Obituary: Carmel Christine ionni, whose career in journalism spanned more than three decades, died on 21, 2015, at the age of 91. Born Nov. 13, 1923, to Elizabeth Nigro Camise and Michael A. Camise, she was a lifelong resident of Yonkers. She attended the High School of Commerce and Columbia University School of Journalism. She was hired as sports editor of the Herald Statesman, predecessor to the Journal News, when men were being drafted into the armed forces in World War II. She later was assigned as religion editor and wrote a column entitled Spiritual Yonkers. As a columnist and editor, she also wrote a front page column, Yonkers and You, a Help column for consumers, and an A la Carte column, a weekend review of area restaurants. As Lifestyles editor, she interviewed celebrities and novelists. Her favorites were Governor Arnold Schwazenegger, before he entered the political scene and Robert Ludlum, author of the Bourne spy novels. During her career, she received numerous awards including one from the Yonkers Safari to Grossingers for her stories on Hugh Redmond, a Yonkers resident imprisoned in China for alleged spy activity. She also received special recognition for her story on a papal audience with her parents and children at Castel Gandolfo in Italy.
She and her husband of 64 years, Andrew, traveled extensively visiting thirteen countries and into the Republic of China. Her favorite places, she often said, were Rome and Hong Kong.
a transfer from the Yonkers office to Whites Plains, she wrote a weekly travel page. In 1988, she retired from journalism and took on a second career as an caregiver for family members, which included: her mother Elizabeth as she progressed through pancreatic cancer; was followed by her father Michael-blind and eventually succumbing to cancer; then her daughter Karen afflicted with Multiple Sclerosis since 1990, and; finally her husband Andrew, as his mind has been taken slowly by Alzheimers Disease. She gave all of herself to this mission down to the very last beat of her most generous heart. Obituary: Andrew James ionni was the youngest of six first generation Italian-Americans born of immigrant parents Alfredo and Antoinetta (nee De Divitis) ionni. Andrew was born 3, 1925, attended Saunders High School, and enlisted at age eighteen in the United States Navy to serve alongside his older brothers John and Gabriel during WWII. Andrew served in the Pacific theatre of operations as an Aviation Boatswain Mate on the U.S.S. Block Island, an aircraft carrier that carried Marine aviators and aircraft. All of the ionni brothers returned safely and were discharged honorably following the end of WWII. Now Andrew is the last to pass from this first generation Italian-American family. He was pre-deceased by brothers Alfred, Henry, Gabriel and John ionni and sister Vera Kagikis.
Early after WWII Andrew first worked in the grocery and liquor stores owned by his father and older brothers. During this time he met and eventually married the love of his life-nee Carmel Christine Camise in 1951, also a Yonkers resident of the Greatest American Generation. The newlyweds honeymooned in Miami and Havana, Cuba-a trip long on romance, but short on cash. Andrew and Carmel settled in Yonkers and raised a family of three baby boomer children-Mark, Karen and Neil. To support his growing family, Andrew transitioned his work life from store clerk and followed a path on the road, including but not limited to: Westchester Parkway police officer, delivery service for Jacobsons Pharmacy and Ashburton Food Store, school bus driver and proprietor of a local moving company named Makane Delivery Service (name derived from the first two letters of each of his children). His last stop on this long and winding professional road was the U.S. Postal Service, from where he retired in 1991. His travels continued in retirement to include vacations with his wife to Italy, London, Athens, Istanbul, Aruba and Hong Kong. Andrew continued to reside in North Yonkers along with his wife Carmel (deceased Feb 2015) and daughter Karen until he passed 11th, Veterans Day 2015. Andrew is survived by his three children and five grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be at Whalen & Ball on 2-4 & 7-9pm. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in Sacred Heart Church on 21st at 9:30am. Entombment will follow at Mt. Hope .
