Obituary: On , 17, 2016, Seth Craven Macon, 96, of Friends West peacefully departed this life surrounded by his devoted family. He was preceded in death by Hazel Monsees Macon, his loving and supportive wife of 72 years.

Seth enjoyed an active, productive and involved life which included remarkable health for all but his final few years. His oft repeated mantra was, You can believe how fortunate Ive been.

Along with his six siblings, Seth grew up on a farm in rural Randolph . His Quaker parents, O.T. and Kate Macon, strongly encouraged all of their children to pursue higher education and with that support Seth enrolled in Guilford in 1937. There he flourished, met his future bride, and in 1940, graduated with a degree in Economics.

Following graduation he took a job with Jefferson Standard Life Insurance but his new career was soon interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. He served in the Army Air Corps Training Command throughout the war. He returned to his job with Jefferson Standard in 1946 and remained with that company for 44 years. In 1970 he was named Senior Vice President - Agency with responsibilities for all of Jefferson Standards field operations. He was a member of Jefferson Standards Board of Directors as well as the Board of Directors of the Jefferson Pilot Corporation.

Seths insurance career extended far beyond his company responsibilities and included an extensive list of life insurance

industry activities and awards. Perhaps chief among them was his Chairmanship of the Life Insurance Marketing and Research Association (LIMRA), an organization of major insurance companies in the US and Canada. And along the way he authored two books on agent recruiting published by R&R Newkirk.
Seths activities outside of his business career centered around his church and his alma mater. He and Hazel were 70 year members of First Baptist Church, Greensboro. As with all of his life endeavors, Seth immersed himself thoroughly into his churchs activities and broader Christian outreach. He served three terms as Chairman of Deacons and assumed key roles on a variety of church committees. He was a Trustee of the Baptist Retirement s of North Carolina and the Southern Baptist Seminary Foundation of Louisville.

Seths contributions to Guilford included not only significant monetary support but direct involvement in the schools affairs. He served for seven years as Guilfords Chairman of the Board of Trustees and was named Trustee Emeritus following that service. He was heavily involved in many successful fund raising efforts over many years. He and Hazel maintained close and lifelong friendships with many of their Guilford classmates and were fixtures at nearly all of Guilfords events and alumni activities for as long as they were able to attend.

Seth was a master networker and always attributed much of his lifes success to genuine business and personal relationships he developed over the years. He was also blessed with another skill. Without pretense or insincerity, he had the rare ability to walk into a crowded room and by functions end, make everyone present feel like they were the most important person there. All left feeling as though they were an integral part of the team or effort or cause. It was leadership personified. As a footnote, however, many of these techniques were ineffective with Hazel and his children and he was frequently forced to retreat to a cat-herder approach at home.

Seths other interests were many and varied. He prized his large collection of Native American arrowheads found during his youth in the fields of his familys farm while plowing behind a team of mules. He loved offshore fishing and once was in a group that caught and released six sailfish in a single day. He and Hazel enjoyed world travel as long as their health permitted. Seth also enjoyed tracing his family roots. This interest ultimately inspired him to author a book entitled Uphill Both Ways. But perhaps his greatest joy was his farm in rural Stokes . There he raised cattle and relished the hard work that it required.
Finally, and most importantly, Seth was a strong Christian role model for his family in everything that he did and said.

Seth is survived by his children Carol Sleeper (Alan) of St. Michaels, MD, his son Randall Macon (Debbie) of Greensboro, grandchildren Heather Sheppard (Christian) of Baltimore, Carrie Lindley (Mark) of Greensboro, Seth R Macon of Greensboro, and great grandchildren Ryan Lindley, age 6, of Greensboro and Lucian Candelario, age 4 months, of Baltimore. He is also survived by his sisters, Mary Lee Goodridge of Fredericksburg, VA and Blanche Morgan of Greensboro.

On behalf of Hazel and Seth, the family wishes to thank all of the staff at Friends s West for the many years of care and support they received during their final years.

A private family burial will be followed by a memorial service open to all at First Baptist Church, Greensboro on , 22 at 2:00 PM. Family will greet guests following the service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church, 1000 W. Friendly Ave., Greensboro, NC 27401 or to the proposed Welcome Project at Guilford , 5800 W. Friendly Ave., Greensboro, NC 27410.

Obituary: Hazel Monsees Macon, 94, passed into the open arms of her Lord and Savior on , 22, 2015 at Friends West.

While Hazel grew up in a modest rural setting in Southmont, North Carolina, she quickly showed great promise. As co-valedictorian of her high school class, the school's principal urged Hazels family to send her to college. His help was instrumental in securing the loans needed to get her into Guilford in 1937. There, she excelled. She was an athlete, student government president, and an honor graduate in the class of 1941. She also met her future husband in the process.

With the outbreak of World War II, she became a civilian employee of the US Army Air Corps Training Command in Fort Worth, Texas. It was not coincidental that this was the same post her fiancé, Seth Macon, was assigned to following his induction into the military service. The two were married in 1942 and remained so for nearly 73 years.

As was normal during the post war years, Hazel became a (great) stay-at-home mom and, later, the consummate corporate wife. In the latter role, she was a huge asset to Seths career bringing dignity and grace to every business event she was expected to attend.
While Seths extensive business travel left her with huge household and child rearing duties, she still found time to pursue personal interests. As an accomplished seamstress, she made many of her own clothes and she also created many needlework projects. She was a long-time Red Cross Bloodmobile volunteer, garden club member and avid antique buff. Through her life, she also invested a great deal of her time and resources to Guilford and was constantly involved in alumni activities on that campus. In her personal life, Hazel demonstrated a strong Christian faith in her lifestyle, words, and actions. She and Seth have been loyal members of First Baptist Church for more than 60 years.

Once their children were grown, Hazel and Seth developed a keen interest in world travel. With him at her side, Hazel saw the pyramids of both Egypt and Latin America, the Great Wall of China, the wildlife of the Serengeti and the Galápagos Islands, the ruins of both Machu Picchu and Petra, the bustling streets of Tokyo, and to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary, the sights of Alaska with her entire family in-tow.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, Luther and Elsie Monsees, and her brothers, Vestal and Raymond Monsees.
She is survived by her husband, Seth C. Macon, her daughter Carol Sleeper (Alan) of St. Michaels, Maryland, her son Randy (Debbie) of Greensboro as well as three grandchildren, Heather Sheppard (Christian) of Baltimore, Carrie Lindley (Mark) of Greensboro, and Seth R Macon of Greensboro. She is also survived by her great grandson Ryan Lindley, son to Carrie and Mark.
The extended family will participate in a private graveside service on , 27 at New Garden followed by a 1:00PM memorial service, open to all, in the chapel of First Baptist Church, 1000 West Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, North Carolina 27401. The family will greet friends in the church atrium following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First Baptist Church of Greensboro located at the address above or to the proposed Welcome project at Guilford , 5800 West Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, North Carolina 27410.
