Obituary: EASTON--Rita Muscato, while participating one day in a public protest for a cause in which she strongly believed, was bumped by a woman protesting for the opposition. Rita Muscato promptly bumped the woman back. That was Rita Muscato – passionate, spirited, feisty, and giving – and not beholden to standing on ceremony. Rita Jane (Creighton) Muscato, surrounded by loved ones, passed away peacefully on morning, 22, at Copley at Stoughton following a short period of declining health. She was 86. Rita was the wife of the late Valentine (Val) P. Muscato. She was the daughter of the late George and Veronica Creighton, and younger sibling of a brother, the late George Creighton, and sister, Natalie Creighton. Rita Muscato lived in Easton for more than 50 years, before moving in 2010 to Evanston, IL to be near her daughter, Suzanne (Suzy). In the summer of 2013 she moved back to the local area, living for a short time at the Arbors in Stoughton before moving to Copley. Rita Muscato, a devoutly religious and strong willed woman, considered it her mission to do Gods work on earth. My mother was a super mother, and a great wife to my father, and generous citizen said her daughter Suzy. Hers was not a life lived on a big public stage, but it was one of consistent caring and giving to one person after another, and it was also a life in which she expanded her horizons through participation in a variety of activities and groups and hobbies and recreation. Rita Creighton was born at home in Maynard, MA on 2, 1928. Her father, who left school in 6th grade to help support his family, was a founder and president of Maynard Bank & Trust, and also served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Her mother was an elementary school teacher. While a student at Maynard High School, she attended a Maynard versus Concord High School football game. People yelled from the stands and cheered the Concord halfback, Valentine P. Muzzy Muscato. Her friends suggested that she should meet this Muzzy. She did meet him, and the two started to date. graduating from Maynard High School in 1946, she took a job as a telephone operator with New England Tel & Tel. Soon she went into sales for the company, and did well. Rita and Val Muscato, a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and teacher and coach at Oliver Ames High School (North Easton, MA), became engaged in 1956. married in 1957, and took residence in North Easton. Shortly before marrying, Rita left working for the phone company, and dedicated herself to being a homemaker. It was a job and responsibility she considered of primary importance – and one she fully met, and with great success. Rita and Vals first child, Creighton (Creig), was born in 1958; Ross followed in 1963, and Suzy in 1965. Rita considered it important to share with her children, and she did share, stories of admirable and heroic men and women and historic feats and events. When her sons and daughter were young, she frequently read to them, with texts including those written by Henry Wordsworth Longfellow and Edgar Allen Poe. Rita Muscato was fond of quoting from literature; a favorite line she delivered were words that Polonius spoke in Shakespeares Hamlet: This above all: to thine own self be true;/And it must follow as the night the day/Thou canst not be false to any man/ From childhood and into early adulthood, Rita learned from her mother the importance of whole and fresh food – with this education reinforced when, soon after marrying and setting up a home in Easton, she attended the Fannie Farmer Cooking School in Brockton, Meat, fresh vegetables and fruits, butter, whole milk, and whole grain cereals were staples in the home she oversaw and managed. As well, to promote health, she advocated fresh air and sunshine and outdoor activity for her children. When the sun was out, and her children were inside, she would chide and urge them outdoors, saying, Its too nice a day to be in. Practicing and observing proper manners she considered fundamental to civil society and gracious living. Rita consulted books written by etiquette doyens Sylvia Post and Letitia Baldridge, and transmitted the lessons, protocols, and conduct learned to her family, often advising her children that one reason she did so was because, I don want you to be self-conscious when you eat at the White House. Through the years, as her husband achieved high accomplishment and distinction as an athletic coach and administrator at Oliver Ames, and as his vocation had him away from home often, Rita remained a supportive wife, and admired and was proud of his success – even as she was not adverse to letting her spouse know that she was well aware of his absence, and of how frequently and for how long he was out coaching and scouting and organizing and administering. Yet, for sure, Rita Muscato was close with the Oliver Ames High School community. Indeed, many of the student-athletes whom her husband coached and taught experienced Rita Muscatos kindness and caring. The effect and influence Rita Muscato had on OA student-athletes was expressed early in 1990 when Ron Buba (OA 59), starting guard for the OA team that won the 1959 Class C Tech Tourney at Boston Garden, paid a visit to his former coach. While perched next to Val Muscato on a couch in the Muscato homestead, Ron Buba called out to Rita who was sitting nearby, saying, Rita, you took care of us, too. For sure, Rita Muscato was a champion in her own right, performing as an all-star mother and civic participant. Both she and her husband were devoted Catholics, and they brought their children up in the spirituality, teachings, guidance, and culture of the Church. Husband and wife and children attended Immaculate Conception Church (North Easton) together, and prayed the rosary at home. Rita also participated in a rosary group at the Father Patrick Peyton in continued...
