Point for more than a decade, she retired in 1991. Deeply devoted to her family, Mrs. McConkey provided personal care and paid funeral expenses for her brothers and sister-in-law Violet, all of whom died with cancer. She also was responsible for her sister Ruth following the death of Ruth's husband. She was unable to walk and suffered much pain in her final years but remained a committed Christian who loved and trusted in Jesus. She was a good and caring person who made the world a better place and will be greatly missed by those who loved her. A lifelong member of Green Street Baptist Church in High Point, she asked that contributions in her memory be given to the Salvation Army in lieu of flowers or other remembrances. Obituary: Michael Allen McConathy, 18, of Raleigh died unexpectedly at his home on from complications of juvenile diabetes. Michael was born in Raleigh to Tom and Diane McConathy, who survive him. He graduated in 2015 from Corinth-Holders High School. Michael was an avid gamer and a fan of adventure and Sci-Fi movies. He was intelligent, and handy around the house. He also had a great sense of humor, was very tender hearted, and loved to bake and cook. He will be greatly missed by his family. In addition to his parents Tom and Diane, he is survived by his beloved sister, Lindsay McConathy; his maternal grandfather, Robert Butt; his maternal grandmother, Margie Mayhew; his paternal grandfather, Sam McConathy; and extended family members. Obituary: William Archer McCombs William (Bill) McCombs, born 23, 1919 in Steubenville, Ohio to Roy E. and Mary McCombs, passed away in the early morning hours of Palm , 29, 2015. At the time of his death, Mr. McCombs was residing in Pineville, North Carolina. Bills childhood was spent in Ohio, where he graduated from Steubenville High School. In 1940 he enlisted in the US Navy and was sent into action in the Pacific. On 7, 1941, Seaman McCombs was on board the USS West Virginia when the bombing of Pearl Harbor began. Several days later his family received a telegram from the Navy stating that he was lost and presumed dead. That week this very newspaper carried an obituary captioned Sailor \ Steubenvilles First Son to Die in War. Tears of sadness soon changed to joy when, on Christmas Eve 1941, the family received another telegram stating that Bill had been found and was alive! leaving the Navy Bill began working in the steel industry. He moved to California where he worked for, and retired from, Kaiser Steel. In his retirement years he returned home to Steubenville. He was an active ballroom dancer and loved playing cards with his friends from Wintersville United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by two brothers, Richard and Raymond McCombs; his twin sister, Martha McCombs Buono; his wife of 30 years, Dorothy McConnell; and a stepson, Geary Bullock. Two siblings remain in the local area; an older sister, Margaret McCombs Bigler and a younger brother Donald McCombs. The family also includes several nieces and nephews. For the last 25 years the love of Bills life has been Eloise (Bullock) McCombs. She remains at their residence in North Carolina. Bill became an instant family man upon joining the Bullock clan. Survivors include, Kenneth Bullock and his wife Susan of Charlotte, NC; Bonnie Elias Bullock of Follansbee, WV; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren (with two more on the way!). Bill was loved by many. He was such a kind and witty fellow \ and always the consummate gentleman. He has gone to be with his Maker and will be sorely missed. A private family service and burial will be held at Fort Steuben Estates at a later date. |

Obituary: William Morrison McCombs, III, 74, passed away 28, 2014 at Riverpoint Crest in New Bern, NC. He was born 26, 1940 in South Weymouth, Massachusetts and was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church from 2001 to 2014. He was a graduate of Thayer Academy in Braintree, Massachusetts in 1960. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from the University of Maine in Orono, Maine in 1965. He was a Captain in the U.S. Army from 1965-1976 and served on active duty from May 1, 1966 to 30, 1968. He received the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. He served on the Board of Directors for the Craven Partners in Education from 1988 to 1991, was a member of the Craven Crime Stoppers from 1991 to 1992, was a member of the Ionic Lodge #583 from 1974 to 2014 serving as a Past Master in 1998 in Cove City and was a member of the Scottish Rite Masons and a member of the Sudan Temple. He was employed as the shipping manager, special projects manager, order processing supervisor, and receiving supervisor with Johnson & Johnson in New Jersey from 1968 to 1973, was president and general manager at the L. R. Sermons General Merchandise from 1973 to 2010 in Fort Barnwell, NC and was the general manager at Fort Furniture from 1973 to 2005 at Fort Barnwell, NC. He married Leslie Dawn Sermons on 7, 1969. He is preceded in death by his parents William M. McCombs, II and Elizabeth Turnbull McCombs. He is survived by his wife Leslie McCombs of New Bern, his brother James Randolph McCombs of Florida and his sister Elizabeth Matinzi of Massachusetts. A memorial service will be held , 5, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Cotten Chapel. Burial will follow in Westview in Kinston, NC. The family will receive friends following the service |
