Obituary: Maureen C. McCloskey, a daughter of the late Charles A. and Margaret C. (Manning) McCloskey, died 1st at Catholic Memorial following a short illness. She was a proud 88 years of age. Born in Fall River, Maureen was active over the years in many parish and political activities and anything and everyone associated with her family and Irish upbringing. She was a prideful graduate of the former Sts. Peter and Paul School and Dominican Academy and worked as office manager and bookkeeper for the former Bo-Mar Mfg. in Fall River until her retirement. She was a volunteer in the Gift Shop at St. Annes Hospital for many years and also joined the citys Foster Grandparent Program, serving as an aide at the Westall School. A long-time member of the Democratic City Committee, Maureen also served as Fall Rivers representative to the Democratic State Committee, worked at city polling places for many years, and, following her fathers tradition, became involved in many political campaigns. Maureen also gained a wide-reaching degree of newsprint and TV notoriety on Election Day in 2012 when she was advised by officials that she could not vote because listing had her as having died. Her colorful protestation of the clerical mishap quickly led to a changing of that determination as she proudly cast her ballot. A Marian Medal recipient in recognition of service as a Eucharistic Minister and Womens Club Officer at Holy Name Church, she also had been active in parish associations at Sts. Peter and Paul, St. Williams and St. Mary of the Assumption Churches. She too was a member of the Irish Heritage Association. For many years, Maureen was active with the Massachusetts Catholic Order of Foresters at both the local Our Lady of Fatima Council and state levels. In 1994, she was recognized with the Forester of the Year Award. Family was of principal importance to Maureen. She was the historian of all families, members, and activities of McCloskey/Manning lineage. She also loved her candy, wore a Red Sox cap with pride following a victory, and enjoyed field trips. Maureen is survived by her sister Margo Waddicor (husband Stephen) and brother Thomas M. McCloskey of Fall River, and the troops that include Benjamin (and Ashley), Nathan, and Zachary Waddicor, Christina, Justin (and Leslie), Adam, and Christian McCloskey, and Megan (and Peter) Mandeville; and the following generations that include Wilson Waddicor; Sarah, Alexander, and Kaitlyn Madison-McCloskey; Matthew and Michelle McCloskey; Cole and Abigail Mandeville, Timothy (and Nancy) McCloskey, Maillie and Hannah McCloskey, and Emma Ternes; and many cousins, nephews, and nieces. Maureen was preceded in death by brothers John K., Charles A., and James J. McCloskey. Her funeral will be held on , 6, 2016 at 8:30am from the Waring-Sullivan of Memorial Tribute at Cherry Place 178 Winter St., Fall River, followed by her Mass at 9:30am in St. Margaret Mary Chapel at the Catholic Memorial , 2446 Highland Ave., Fall River. Visiting hours will be from 4 to 7pm. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Catholic Memorial , 2446, Highland Ave., Fall River, MA 02720 or to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701. Obituary: Janina (Pietraszek) McCloskey, a former Fall River Public Schools teacher and Lead Teacher of the Citys Head Start Program, passed away 30, at Charlton Memorial Hospital after an unexpected illness. She was 82 years of age. Born in Fall River, a daughter of the late Jan F. and Joanna (Maciag) Pietraszek, she was the wife of 58 years of Thomas M. McCloskey. resided at Waterview Heights after having lived for 38 years at 1393 Robeson Street raising their loving family of five children. Janina was a graduate of the former Dominican Academy and earned a Bachelor and Masters educational degrees from Bridgewater State University. She taught at the John J. Doran and Pine Street Schools in Fall River. In the mid-1960's, she became the Lead Teacher as Citizens for Citizens launched Fall Rivers Head Start Program at the former Park United Church on North Main Street and later at its Quarry Street Methodist Church location. She retired from that Program to raise her family. Janina was an ardent golfer and a long-time member of the Swansea Country Club, where she won several Ladies Division Championships, and took great pleasure in annual golfing trips with her husband to Myrtle Beach, SC. She also was very active with the Ocean State Womens Golf Association, both as a tournament participant and association officer. Following maternal tradition, Janina was fond of her kitchen and joyfully shared it with the children, Polish foods being a particular delight. She enjoyed dining out, sharing recipes, and critiquing TV food shows. Janina was always comfortable with a good book and her daily newspaper crossword puzzles. Her greatest delights, though, were her children and their children. Enforced by her unfailing love, each received invaluable life-betterment attention from their Grand, including an appreciation of the wonderment and beauty of natures flowers and birds. Any family gathering was important to her and a cherished occasion. In addition to her husband, their surviving 1393 family includes Christina, Justin and his wife Leslie, Adam and Christian McCloskey, and Megan Mandeville and her husband Peter, and her very special Anioleks (Angels): grandchildren Sarah and Alexander Madison- McCloskey, Mathew and Michelle McCloskey, and Cole and Abigail Mandeville, and great granddaughter Kaitlyn Madison-McCloskey. She is survived also by her brother, Jan F. Pietraszek and his wife Margaret, an aunt and several nephews and cousins. In a typical Janina gesture of thoughtfulness and charity, she donated her remains to the Harvard Medical School, for education, research, and science/therapy advancement. A Memorial Mass for Janina will be celebrated on , 10, 2015 at 10:00AM in Holy Name Church, 709 Hanover St., Fall River. Relatives and friends are invited. The family will greet guests at the church prior to her Mass from 9:30 to 10:00AM. In lieu of flowers the family the family asks that you take a loved one to dinner or make a donation to a charity of your choice. |
