Obituary: Dr. Loren Charles Maas passed away on , 31, 2014 at his home with his family and friends around him. Loren was born 25, 1933, to Carl and Minna (Newkirk) Maas at South Amana, Iowa. His childhood was spent on the family farm where he developed a long standing love of animals that later became his profession. He graduated from Marengo High School and was active in multi sports which remained a lifelong interest and passion. The Atlanta Braves and Iowa Hawkeyes were his teams. Trivia questions? Loren knew the answers. Loren went on to attend (then) Iowa State where he graduated in 1955 with a B.S. degree in agronomy and a commission in the U.S. Air Force. The next few years were spent in pilot training and then as a pilot of the B-47 jet bomber in Stragetic Air Command. On 28, 1956, Loren and Janet Fritz were united in marriage in Blakesburg, Iowa. made their home in Savannah, Georgia while he was stationed at Hunter Air Force base during his air force days. Loren later returned to Iowa State University and enrolled in the college of veterinary medicine, graduating in 1967. Upon graduation, he received the Upjohn Award for being the most proficient in clinical medicine and then joined Dr. James Lowe in the Animal Clinic in Iowa City where he was in veterinary practice for over thirty years. Loren was active in his profession and chaired many state committees, was president of the Eastern Iowa Veterinary Association and was an honorary member of the state organization. He was also an honorary member of the Missouri Veterinary Association. He enjoyed the continuing contact with veterinarians in retirement and looked forward to the quarterly senior veterinary luncheons. Very often, Loren was asked to be the master of ceremonies of events where people enjoyed his sense of humor and storytelling ability. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Janet: their two children, Dr. Curt Maas and Lora Edwards: their son-in-law Hal Edwards: four grandchildren Hank (Ashley), Jessica, Hayden and Hunter Edwards all of whom live in the Kansas City, KS area: one great grandaughter, Hazel Edwards: his sister, Betty Wagner of Cedar Rapids and sister-in-law, Barbara Cook of Blakesburg, Iowa. Four nieces and nephews also survive him. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers-in-law, Dean Wagner and Dick Cook. A memorial service will be held for Loren at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, 1300 Melrose Ave. on , 10th at 1:00 p.m.. The family will greet guests during a reception that will follow the service in the fellowship room. There will be a private burial at a later date. Loren will always remain in the hearts of his family and of the many friends who expressed support during the three years of his illness. The family would also like to thank Lorens physician and friend, Dr. Ann Broderick, for her continuing support during this difficult time. Obituary: Carl Dale Maas, 88, of Davenport, passed away on , 25, 2014 at the Davenport Lutheran . services will be held at 12 Noon, , 30, 2014 in the Runge Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be from10:30-12 pm, at the mortuary. Burial, with military graveside rites provided by Bettendorf VFW Post 9128, will be in Davenport Memorial Park . Memorials may be made to the Honor Flight of the Quad Cities. Online condolences may be expressed at www.rungemortuary.com. He was born 23, 1925 in Billings, Montana, a son of Adolph and Anna (Holz) Maas. He moved to Davenport as an infant. Following his graduation from Davenport High School he served in the United States Marine Corps in the Sixth Marines in the South Pacific and China. On 15, 1950 he married Jo-Ann Nowling in Council Bluffs, Iowa. would have celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary next month. Dale was Supervisor of the Rubber and Plastic Department at the Rock Island Arsenal. He retired 5, 1980 after 30 years of service. Following his retirement, he and his wife spent each on the island of Maui. The visited for 23 years until poor health made it difficult to travel. made many friends there and renewed their wedding vows on their 50th wedding anniversary. Dale played baseball in the old Diamond League and many softball teams in Davenport and Rock Island. He was an active bowler on many teams, including his family team that included his father, two uncles and a brother. His greatest passion was golf. His memberships included Davenport VFW Post 828, where he had served as Past Commander, was a life-long member of the American Turner Society and NARFE. He was also an avid Cub and Hawkeye fan. Survivors include his wife, Jo-Ann; son Jeff (Dr. Fay) Maas, daughter Leslie (Brad) Oates, daughter Lori (Brian) Groves; grandchildren: Aaron Oates (Maggie), Kelly (Ryan) Duffy and Ben, Andy and Jackie Groves; one great grandson, Alexander Oates and a brother, Pastor Dean Maas; along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother, Velma Maas, brother, Donald Maas and a sister-in-law, Marjorie Maas. |

Obituary: Della M. Van Maanen, 86, of Ankeny passed away 20, 2015. services will be held 11:00 a.m., , 24, 2015 at Memorial Services of Iowa funeral chapel. A visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the service. Della was born 10, 1929 to Wilson Clark and Carrie Verros Clark in Harvey, Iowa. She met Pete Van Maanen, and they were married 22, 1947. were married 43 years until Petes passing in 1990. spent many years farming together in several Iowa locations. Della helping to plant and harvest crops and care for the livestock. Together, they were members of Oskaloosa Reformed Church, Prairie City Reformed Church, and after moving to Ankeny, they joined Bethany Reformed Church. Dellas friends at Bethany were a very important part of her life. It was always fun listening to her stories about Bethany retreats and the outings she went on with friends. When they retired from farming, they moved to Ankeny, and Della went to work for Look magazine, and later Community State Bank. She shared many fond memories of her time working at the bank. Dellas favorite past time was sewing. She always made many of her own clothes and clothes for her daughters. She loved to cross stitch and made many projects for family and friends, and made dolls and bears for her grandchildren. In 1989, Della suffered a brain aneurism. Through her hardship, she seldom complained, and always had a happy, positive upbeat attitude. She was well loved by the nurses and staff at MillPond Community. Della is survived by her 3 children, Karen (Michael) Sell of Bella Vista, Arkansas, Sandy Van Maanen of Ankeny, Iowa, and Bruce (Sherry) Van Maanen of Omaha, Nebraska; 6 grandchildren, Steven (Andrea) Archer, Michael (Sheila) Archer, Justin (Trista) Sell, Jeremy (Carla) Sell, Trudy (Cris) Averett, and Shannon (Mike)Koski; 9 great-grandchildren, Alex, Luke, Sydne, Gage, Monica, Meredith, Libby, Sammy, and Karly; 2 sisters, Verna Sytsma and Luetta (Don) Slagter; and a brother, LeRoy (Carolyn) Clark. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Pete, and two great-grandsons, Michael and William Sell.
