Obituary: William Dean McDaniel was born to Gloria Dean Walker-McDaniel and William Adolf McDaniel on 11th, 1955, and went to be with his Lord on his birthday, 11th, 2014, at the age of 59. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his two brothers- Timothy James McDaniel and Gail Allen McDaniel, sister-in-law Jeanelle Anita Morgan-McDaniel and 2 nephews, 3 nieces, their spouses and one great niece.

"Billy" was born in the Kansas City and lived in the area his entire life raised in a home filled with love, God and foster children, totaling 13 children at one point. At the age of 15 his family moved to Tonganoxie KS, where they purchased Camp Joy Haven. Although things were hard during these years, Billy would say that they were some of the best times of his life.

graduating from Tonganoxie High School, Billy worked at Sears Roebuck and in the methods department. Later, while working nights in the family bakery “Fluffee Fresh Donuts”, he earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Information Systems from Park , where he went on to teach computer related classes to students in the Portfolio Program for over 10 years.

His younger brothers can attest to his curiosity, creativity, and just down-right hair brained ideas. As a child he earned his first money by getting his brothers to do somersaults and quickly collecting the change that fell from their pockets. As a youngster he earned the nickname "Billy the Kid", and in the middle of the winter led the neighborhood kids to secretly dump buckets of water down the steepest street, the glaze of ice would close the road for cars, and create an epic hill for sledding.

Billy loved to tinker with science experiments. At 15 he earned the nickname "Billy Tesla"- when he found that by using an oscillating circuit and ignition coil, wired to a car battery, he could make his parent’s freshly-mopped basement floor glow blue with electricity.

Over the years Billy’s creativity, love of electronics, and ability to look at obstacles from another point of view, helped him earn international patents. His enthusiastic “can do” attitude always took him from one big project to another. Once he decided to build a remote controlled helicopter. Never one for beginner projects, he went straight to building (from scratch) the biggest and most advanced, expert-level-helicopter on the market. However, by the time he finished, he was so concerned he might crash the thing he’d worked so hard to build; that he decided the only safe way to ever start the engine was if the aircraft was bolted to the ground.

He was known to Ham Radio Operator's as KB0RZC.

He was a life-long lover of music. As a youth he played the trumpet and violin. As an adult he added the guitar, banjo and Autoharp.

One of defining factors in Billy’s life was his faith. He accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior in School Class led by his School teacher. One day when Billy was 5, he found that his dear cat and her kittens were gone he was distraught. But his mother told him that if he would testify at church that God would bring his cat and kittens back, Billy wasted no time. That evening at church he stood up and testified, and when he got home the cat and her kittens were waiting for Billy by the back door. He always loved to tell that story.

As a young boy, he demonstrated a desire to share the gospel with others- although not always in the most orthodox way. When a neighbor boy called his mom a mean name, Billy, being a proud son, settled it the way little boys do and taught the kid a lesson. But unlike other boys, Billy didn’t leave it at that. He went on to share the plan of salvation and lead the neighbor boy in the sinner’s prayer.

He became an ordained minister in the 1970's and his love for God’s word grew. Billy spent hours studying the Bible, and in the 80’s began ministering on evenings and leading the song services at Glad Tidings Chapel in Kansas City. He continued to serve until his health was too poor to attend.

When given the part as a wise man in the church Christmas play, Billy took it upon himself design a circuit board connected to a timer and battery pack so he could add blinking LED lights to his crown.

Billy was also incredibly invested in the lives of the people around him. He worked to maintained relationships with all those he knew. He loved spending time visiting with those he loved.

As a teenager Billy decided that he and his brothers needed to drive to Hoxie Arkansas to visit the Ring family. Once they’d hit southern Missouri they ran into dense fog and didn’t arrive until 3 in the morning, way too early to wake anyone up. So they decided to sleep in the car, but because of the heat they had no choice but to leave the windows down. It didn’t take long to realize the mosquito population of Arkansas is highest in rice patties of Hoxie, None of us could sleep. So Billy decided to speed up and down the road, roll the windows down to blow the mosquitos out of the cabin. finally gave up and called the Rings, who let them in, but surely weren’t very happy to see guests at 4:00 in the morning.

Billy enjoyed spending time with his brothers and family. Often calling to ask, “what are you doing? Are you getting out tonight?” Going to get an iced tea was really just an excuse to spend time socializing. He’d often suggest visiting somewhere way across town and passing about 10 different Quik Trips before you finally stop. Billy wanted to be around the people that he loved. You always knew that continued...
