Obituary: James “Jim” Mellis was born in Weirton, WV on 6, 1935. He came into this world following his identical twin brother, John Mellis, much to his parent’s surprise. that grand entrance he and his brother John proved to be a joyful handful for his parents, George and Mary Mellis, and sister, Irene. Whether it was taking tests for each other (when the teachers could not tell them apart), or “boxing” away their disputes under the watchful eye of their father, the “twins” were always a source of joy and laughter. As the years moved on Jim and his brother, John, moved to Minnesota after graduating from Weirton High School to enroll in the 1956 Remington-Rand UNIVAC Computer Class in the pioneering days of computers. Prior to leaving for Minnesota, he met Myrna Hatzis at a 4th of picnic. In spite of some confusion (thinking she had seen him in two different places at the same time before realizing he was an identical twin), the two quickly became enamored with one another. While in Minnesota (and regularly corresponding with Myrna), Uncle Sam called the twins up for active duty. joined the US Army and served in Germany until 1959 – earning a Good Conduct Medal and Letter of Commendation. Shortly after returning from the Army, Jim reconnected with Myrna. Within a year the two were engaged and later married on 25, 1960. shortly moved to New Jersey and a year later son, George, followed by Maria two years later and Renee one year thereafter – on 25th as a surprise anniversary present. Jim brought his new family to Massachusetts to work with General Dynamics on the recovery ships for the Apollo Space program after earning his license as a Professional Electronic Engineer. The family moved to the Washington, DC area in 1969 when Jim took a position with the US Navy Sea Systems Command working on designs of various naval ships and submarines. Jim’s position took him all over the country as well as the world; however, he always made time for his family. Whether it was volunteering for little league coaching, working on the house he and Myrna loved, or helping the kids with homework, Jim never hesitated to step in. As time passed the family expanded with the marriage of daughter Renee to Jim Hyrkas and son George to Patty Davis. With these unions Jim and Myrna welcomed their seven grandchildren (Andrew, Jamie, Nikki, Christina, Athena, Dimitri and Anna Marie) with great delight. In a tongue in cheek manner, Jim insisted the grandchildren refer to him as “Mr. Papou” (Papou being Greek for grandfather); after which the title “stuck”. Jim’s unassuming and humorous manner often made those around him feel at ease and full of laughter. Never one to boast – unless it was about his family – many of his accomplishments and awards were never fully acknowledged. He worked for the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) for over 30 years; was a member of the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE), published several articles for ASNE and the Naval Engineer’s Journal, and was a 32nd degree Master Mason for 50 years. More so, Jim was a quiet hero performing acts like: helping a stranded young girl on the side of the road; or taking a young couple who are about to give birth when their car broke down to a clinic for help; or hiring a young woman with promise in spite of other’s recommendations not to hire her “because she may need to go to the doctor a lot because of her health condition”. His philosophy was always to support his family; live a decent life and laugh along the way. He remained very close with his twin brother John – often reverting back to their mischievous selves when reuniting. He and Myrna shared a strong, loving marriage of 56+ years. He was always readily available to his children and grandchildren whether it was for advice, assistance or to watch the Pirates of Penzance. In spite of enduring two major surgeries (open heart surgery in 1986 and brain surgery in 2012), Jim surpassed the odds and pulled through to prove his commitment to his family. Jim will be remembered dearly by his family and friends. May his memory be eternal. |
