Obituary: Mrs. Mary Ruth Tomlinson Marler, 94 of Winston-Salem passed away on , 27, 2014 at Brighton Garden Assisted Living. She was born 2, 1920 to the late Walter C. Tomlinson and Melissa R. Tomlinson; she grew up in East Bend and graduated from East Bend High School. She later attended Hinshaw Beauty School and began her cosmetology career at Vogue Beauty Salon. She married the love of her life, Norman Marler on 4, 1942 and after the birth of their daughter, Kathryn, Mary Ruth retired from her job, taking on motherhood as her new full-time role and crowning achievement. As a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she committed her life to God and her family, offering unwavering support, love, compassion and grace to every person and every situation that crossed her path. Her patience, gentle spirit, laughter and contagious smile are the hallmarks of her character and the legacy she leaves with friends and family. As a long-time member of First Baptist Church in Winston-Salem for over 60 years, Mary Ruth served as nursery worker and School teacher and was actively involved with the Enablers School class. She was a part of an intercessory prayer group, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and Crisis Control. Her passion was meditating on the Word, memorizing scripture which included several Psalms. She enjoyed baking, sewing, knitting, working in her yard and adding her beautifying touches to all that surrounded her. Mary Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Norman Marler and her sisters Mattie White Tomlinson, Bertha Mae Poindexter and Helen Snow. She is survived by her daughter, Kathryn Farrimond and husband, Denny of Winston-Salem; her brother Walter Tomlinson and wife, Carol of Belmont; her grandchildren, Grant Farrimond, Todd Farrimond and wife, Lisa, Matthew Farrimond and wife, Lucy, Nichole Farrimond; her great-grandchild, Garrett Farrimond as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 am , 3rd at First Baptist Church (Winston-Salem) with Dr. David Hughes officiating. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative at 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 On behalf of the family, we would like to thank the staff of Brighton Gardens Assisted Living for the tender care they provided Mary Ruth during her residence there and a special appreciation to Teddys Angels whom she loved. Obituary: Mr. Marler, age 91, passed away , 19, 2014 in Charlotte, N.C. Bud, as everyone called him, was born in Winston-Salem, N.C. to Mr. and Mrs. Grady Gilmer Marler. He served in the Army Air Corps in Europe during WWII. Bud was a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill and the Asheville School of Law, where he and his late wife, Alice Bunny Marler began their family before moving to Greensboro, N.C. Bud represented West Publishing in North Carolina and in New Orleans, LA for 30 years with a distinguished career. Bud was an avid outdoorsman. In his retirement, he immersed himself in fly fishing and conservation, and became a southeastern regional director for the Fly Fishing Federation, as well as President of the Nathaniel Green chapter of Trout Unlimited. Mr. Marler is survived by his son, Charles Lee Marler, Jr. and Michael Miner of Palm Springs, California, and his son, Stephen G. Marler and his wife Meg and their son Gray of Charlotte, N.C.; his daughter-in-law, Patricia Berry Marler and her children, Christopher Marler of New Orleans, LA and Ann Marler and her husband, Dave Wilhoit of Baltimore, MD. Mr. Marler was predeceased by his son, Christopher Gregg Marler. A memorial service will be held at Aldersgate United Methodist Retirement Community Fellowship Hall, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, N.C., on , 28th at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the North Carolina Wildlife Federation, 2155 McClintock Rd., Charlotte, NC 28205; Aldersgate United Methodist Retirement Community, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, N.C. 28215; or to the charity of your choice. |
