Obituary: DON LEONARDO MARTÍNEZ ACCOMPLISHED HIS MISSION
A Full Lifetime of Duty, Honor, and Country
By Sam Rodríguez Last I got the unavoidable call. On night, I went to visit Don Leonardo Martínez at the hospital and realized that he had little time left and was saying his last goodbye. Seeing Don Leonardo, I realized that he had fulfilled his mission with us and now he was ready for eternal rest. At that moment I felt several emotions, including my own experience with the loss of my father and grandfather. Don Leonardo Martínez was a Puerto Rican gentleman who lived a full life of sacrifices, dedication and honorable service to our nation. He raised his family, and at end of his struggle represented and advocated for the 65th Infantry Regiment known as the Borinqueneers, in Congress, at the White House, and in Baltimore City. When President Obama signed into Public Law No. 113-120, the awarding of the Congressional Gold Medal (CGM), Don Leonardo Martínez was present - in this very historic moment - thus achieving his dream and supporting the struggle of many trying to achieve equality and recognition for their service and sacrifices defending our nation during the Korean War. At this Presidential ceremony, were present several supporters of the legislation, members of the legislative branch who were the architects and supporters of the legislation such as Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, Rep. Bill Posey of Florida, and Rep. Pedro R. Pierluisi of Puerto Rico. In addition, Vice-President Joe Biden and current Governor of Puerto Rico, Alejandro García Padilla, some Borinqueneers who came from Puerto Rico, Connecticut, Florida, Chicago were also present and Don Leonardo Martínez from Maryland who sat to the left of President Obama. The executive ceremony to sign into law to award the Congressional Gold Medal was very touching, well-organized and pleasant. Mostly, patriotism and respect for the Borinqueneers was the most inspiring accent of the occasion. In order for that day to take place, we must always recognize and remember the work done by all who worked diligently to witness that day. In particular, we value the extent and impact of the contributions of our beloved Don Leonardo Martínez. During the year I spent advocating and seeking legislative co-sponsors in Maryland and other states, it was my responsibility to involve Don Leonardo Martínez in the process, yet he was in a delicate age. My time with him had to be carefully managed. From the beginning of the legislative co-sponsorship phase, I asked for help and felt that there was not much interest or support from other residents and the community at large. At a Christmas party, a distinguished visionary acquaintance told me directly and bluntly ... Thats a bridge too far to reach ... That comment struck me hard and I was saddened for the rest of the evening and the Christmas season. I was running out of options … it was not until I finally met Don Leonardo Martínez that I could see the light at the end of the tunnel. Meeting Don Leonardo was for sure a game changer. Upon meeting him my vision began to clear up; I envisioned seeing him next to the President. I remember saying to him ... Don Leonardo ... soon we will go to the White House, and he answered confused ... What White House? Don Leonardo did not understand the reason for my visit. It took me a while to get Don Leonardo to understand the drive of my visit. I played a CD of the Borinqueneer documentary and one of the salsa music of the 65th Infantry Regiment. It was then that Don Leonardo started telling me the story of when he was wounded in Korea. Don Leonardo rose from his bed and went to his living room where he sat down on his chair; he put on his commemorative hat from Korea, and he allowed me to take several photos and a video of him talking to me. This moment was unique and totally changed my expectations. Then Don Leonardo began to understand the reason of my visit. The mission of Don Leonardo Martínez was to participate and be present at events as living Borinqueneer during the process and ceremonies. Don Leonardo looks at me, fixed with a gentle smile, and said ... okay. Then Don Leonardo tells his son Angel, to tell Miguel. That detail meant that Don Leonardo ordered and committed his eldest son Miguel to get involved in the process to get more co-sponsors. The next day, I was connected with Miguel who resides in New Mexico. It turns out that the eldest son of Don Leonardo, Miguel Martínez is an industrialist and a go-getter. Just a week after having spoken with Miguel Martínez, he made contact with the Lieutenant Governor of New Mexico. He sent me a picture of him with the Lieutenant Governor and a copy of an official letter from the Lieutenant Governor sent to Senator Tom Udall. Also, Miguel went to Phoenix, Arizona to seek support and get petitions. As a result of his hard work, Miguel sent me over 400 petitions! Since 10, 2014, I began to move and send portraits of Don Leonardo Martínez to Senators Barbara Mikulski and Ben Cardin, and Rep. Steny Hoyer. The responses were immediate and even when I met with Representative Steny Hoyers spokesman ... was quite evident that the legislation would be approved soon. On 25, 2014, Senator Ben Cardin signed on as a co-sponsor of S. 1174 and Senator Mikulski signed on 10th. When the final vote was to be held in the Gallery of the House of Representatives, I coordinated for Don Leonardo to be present during the legislative session as the only Borinqueneer representative. During the speeches, the representatives acknowledged and mentioned Don Leonardo in order to demonstrate and emphasize the importance of the legislation; at the end of the session … the vote was unanimous and at the Senate continued...
