Obituary: On the eve of his 100th birthday, a Greenwood man said he didn think the milestone date was such a big deal. Fred Mize has beaten cancer, walks every day, gardens and cans the vegetables he grows. He came to Indiana as a child and remembers threshing wheat where the Greenwood Park Mall now stands, selling his familys vegetables near the Statehouse and helping build a levee on the White River. His daughter, Jan Chaney, credits his routine with keeping him active more than 30 years into retirement. Hes on a schedule, she said. He wants something to do every day. And so he does. Mizes daily routine is filled with work. At 100, he still drives to the grocery store every week and walks 20 minutes a day on the treadmill. He changes bed linens, and during the spring and summer, hes out in the yard, spreading grass seed, weeding the garden and picking flowers, especially roses. He also does minor home repairs, cans vegetables and makes tomato juice. His favorite vegetable to can is green beans. Part of what has kept him in such good shape is how busy he stays, he said. Ive worked hard all my life. Ive always been healthy, he said. Mize had two tumors removed from his liver last fall, ut Im still standing, Mize said. Doctors said theres now no evidence of any cancer. In late , he turned 100. A 2011 Census report estimated about 55,000 people live to become centenarians, and most of them are women. People living to be 100 years old account for less than .02 percent of the U.S. population. Im not thinking a whole lot about it; I take it as it comes, said Mize, a man whos seen many things change on the southside in the past century. Im doing pretty good, considering all the stuff Ive been through the last year, he said, referring to the liver surgery he had in late 2014. I just got through making a big pot of chili — of course, Im the chili-maker around here, Mize said. Mize was born Feb. 27, 1915, in Pulaski , Kentucky, near Somerset, the sixth of 10 children — four girls and six boys. He looks back at his well-lived life and marvels at the milestones hes seen in the world. He remembers seeing a car for the first time. He and other kids ran to the side of the road and marveled at the Model T as it drove by, circa 1923. Progress was in the air in the early 1900s. As automobiles and technology began to become more prevalent — including in the smaller country towns of Kentucky — people began to think of better opportunities for their families. The Mizes were one such family. Mize remembers plenty of farming families moving to Indiana or Ohio to find better economic opportunities. The Mizes traveled to Indiana in search of better jobs, eventually settling on the southside permanently. Mizes parents, Minnie and William Willie Mize, farmed near McFarland Road and Sherman Drive. Mize remembers those early days. In the late 1920s, he and his father would sell produce from their farm at the Indianapolis farmers market around the Statehouse downtown. sold corn, beans, kale, asparagus, tomatoes and their ever-popular lima beans. He attended Southport Grade School, where the Chase bank now stands at Madison Avenue and Southport Road. Like many of his generation, Mize did not finish high school but continued working to help his family. When the Great Depression struck, Mize went out in search of work. One of his first jobs, when he was 17 or 18, was building the levee on Southport Road near the White River. It was one of his first non-farm labor jobs. You always worried (about money), he said. The farms always had work, but the pay was very poor. Worked many jobs. Mize retired in 1981 from GM. He also worked at several other places, including Prest-O-Lite, later called Linde Air, in Speedway. During layoffs from GM, Mize always found work to support his family, his daughter, Jan Chaney, said. He also worked at International Harvester and at the railroad shops in Beech Grove. Mize was employed by Prest-O-Lite when World War II broke out. Because the company was making equipment for the military and because he was already a father of five, he didn serve in the war. Mize had married his wife, the late Edna, in 1938, and Chaney was born in 1939. Seven more children would follow — twins Larry and the late Gary, and Judy, James, Stephen, Phillip and Jane. Throughout his career, he did many jobs, including painting and remodeling work during his time at GM. He worked laying streets on the southside as it expanded south of Winchester village. I had a little part in the road business, he joked. Retirement for Mize didn mean stopping work. In fact, it gave him ample time to devote to one of his favorite hobbies — woodworking. Chaneys house is full of her fathers handiwork. End tables, chairs, cabinets and a dining room set were all made by Mize. When he wanted a larger TV set, he simply cut one of his cabinets in half so it would serve as an entertainment center. To look at Mize, no one would guess hes a man in his 90s, let alone 100. When doctors see him for the first time, they think theres a mistake when they look at his birthday on their charts. I look a lot younger with my cap on, he said. Then you can see my gray hair. Mize celebrated his centennial with 175 people at Jonathan Byrds Cafeteria during two parties with his family, most of whom live in and around Greenwood. Mize said he also enjoys spending time with his 29 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren, and is a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Fredie Fred C. The daughter of the late Thomas and Beatrice (Warren) Whiteman, Betty was born 16, 1929 in New Albany. She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Floyds Knobs and former employee of KMart. Betty was a stay-at-home mom and loved to be surrounded by her family and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alva R. Mix. Survivors include her son, Jack Mix (Peggy); daughter, Jayne Dunn (Barry); grandchildren, Evan and Elizbaeth Mix and Jay (Neda) and Kyle Dunn; and one great grandchild, Leila; brother, Arthur Whiteman (Carol); and several nieces and nephews.
