I Corinthians 13:13 Always appreciate the smell of the roses… …was the way of life for Carolyn McClain. She believed truly that in spite of everything and everyone…tomorrow would take care of itself. Carolyn was born 25, 1948 in Florence, South Carolina, the eldest child of the late Boston, Sr. and Carrie Mae McClain. She spent the early years of her life between the home of her parents and that of her grandparents, Mack and Daisy McCants, who she affectionately called – Mama and Grand. Carolyn was a proud 1966 graduate of Wilson High School in Florence, South Carolina. She matriculated to Spelman in Atlanta, Georgia graduating in 1970 with a degree in Economics. Carolyn moved to Washington, DC the summer following her graduation and lived there until the time of her passing. Carolyns entire professional career was spent as a dedicated employee of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in the Washington Office. She was employed as a Program Analyst in the Office of Fair Housing Equal Opportunity Division. At the time of her passing she was completing her 44th year. Carolyn was a person of strong faith. She joined Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church at a young age. moving to Washington, DC, she joined Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church (the National Cathedral of African Methodism) on 4, 1988 under the pastoral leadership of Bishop William P. DeVeaux. Her love of God and her commitment and dedication to her church was evident in her work in church ministry. Throughout her years as a member of Metropolitan, she served in numerous leadership capacities – Trustee, Class Leader, Editor of the Metropolitan Spirit newsletter, President of the Ladies Guild, President of the Presidents Council and most recently, First Vice President of the Womens Missionary Society. With a big heart to serve, her work went beyond being a leader – as a member of Metropolitan she also served as a member of the Public Relations Commission, member of the South Carolina Club, the Connection Ministry and the Commission on Christian Education. As a dedicated member of the Womens Missionary Society, Carolyn had a passion for serving others. She led Project Angel Tree for over 20 years and could be found every 4th distributing food from the churchs Food Bank. Her love of missions went beyond the walls of Metropolitan. She has served on both the Area (former Historiographer) and Conference (Historiographer since 2007) levels. Carolyn had the gift of words and writing. She used the power of the pen to make all family occasions, whether joyous (weddings) or sorrowful (funerals) memorable and meaningful for the family. This gift was also used to witness her spiritual beliefs as she contributed to church newsletters and the annual Lent and Advent booklets published by Metropolitan. Carolyn will always be a part of us in spirit. She will truly be missed by those who loved her dearly – her mother, (Carrie Mae), life partner, (Jimmy), siblings (Boston, Jr., Maxine, Malachi (Angella) and Kym), her special niece, (Déjà) and special cousin, Roy Ann Jolley (Freddie), aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. , 7, 2014 marked a new start for Carolyn. She answered the call and began a new phase of her Christian life when she went home to be with the Lord. While she leaves a void in the lives of those who knew and loved her, we know that while here on earth she truly let her light shine…and truly appreciated the smell of the roses. |
