Obituary: Robert Bob Malley passed away peacefully on , 23, 2015 at KC Hospice House surrounded by his loving family. Visitation will be at Cure of Ars Catholic Church, Leawood, KS, at 9 a.m. on 27th followed by a funeral mass at 10 a.m. Burial at Mt. Olivet . Bob was born 7, 1922 in Kansas City, Missouri to Henry A. and Dora F. (Grogman) Malley. He was educated by the Jesuits at St. Francis Xavier School, Rockhurst High School and Rockhurst , all within walking distance of his boyhood home. Bob worked to help pay his way by running the Rockhurst bookstore and assisting in the library. These jobs allowed him access to the books his inquisitive mind treasured, but allowed time for participation in intramural activities and reporting sports for the Rockhurst Sentinel. Bob was a faithful friend to his grade school and high school classmates and fellow Golden Hawks of the Rockhurst class of 1942. He loved playing golf, volunteering and socializing with these lifelong friends. Bob studied Chemistry and Math, but also enjoyed humanities and philosophy. His Jesuit teachers trained him to think logically, to learn constantly, and to articulate his thoughts clearly and precisely, a formation that enabled him to become a successful business leader and volunteer. earning his Chemistry degree at Rockhurst in 1942, Bob was sent by the Army Air Force to the University of Chicago for a year to study meteorology. He spent two years in England with the Great 8th Air Force where he forecasted weather conditions for three fighter groups that escorted bombers over Europe. Bob completed his service with the rank of Captain. returning from the war, he and his older brother, Henry, purchased the Deady Chemical which treated industrial water nationwide to clean it for further use. It was an exciting opportunity because the country was emerging from the deprivations of the war to booming expansion. Bob served as Vice President until the company was sold to Olin Water Services 30 years later. He continued as Vice President for Olin until he retired. his retirement, Bob and Margaret enjoyed traveling extensively around the world. loved spending time in their later years at the Lake of the Ozarks. On 23, 1948, he married the love of his life, Mary Margaret Ormsby, at Visitation Church in Kansas City Missouri and they enjoyed 66 years together, successfully raising eight children. The most important thing to Bob was his family. He was a loving and devoted father and grandfather. He was very proud that his children graduated from the University of Kansas, resulting in him being an avid KU fan. He was a strong supporter of all of his children, 19 grandchildren and four great grandchildren and he took pride in each of their accomplishments. His memorable holiday speeches and jokes will be forever cherished and missed. Bob was very active in the Kansas City Community. He served first on the Alumni Board of Rockhurst and then as a Senior Ambassador to help Fr. Maurice Van Ackeren represent Rockhurst to area businesses. He and his wife were longtime volunteers at St. Josephs Hospital; he received recognition for 4,000+ volunteer hours. Bob was the founding president of Patrons of Marillac School and active in the Rotary Club as well as the Serra Club. He regularly held leadership positions in the Kansas City, KS United Way annual fund raising efforts, including serving as the Major Gifts Chair in a successful campaign. While he changed lives through these volunteer activities, his own life was touched by a speech at the Advertising and Sales Executives Club, where he was a member. An actor by the name of Ronald Reagan spoke to the club on the topic of Waste in Government. Bob has been a Reagan booster and lifelong Republican ever since. Throughout his life, Bob continued to enjoy books and read extensively. Bob spoke often of how thrilled he was when major league sports came to his hometown - first with the arrival of the Kansas City Athletics followed by the Chiefs and then the Royals. Bob is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Henry and George, sister Mary Margaret and son Michael. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Margaret, and by their eight children: Robert Malley, Jr., Betsy (Randy) McWhirter, Terry Malley, Susan (Jim) Eagan, Peggy Collins (the late Charlie Collins), Mary Anne (Gary) Wilson, Dennis (Nancy) Malley and Maureen (Kevin) OToole. Bob and Mary Margaret have been active parishioners at Cure of Ars Catholic Church since its inception. His lifelong Catholic faith as well as commitment to his country has had a profound effect on his eight children, 19 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He looks for them to continue to maintain their faith as they exercise their duties as American citizens. His wide smile, wise advice and loving interest will be missed by all. In lieu of flowers, The family requests memorial contributions to the Robert J. Malley Endowment Fund at Rockhurst University or Kansas City Hospice House.
