Obituary: Donna Marinkov, age 60 of Warren, died , 26, 2015 at the Kambly Living in Battle Creek, Michigan. She was born 10, 1954 in Detroit, daughter of Mamie (nee: Vezelich) and the late Dan Marinkov. From birth, Donna was a special needs child who was challenged by many obstacles that life would throw her way. But as she met each hurdle and grew in age, there was one obvious aspect that always grabbed her attention,…and that was her love of ling. She adored jewelry and owned many unique pieces that were worn as if she were Queen for a day. It didn matter that most of it was costume jewelry,…she simply found great enjoyment in the beauty it beheld. Obituary: MARY JOANNE (POHLMANN) MARINI Mary Joanne (Pohlmann) Marini, 90, died peacefully in her sleep 7, 2016, in Grosse Pointe, MI. She was born 3, 1925, to Edward and Mabel Serena (Olson) Pohlman in Eagle Grove, IA. Before the birth of his children, Edward added an to his family name to facilitate mail delivery, but after the daughters left home, he and his son returned to the original spelling. As a child growing up during the depression, Mary Jo once lived above City Hall falling asleep with an early Lawrence Welk band playing for a dance on the floor below. Mary had a little lamb . . . who followed her to school was a true experience. The sheared wool income provided her winter coat. She was 8th grade class president at the former Eastside Elementary. In her teen years she was involved in many school and Lutheran Church activities and was employed as a grocery clerk when bread was 5 cents a loaf. She graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1943. As an Army Cadet Nurse, graduating from Lutheran Deaconess Hospital School of in 1946, she met Charles Marini, Jr. of Alliance, Ohio, a Navy mechanical engineering student in Chicago during WWII and they were married 16, 1946. During their 53 years of marriage until Chucks death in 1998, they resided in Chicago and East St. Louis, IL; Alliance and Norwalk, OH; Hammond, Indianapolis, and Mooresville, IN; Utica(now Shelby Twp.), Warren and r, MI; Youngwood(New Stanton), PA; and Lake Wales, FL. Many of these communities benefited from her leadership positions as a volunteer in church and school groups, youth organizations (especially 4-H), various civic clubs and other community activities. She was an avid reader with a thirst for knowledge especially in the health field; a crossword puzzle aficionado; a patron of the arts; a good cook, scratch baker, and canner of peaches, tomatoes, jams, bread and butter pickles, and children-picked cherries from backyard trees for making pies, cobblers, and crisps. Also passed along were family heritage recipes of Kringla, a Norwegian cookie; German sweet-sour potato salad, Italian homemade pizza (long before it became a staple in the American diet), and her husbands favorite Coconut Cream Pie. She had a passion for ew adventures and traveled extensively (alone or with family or friends) coast-to-coast and North and South, mostly by car or camper with opportunities to take in the scenery, parks, architecture, historical and cultural sights, museums, presidential libraries and other points of interest. On occasion, she also traveled by plane, helicopter, or hot air balloon (for her 80th birthday) and enjoyed Caribbean, Alaskan, and Hawaiian cruises. However, her most treasured role was that of mother of 6, grandmother of 9, and great-grandmother of 21. Survivors are daughters: Kathleen (Gerald) Doyle, Mooresville, IN; Mary (Thomas) Chapman, Grosse Pointe Farms, MI; Margaret (Richard) Cunningham, Washington, MI; and Karen (Scott) Henze, Lake Worth, FL; and sons: John (Jackie) Marini, Warren, MI; and David (Cynthia) Marini, Muncie, IN. Grandchildren: Brian(Donna)Doyle, Jennifer(Gary) Colasessano, Kevin (Jennifer) Doyle, Michael (Stephanie)Doyle, Glenn (Emily) Marini, Brent (Kristin) Marini, Christopher (Melissa) Chapman, Ann (Drew) Jones, and Brianna Cunningham. Great-grandchildren: Blase, Cecilia, Xavier, Finnian, Gemma, Juliana and Kateri Doyle; Remington and Garin Colasessano; Tidus and Kaylin Doyle; Olivia Doyle; Caroline and Lucia Marini; Landon, Cora and Claire Marini; Laura and William Chapman; and Sofia and Drew Michael Jones. Obituary: Francis Acevedo Marinez East Lansing Panchita age 85 of East Lansing, MI passed away , 28, 2011. She was born in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico on 24, 1925 and raised in Crystal City, Texas. She married her childhood sweetheart, Efrain Marinez in 1944. Upon moving to Michigan in 1956 she was one of the founding families of the Cristo Rey Parish. She was a Catholic mother of 12 and devoted homemaker, if you walked in her house you were fed and given a haircut. She embodied the role of matriarch who supported her husband in the Comite Patriotico (Mexican Patriotic Committee). Always with a ready smile she was a lover of music, old movies and a hopeless romantic. She had great faith in God, the Virgin and humanity. She was preceded in death by her husband, Efrain Portillo Marinez in 2010 and son Efrain Marinez in 1949. Obituary: Pop, age 87, died 4, 2010. Born in Mexico, and raised in Crystal City, Texas by his father and two other brothers. He married his childhood sweetheart, Frances, in 1944 in Crystal City. In 1939 he settled in Michigan, working and managing area farms. He was an active member of the Lansing Farm Workers Committee and participated in marches alongside his friend Cesar Chavez in support of farm laborers. He managed farms in Texas with his father and brothers and worked at the Morrill Farm in Bath, MI. As patriarch of one of the first Mexican-American families in the Lansing area, he was a founding member of Cristo Rey Parish, the Comite Patriotico (Mexican Patriotic Committee) and active in the Cursillos movement. He had a lifelong commitment to and provided leadership for social justice, receiving several awards supporting that effort including a proclamation by Governor William Milliken. He retired from Lindell Drop Forge in 1966. He strived for diversity and inclusion, and instilled that inspiration in his children and grandchildren. He was a role model for so many, an incredible father, a man of the Earth, a man of faith and so much more. He was preceded in death by his parents, Juan and Juanita (Portillo) Marinez, brothers, Ladislado P. Marinez and Felix Campos, sister, Frances Campos and son, Efrain. Surviving are his wife, Francisca; children, Juan (Diana), Rafael, Salome (Dora), Lupe (Tom) Izzo, Rodrigo, Rodolfo (Beth), Marina (Carl) Szypula, Rebecca (Tom) Pulick, Guillermo (Lauren), Roberto (Mary) and Ana (Frank) ODonnell; 27 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; brother, Teodoro (Blanca) Marinez. The Mass will be celebrated , 8, 10:30 AM at Cristo Rey Catholic Church, 201 W. Miller, Lansing. The family will receive friends at Cristo Rey Catholic Church, from 2-4 & 6-8 PM with a Rosary at 7:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Cristo Rey Building Fund, 201 W. Miller, Lansing, MI 48910 or American Cancer Society, Coaches vs Cancer, 3100 West Road, Bldg 2, Suite 3, East Lansing, MI 48823 in memory of Mr. Marinez. under the direction of Gorsline Runciman s, Lansing, MI. |
