Obituary: Marblehead---Johnes K. (Jay) Moore, age 84, of Marblehead, died 13, 2016 at Beverly Hospital from the effects of Parkinsons Disease and pneumonia. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Claire Keyes of Marblehead. Born in Chevy Chase, Maryland on 20, 1931, Jay was the son of Charles and Anna Louise Moore. He is pre-deceased by his two brothers, Charles (Tim) Moore and Sumner Moore. Educated at St. Albans School, Bowdoin and the Graduate School of Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island where he earned his Ph. D. Jay was Professor Emeritus at Salem State University where he was a member of the Biology Department. He taught courses in ecology and environmental science. An avid birder, he was a member of the Essex Ornithological Club where he served as President and, for many years, kept the books as Treasurer. He leaves behind three daughters, Winifred Wilhide and her husband David, Emily Devey and her husband Mark, Ellen Johnston and her husband Norman. In addition, he had six grandchildren: Maddigan and Sarah Devey, Callum and Glencora Wilhide, Aidan and Ryan Johnston and his ex-wife, Sandra Maddigan Moore, mother of his daughters. earning his B. A. from Bowdoin, he accepted a commission in the U. S. Marine Corps and served in Japan as commander of a tank corps in the interval between the Korean War and the war in Viet Nam. He continued his military service in the Marine Corps reserve and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His great-great grandfather played a key role in founding the Naval Academy in 1845 and his great-grandfather was captain of the U. S. S. Maine, in 1898, when it was blown up in Havana harbor, Cuba. Lt. Colonel Moores direct ancestors served in every U. S. war effort from the American Revolution through Viet Nam. More educator than soldier, Jay developed a keen interest in the importance of healthy estuaries. A member of the New England Estuarine Research Society, he was instrumental in bringing that group to Salem State for its first organizational meeting. He devoted considerable time and effort to the activities of the Salem Sound 2000 environmental science group. The Forest River and its environs were of particular interest to him and he helped raise the consciousness of numerous students about the importance of the local watershed. Drivers on Route 114 could spy him leading a group of students to the Forest River to observe the habitat. Lucky groups got to go to Chandler Hovey Park and witness the activities of the tide pools at Lighthouse Point. For him, the most significant lab was outdoors. This environmentalist morphed into a prodigious hiker and mountain climber and was initiated into the deeper realms of nature via an Outward Bound course in the Colorado Rockies, a life-changing experience which affected him personally and professionally. His only hesitation was rock climbing which proved incompatible with his life-long aversion to heights. Retiring after 25 years of service at Salem State University, Jay relaxed into his hobbies of sailing, birdwatching and traveling. He built several boats and was a member of the Salem Willows Yacht Club. Boats named Ammophila and Bucephala were known for their smart looks and for their abilities to win a race or two. Combining birdwatching and traveling proved the most invigorating vacation. He and his wife Claire joined Elderhostel (Road Scholar) and ventured to admire the birds in Costa Rica, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Greece, Italy and numerous locations in the States. A favorite haunt was New Mexico, with its stunning natural scenery, colorful arts and succulent food. Parkinsons disease slowed him down, but he could still be found at the Lynch Van Otterloo YMCA participating in the class designed for those with this egregious movement disorder. No longer able to hold up his binoculars, he gave up bird watching. May the birds of paradise bless him for his devotion, his passion and his love of the natural world. He will be missed.
