Obituary: Portland- Nancy Martin 85, of Erchles St. Rumford died 5, 2011 at Maine Medical surrounded by her family. She was born in Mexico, ME on 17, 1925 a daughter of the late Bruno and Rose (Samarco) Buccina. She was educated in local schools and graduated from Mexico High School, Class of 1943. She married the love of her life Vincent G. Martin Sr. on 27, 1952 who predeceased her in 1970. She was a member of St. Athanasius and St. John Church. She had incredible passion for reading and her typical pace was a book per day. Her shopping excursions with Aunt Liz were legendary within the family. Recent trips to Hollywood Slots with friends were also classic. Next to watching her Red Sox beat the Yankees, her most prized activity was simply spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. There is nothing she treasured more than hosting holiday meals with her whole family sitting around the table. Surviving are a daughter, Darlene Capponi and her husband Antonio of Steep Falls; three sons, Vincent G. Martin Jr. and his wife Christine of Standish, Glenn Martin and his wife Kaye of Hendersonville, TN and Craig Martin and his wife Julie of Poland; seven grandchildren, Ryan and Randa Capponi, Amanda, Vincent III, Emily, Caleb and Kylie Martin; three sisters, Jennie Curato of Rumford, Rose McInnis of Rumford and Ann Tripp and her husband Percy of Westbrook; and a brother Joseph Buccina and his wife Olga of Rumford. Obituary: Nancy Powers Martin Freeport - Nancy Powers Martin, 96, the widow of Gordon Elmer Martin, of South Freeport, died on , 4, 2011. Born in West Medford, Mass. on Dec. 20, 1914, a daughter of Albert Blake Powers and Katherine Gertrude Bacon, she attended Medford schools, summered with her family at Ferry Beach in Saco and was graduated in 1937 from the University of New Hampshire, where she was queen of the May Day Pageant and a member of Alpha Chi Omega, a sorority. She did graduate studies at the University of Maine in Orono. Nancy married Gordon E. Martin of Portland, a classmate at UNH, in Portland on 29, 1940. were married for 59 years, until his death on 16, 2000. The couple lived in Portland until 1970, when they built their treasured dream house in the woods at Spar Cove in Freeport, the site of many happy gatherings with their children and beloved grandchildren. Grandson Ben Martin, born in Portland, son Peter Martin and daughter-in-law Marlene de Reeder, visited frequently from their home in San Diego, so Ben could enjoy Maines blizzards and hurricanes from the deck overlooking nearby birch trees. Peter and Ben helped restore the Martins Royal Lowell lobster boat and enjoyed trips to Pound of Tea Island in Freeport, then owned by Gordons brother. Grandchildren Jennifer and Jonathan Lovell, of Portland, had their own rooms at their grandparents house, and most visits resulted in their learning new skills such as cookery and photography. Nancy liked to walk through Spar Cove Forest with her grandchildren, teaching them the names of the plants and animals they saw there. She owned several collie dogs and enjoyed showing them. During a Vacationland Dog Club of Maine sanctioned match, her dog, ironically named Champ, sat down in the ring and refused to move no matter what command she gave or how hard she pulled on his lead. that, she gave up showing dogs and just enjoyed their antics and companionship. Her favorite dog was Emily, a Samoyed-golden retriever cross who had a big white heart-shaped spot on her forehead. Mrs. Martin was a home demonstration agent for the UNH extension service from 1937 until 1940. During the 1950s, she was chief therapeutic dietitian at Mercy Hospital in Portland, and was a faculty member of the Mercy Hospital School of . She was a consultant to the Portland City Hospital (now the Barron ), to the Pineland Hospital and Training in Pownal, and to the Central Maine Area Agency on Aging, and was an advisory council member of Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute (now Southern Maine Community ). In the early 1960s, she became director of nutrition services for the Maine Department of Mental and Corrections, where she pioneered the centralized management of food service operations for ten institutions. She received the Distinguished Service Award from Governor James B. Longley. her retirement from the Department of Mental and Corrections in the early 1980s, Mrs. Martin continued to act as a consultant for various institutions. A member and past deacon of the South Freeport Church, she was a former member of Woodfords Congregational Church in Portland. She was a member of the Psi Lambda Honorary Society, the Freeport Womens Club, the Womens Legislative Council of Maine, and the Maine Association of Retirees. Mrs. Martin enjoyed seafood, especially shellfish, and was proud of the fact that her great grandfather, Allen Holbrook Bacon of Wellfleet, Mass. and his cousin, Hawes Atwood, founded Bostons Union Oyster House and many Atwood & Bacon Oyster Houses during the 1800s. Survivors include her son, Peter Gilman Martin of North Las Vegas, Nevada, and his son, Benjamin Pearson Martin of Las Vegas; Mrs. John (Susan Blake Martin) Lovell of Portland and her children, Jennifer Blake Lovell Adams and Jonathan Wallace Lovell, both of Portland. She was predeceased by her sister, Katherine Bacon Powers Towne. In of 2010, Mrs. Martin became a resident of the Franklin Unit of the Hawthorne House in Freeport. The victim of many strokes, a brain tumor, vasculitis, polymyalgia rheumatica, arthritis, and dementia, she died of pneumonia after a fall that resulted in her breaking a hip. A private graveside service will be held at the family plot at Evergreen in Portland at the convenience of the family. Obituary: Mary Elizabeth Martin died 12, 2013 at home in Harpswell. She was born in Framingham, MA on 7, 1927, the daughter of Lillian Thurston and her first husband. Lillian took Mary and her younger brother John to Presque Isle to live with grandmother Lena Thurston while Lillian moved to Portland to look for work during the Great Depression. finding a job as a tailor at Marcus Bothers, Lillian collected her children when Mary and John were in their early teens and moved them to Portland to be with her. Although John couldn acclimate to city life and returned to Presque Isle, Mary thrived. Mary married Bradford N. Martin on 14, 1947, and together they raised six children. Mary worked steadily during her childrens youth while Brad was at sea with the Merchant Marine and later when he was a firefighter for the City of Portland. Among other positions, she worked for a number of years in the Meat Department at the old Federal Market where she formed life-long friendships. Brad and Mary lived in one half of a duplex at the corner of Franklin and Lancaster Streets in Portland. Brads brother Wayne and his late wife, Beverly, lived in the other side of the duplex with their five children. Because of the closeness of the two families, both physically and emotionally, Mary was often the second mother figure for the five cousins, as well as mother of her own six, fixing meals and caring for all eleven. Over the years at different times, she provided a home for various nieces and nephews, at least one former spouse of a divorced child, and others who needed a temporary home and a mothers undiscriminating love. Once you were part of Marys family, you were always her child. Marys children and her nieces and nephews called or visited with her almost daily for advice and counsel, or just plain friendship. Mary loved babies and never let a grandchilds or great-grandchilds birthday go by without attending with an armful of presents, many of which she knitted or crocheted herself. She was a caring person and was involved in her familys lives as Momma, Aunt Mary, Grammie or Great-Grammie and enjoyed a close relationship with all of them. Most remarkable about Mary was her ability to provide love, support, and advice to anyone who needed and wanted it. Her approach was non-judgmental, gentle and caring. As she aged, there never seemed to be a time when she was out and about that one of her many extended family members didn stop her to tell her how much her support had meant to them. Her generosity, tolerance, and open heart influenced many peoples lives positively. She provided in-home care for her mother in the latters last years. Among Marys many other accomplishments, she was a breast cancer survivor of over thirty years. She was rarely idle and almost constantly had a knitting or crochet project in her lap; whether it was a gift or something she would sell at a craft show or church bazaar. Mary gave the money from these sales to St. Judes and Ronald McDonald House. Many of her baby quilts, sweaters, and hats she sent to Ronald McDonald House or Maine Medical . She was a special lady. |
