Obituary: Dr.James Edward Meyers, PhD, age 85 of Warren, died , May 12, 2015 at home in the company of his loved ones. He was born 14, 1929 in Detroit, son of the late Julius and the late Christine (nee: Combs) Meyers. James experienced many shining moments in his life, but none that compared to the radiance of his bride, Roses face on the day they were married. It was a love story that began with a chance meeting at a combined high school dance. Hailing from different schools, the dance was the catalyst that would change their lives forever. In a day where courtships were seemingly brief, James & Rose decided to take a little more time in getting to know each other,…and soon, 4 years had passed. Rose was of Italian descent and from a family that was steeped in its native traditions. She was also one of 7 children. The other 6 married Italians, but Rose stepped out on the wild side when she said I Do to her gorgeous German gentleman, James. Following high school, James took a position with the 3M company where he worked for approximately one year before making the decision to further his education. Little did James know how enthralling and rewarding his experiences would be, the results of which led to him obtaining his coveted Masters Degree in Chemical Engineering. The first job that followed the receipt of that degree entailed James participation in the development of the trigger for the atomic bomb. Just when youd have thought that James was satiated with higher education, off he went again,…this time to obtain his PHD. It was a long, hard trek, but he didn go it alone as much of the typing that was required for his theses was effected by the loving hands of his beloved, Rose. Ahhh,…but back in the day, Rose wasn lucky enough to have the convenience and ease of an electric typewriter. No,…there she was at the kitchen table,…pounding away on one of those old cast iron monsters you can only find at an antique store today. And that was what love did. Obviously, education was an important, nay vital, aspect of James philosophy in life. He preached its benefits and necessity to the entire family,…and they listened. With his children in possession of higher degrees, and his grandchildren already on their way (1 granddaughter with a PHD),…James was certainly proud and honored to have seen his loved ones following his lead. One of the sage mantras he shared quite often states; can take away a lot of things in your life, but they can never take away your education. Of all the career experiences James knew in life, the culmination of his education and his profound resume led him eventually to the public utilities giant, Consumers Energy. Amidst the variety of responsibilities his work entailed, one of the most rewarding and pride-making aspects James managed was the safe operation and equipment updates for Michigans 5 nuclear power plants. 53 years of loyal and dedicated service, James took his retirement,…at the age of 78. Yet,…it wasn all about education. There was some fun James managed to infuse in an otherwise scholarly life. Together with Rose and 8-10 other friends, they were the original wedding crashers. One of these sets of friends were the Ventimiglias who provided the fruit truck that they all crammed themselves into as they headed to the wedding-du-jour. These were memories that James & Rose held dear,…moments that provided the perfect release from the complexities of life. A loving husband, father and grandfather, James life and journey leaves behind a plethora of wonderful and inspiring lessons, the most memorable being his genuine love. He touched a multitude of hearts and souls along the way, each of whom will treasure the blessing he was with each reflection shared. He will be missed immensely and loved eternally. James was the beloved husband of the late Rose. Dear father of Dennis (Jane) Meyers, Christine Meyers, and Susan OBrien. Loving grandfather of Eric Cleve, Thomas (Lauren) Meyers, Lauren (fiance, James Michael) Cleve, Jackie Meyers and Michael OBrien. Great grandfather of John and Charles. Preceded in death by 2 sisters, Margaret and Barbara. Visitation for James will be held , May 14th from 3-9pm, with a 6 pm Rosary Service, at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons , 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 ½ Mile Road) in Warren. He will lie in state on from 9:00 am until time of the Mass at 9:30 am at St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church, 31555 Hoover Road in Warren. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet in Detroit, Michigan.
