Obituary: Joseph Francis Mooney Jr., 87, retired chief engineer of the Yazoo Mississippi Delta Levee District passed away at his home in Ridgeland, Mississippi on 24, 2016. He was born on 6, 1929, in Boston, Massachusetts. He grew up in the Boston area, the oldest of five children of Joseph F. Mooney, Sr. and Margaret Clements Mooney. high school, he joined the Navy in 1944. While stationed at Millington Naval Airbase in Tennessee, he met his future wife, the late Bobbie Spencer Mooney. were married in 1948. a year of farming with her parents in Arkansas, he started college at Memphis State University. His education was interrupted when his Air Force reserve unit was called to active duty in the Korean War. He was based in Okinawa, Japan logging 62 missions as an airman. the war he completed his engineering degree with honors at Mississippi State University. He served as an assistant Chief Engineer of the St. Francis Levee District in Arkansas. He then became the chief engineer of the Mississippi Delta Levee Board in 1964. He held the position until 1991 when he retired and became a consulting engineer. He continued to do consulting engineering into his early 80's. During his professional tenure, he served four separate terms as chairman of the engineering committee of the Lower Mississippi River Flood Control Association. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Mississippi Rivers and Harbors Association, a member the Delta Council, and served as state chairman and district chairman for the Water Resources Congress. He was awarded the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal" by the US Department of the Army. He enjoyed flying, sailing, and gardening. He was an active member of Oakhurst Baptist Church in Clarksdale for many years. He served as a deacon, school teacher, and loved singing in the choir. When he and his wife moved to Ridgeland, Mississippi in 2012 they joined Colonial Heights Baptist Church. Mr. Mooney is survived by his son, Joseph Spencer Mooney and daughter-in-law, Janie, of Brookhaven Mississippi, his daughter Marilyn Mooney Dickerson and son-in-law Jerry, his brother Bill Mooney, sisters Margaret Powers and Editha Murphy, seven grandchildren and four great- grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, parents and his brother, Paul Mooney. The funeral service will be held at 11 AM on 26 at Parkway , 1161 Highland Colony Parkway in Ridgeland. The service will be preceded by a visitation from 10am to 11am. Memorial donations may be made in Joe's name to Catch A Dream at www.catchadream.org. |

Obituary: Donna Conlee Mooney, died , 08, 2015 at New Albany Hospital. She was born to the late Johnnie Mae Simmons Conlee and Slay Hugh Conlee, of Ecru. She graduated from Ecru High School where she was salutatorian, editor of the school paper, and head cheerleader. She attended Itawamba Junior where she was president of the Baptist Student Union, president of Monroe Hall, president of Young Womens Auxiliary, secretary of the Student Education Association, on the Deans List, and selected to the Hall of Fame. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in English at Blue Mountain and received a Masters of Library Science from Ole Miss. In her 36 year career with Pontotoc school system, she organized several fund raisers to provide lockers and air conditioning for the new North Pontotoc Attendance and sponsored the Beta Club for 23 years. As president of North Pontotoc PTO she helped raise funds for covered walkways, furnished the library with 10 computers, workstations, carts, and a CD player through book fairs and beauty revues. She was the first president of the Pontotoc Professional Educators. She organized the twenty year reunion of North Pontotoc School, actively participated in the effort to keep Bible classes in schools when the ACLU filed a lawsuit against the school system, and helped secure Bill Murray and Dr. James Kenneth for countywide fundraisers, to pay the lawyers, and had worked with the Bible committee since 1971, where she served as secretary, treasurer, vice president and president. Donna was also active in civic affairs, helping with fundraising to purchase more Christmas lights for Ecru, coordinating 11 Christmas parades and helping with senior citizens days and Veterans Day programs. As president of the Pilot Club of Ecru she coordinated the 1984 reunion of all classes of Ecru High School, compiling a booklet of composite pictures of all graduating classes along with the history of the school since its beginning in the 1920s. Donna loved her church, Ecru Baptist, where she taught ladies school class for 36 years, sang in the choir, and most recently coordinated Operation Christmas Child, where boxes that contained the word of God, toys, school supplies and clothes that were sent to children in over 70 countries and helped spread the word of God to millions around the world. She was president of the Pontotoc Ridge Dulcimer Club and enjoyed playing in churches and nursing homes. A celebration of life will be held on , 10, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Ecru Baptist Church, with Rev. Glenn Reeder, Rev. Tom Summrall, Rev. Barry Littlefield and Rev. Greg Lassett. Burial will follow in the Ecru . Browning in Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements. She is survived by her husband, Rex Mooney, whom she married on 15, 1968, several nieces and nephews, and many special friends. Pallbearers will be the active Deacons of Ecru Baptist Church. Obituary: Bobbie Spencer Mooney, 87, passed away peacefully on 2, 2015 at Baptist Medical in Jackson, Mississippi. She was born in Greenfield, Arkansas, the daughter of Robert Lee Spencer and Cora Mason Teague Spencer. Bobbie graduated from Harrisburg High School in 1946 and Draughons Business , Memphis, TN in 1947. While working as personal secretary to the purchasing agent for Brys Department Store in Memphis, TN, Bobbie was introduced to a young United States Navy sailor from Boston, MA, Joseph F. Mooney, Jr. were married in the Greenfield Baptist Church on May 23, 1948. Their daughter, Marilyn, was born in Harrisburg, AR in 1949. Their son, Spencer, was born in West Memphis, AR in 1958. Joe was a flood control engineer in West Memphis, AR until 1964. The Mooney family then moved to Clarksdale, MS where Joe served as Chief Engineer for the YMD Levee Board. resided in Clarksdale until , 2012, when they moved to the Orchard in Ridgeland, MS. Bobbie and Joe recently celebrated their 67th Wedding Anniversary there on , May 23, 2015. Bobbie’s life was exemplified by her love of her Savior, her family, and others. She was a loving wife, and was devoted to the Christian upbringing of her children. She derived much joy through service in the church and through a loving ministry to the elderly. Bobbie had many desirable qualities; beauty, tranquility, intelligence, but one in particular stood out: She had a smile and a kind greeting for every one. She also displayed her love by her encouragement and generosity. Bobbie enjoyed craftwork, making hats, ceramics, sewing quilts. Many she made as gifts, but some for sale to supplement the family income during the early years of their marriage. She loved to cook and was quick to share with others. Her rich vegetable soups were a treat and her specialty was the “Mama Spencer Pecan Pie”. Bobbie enjoyed serving her churches, teaching, cooking, ministering, however, health issues increasingly took a toll on her ability to continue. Nevertheless, she continued to have that sweet spirit throughout her life. She was grateful for the prayers and kindnesses of others that the Lord used to encourage her until He called her home. She is survived by her husband, Joseph F. Mooney, Jr.; her two children, Marilyn M. Dickerson (Jerry) and Joseph Spencer Mooney, MD (Janie); her sister, Frances S. Gillis (Melvin); her seven grandchildren; Matthew Mooney (Anna), Mary Grace Fontenot (Jean), Daniel Mooney, Patrick Mooney, John Mooney, J. Samuel Mooney, and Elizabeth Mooney; her four great grandchildren: Connor Mooney, Kathryn Mooney, Cullen Mooney, and Eloise Fontenot; and her many beloved nieces and nephews.
