Obituary: Valva C. Midkiff of Lexington, KY passed away , 13, 2014. He was born in Fordsville, Kentucky on 9, 1916, the son of the late Heber and Della Greer Midkiff. When Valva was seven months old, he was diagnosed with polio. This crippling disease presented a lifelong challenge which he overcame with determination. He attended a one room school at Belmont. His father was his first teacher. fourth grade, he attended school in Fordsville as a boarding student. He graduated from high school in 1935. He was the last surviving member of that class. Mr. Midkiff is a graduate of Western Kentucky State Teachers majoring in chemistry and physics. He taught one year at a rural elementary school in Breckinridge . The next year, he taught at Fordsville High School. The following two years, he taught chemistry at Owensboro High School during World War II. He had the opportunity to move to Lexington in 1943 to do graduate studies. He took a job as a chemist at the University of Kentucky Agricultural Experiment Station in the Feeds and Fertilizer Department where he became head of the lab department. Mr. Midkiff retired with a masters degree in organic chemistry. Valva was a musician. He learned to play piano and violin at an early age. He and his brothers enjoyed playing string music at community events and family reunions. Mr. Midkiff was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Dawson Midkiff and a son, Mark Dawson Midkiff. He is survived by his son, David Valva Midkiff. David has been his compassionate caretaker for many years. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Daniel, Clay, Mary, Adam, Drew and Lexi Midkiff; his five siblings, Noble and Lincoln Midkiff of Whitesville, Jim Greer (Opal) of Brandenburg, Esther McCoy and Markley Freer of Owensboro, plus several nieces and nephews. Services are 3:00 p.m. on , 18, 2014, at the Chapel of James H. Davis & Crematory in Owensboro. Burial is in Pleasant Hill in Magan (Ohio ), KY. Visitation is from 11:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. on at the funeral home. Obituary: Noah Clarence Nowie Midkiff, 72 of Owensboro, went to be with his Lord on 9, 2007 after a brief battle with cancer. Nowie was a loving husband and father, and a devoted Pop-pop to his grandchildren. He possessed a generous, fun-loving nature whether he was sharing vegetables from his garden with his beloved neighbors or teasing his loved ones with humorous nicknames. He attended Macedonia Baptist Church with Christian joy, especially enjoying the gospel music. Singing gave him such pleasure, often breaking into song in mid-conversation, never forgetting a word. Nowie endeared himself to everyone around him, from his hunting buddies to nurses. His love of nature defined itself in his passion for hunting, whether it was deer, turkey or quail. He was a wonderful storyteller, entertaining loved ones with tales of horse trading and a childhood that, while difficult, made him the strong person that he was. Nowie had little formal education but made sure his children had the opportunity and desire to pursue higher education. He retired from Alcoa and was a member of the Aluminum Workers of America. Mr . Midkiff was preceded in death by a granddaughter; Mills-Anne Rowland, his mother and step-father Lannie and Lonnie Kuykendall, his father; Clarence Midkiff, and father-in-law; Paul Robinson. Surviving are his wife of 50 years; Ann Midkiff, a son; Brock (Teresa) Midkiff of Russellville, Ky., daughters; Jennifer (John) Rowland of Cedar Hill, TN., Kris-Anne (Kenny) Ferguson and Rebecca (Jason) Huff of Fordsville, his mother-in-law; Ira Mae Robinson, and grandchildren; Noah Richeson, Ethan, and Katie-John Rowland, Zebulon, Sinclair and Kennedy Ferguson, and R.J. and Riley Brey, and step-grandchildren; Scott Creek, Stephanie Hahne, Vanessa and Justin Ferguson and Lane Huff, one great-grandchild; Chloe Richeson, and a beloved sister-in-law; Paula Smith of Owensboro, and several dear cousins, nephews and nieces. services will be 2:00 p.m., , 13, 2007 at Glenn with Rev. She was preceded in death by three siblings, Roger, Ryland Miller, and C.W. Dawson. Mrs. Midkiff was a graduate of Whitesville High School in 1939. She was valedictorian of her class and graduated at sixteen years old. She was married to Valva C. Midkiff on 7, 1943. To this union, she was the mother of two sons, David Valva Midkiff and the late Mark Dawson Midkiff. her marriage, she worked for the University of Kentucky as secretary to Adolph Rupp. She also served as secretary in the Rural Sociology Department at UKs of Education. starting college when she was in her 40s, Mrs. Midkiff graduated in the upper three percent of her class. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa in recognition of high attainments in liberal scholarship. graduation from the University of Kentucky, she taught French and English at Morton Junior High School. One of her passions in life was taking multiple trips to Europe and Asia with her students and family. She enjoyed attending concerts and shared the love of music with her husband and sons. She is survived by her husband Valva; their oldest son David, who has been her caretaker for four years; and six grandchildren, Daniel, Clay, Mary, Adam, Drew, and Lexi Midkiff. Surviving is her daughter, Joyce Gibbs and husband Jack of Spring Hill, Fla., four grandchildren, Keith Gibbs of Cadiz, Kecia Whittaker of Bowling Green, Kerry Gibbs of Monroe, N. C., and John Allen Midkiff of Tallahassee, Fla., and four great grandchildren. Services will be 1:00 P.M. , 5, at the Glenn Chapel with burial following in Rosehill . Visitation will be after 10:00 A.M. at the funeral home. Obituary: Ann Etta Netta Midkiff, 70, went to be with the Lord on 26 at her home after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Noah Midkiff; her parents, Paul and Ira Mae Robinson; two brothers, Arnold Robinson and Larry Robinson; and one granddaughter, Mills-Anne Rowland. Survivors include one son, Brock (Teresa) Midkiff of Russellville; three daughters, Jennifer (John) Rowland of Owensboro, Kris-Anne Ferguson of Fordsville and Rebecca (Jason) Huff also of Fordsville; eight grandchildren; and several nephews, nieces and cousins. Also surviving are one sister, Paula (Roger) Smith and a dear, dear friend, Caroline Haynes, both of Owensboro. Netta was born on 21, 1939 in Narrows, Kentucky. She was raised in a Christian home with loving parents. graduating high school from Hartford, Netta married and quickly started a family. She devoted herself to raising four children, overcoming many obstacles to create the happiest home she could. Netta possessed an overly inquisitive nature and displayed this through avid reading and an adventurous spirit. She loved nature from afar, being more of a city girl, and was delighted with every change of season or even with a subtle ray of sunlight that rendered the earth, in her eyes, especially beautiful. Netta was generous to a fault and held within her just an overwhelming, perpetual wealth of love that she shared not only with her own children and grandchildren but also the children of others whom she cared for and taught in school. She had two wonderful friends, her sister Paula, her very beloved friend of 63 years, and Caroline, a forever Subway friend as well. Netta was a library volunteer, reading literature for the blind until her own sight failed her. She loved to shop and was conscientious about her houses and her own appearance, especially when she attended her church, Macedonia Baptist. Not a vain person, Netta simply believed it was a Christian responsibility to build on Gods gifts, and her elegant, refined beauty was certainly a gift only surpassed by her internal beauty. Momma, Mam-Mam, Grammy and Mimi was the leader of her family, ascertaining that everyone attend church and have the opportunities she herself did not have. Such a bright light will sorely be missed but we know she is walking with no pain and smiling with such love because she is finally . Visitation is at Glenn and Crematory from 4 to 8 and from 10 to noon. services are at noon at Glenn and Crematory with burial following at Fordsville .
