Obituary: Joy Louise Marolf, 50, of Williamsburg, passed away on , May 14, 2015 after a five year battle with breast cancer. Joy is the mother of four daughters, Sarah 24, Courtney 20, Lauren 17, Rebecca 15 and the wife of Lin Marolf. Joy was born in St. Ignace, the daughter of Gary and Marlene (Martinson) Olsen. She graduated from Lasalle High School in 1983 and afterwards attended Northern Michigan University. Joy met her future husband Lin while he served in the U.S Coast Guard in St. Ignace. were married on May 26th, 1990 in St. Ignace at the Zion Lutheran Church. Shortly after their marriage, Lin and Joy moved to Traverse City and in 1996 moved to Williamsburg. In 2010 when Joy found she had breast cancer, she began to share her life on social media. Shortly after Joy was diagnosed, Joy received a decorative Mason jar labeled Joy Jar with colored slips of paper with inspirational quotes or scriptures on each. Joy then began the frequent Joy Jar Posts on Facebook as well as sending updates on her battle with cancer. She did this faithfully until this year when she became weaker and had to make many trips to Detroit for treatments at Karmanos Cancer Clinic. Every year after 2010, Joy helped with many Breast Cancer Awareness events and fundraisers: 2011 for the Atrim High Tea for Breast Cancer Prevention; 2012 for the Munson Hospital Mammography Assistance Program; 2013 and 2014 she assisted in giving away Hope Bags with Love (Miche Prima Hope Bags filled with personal items) to the Munson Infusion Clinics. Joy made bracelets for each bag. Joy and some of her daughters were also involved in several fashion shows featuring Miche Hope Bags. Joy and the girls also participated one year in the Elk Rapids Harbor Days Parade, walking the entire way wearing their pink shirts and proudly displaying Miche Hope Bags! Joy participated in many yearly cancer events/walks throughout the community and involved her daughters and husband as well. Joy often wore breast cancer shirts that stated Fight Like A Girl! and fight she did! Her strength, grace and indomitable spirit were superhuman. Joy believed deeply in prayer and prayer was her partner in this battle. Through it all, she encouraged others, attended all the school activities she could, continued to work until her health required retirement, kept up her home, supported Lin and her daughters and kept fighting! Her pink boxing gloves are off now; she is worshipping her Savior and God; she is with her Dad and other loved ones in heaven; the battle has been won! Her family prays that all that knew her will find comfort in the memory and legacy of such a remarkable friend, sister, wife, and mother. Joy is survived by her husband, Lin Marolf; daughters, Sarah, Courtney, Lauren, and Rebecca Marolf; mother, Marlene Olsen; brothers, John (Connie), Brian (Trudy), and Mark (Colleen) Olsen, many nieces and nephews, and her favorite Siberian huskies, Portis and Cocoa. Joys father, Gary Olsen, preceded her in death. Feel free to wear pink to her memorial service on , May 20, 2015 at 1 p.m. at New Hope Community Church in Williamsburg, with visitation starting at noon.
