Obituary: Dr. Frank Joseph Milloy Jr., a prominent thoracic surgeon in the Chicago area, died on 3 in his home after a short illness. He was 86 years old, a devout Catholic, avid history lover, staunch supporter of Ireland, and lifelong bachelor who was loved by many friends and colleagues. In recent years, many of these friends encouraged Dr. Milloy to move to an assisted living facility, but he was steadfast in his desire to live out his days in his modest Glencoe ranch home, surrounded by books and papers on Ireland, medicine, World Wars I and II, and the history of his family from Birr in Offaly, Ireland. He died in his bed, a can of Fanta Orange Soda on the table beside him and the Irish Echo newspaper folded neatly next to his pillow. Dr. Milloy was born on 26, 1924, and was the son of gastroenterologist Dr. Frank Joseph Milloy Sr. and Ola S. (McCabe). He grew up in Phoenix long before the advent of air conditioning and spent his summers in Redondo and other California beach towns, where his family (and many of his fathers patients) migrated to escape the oppressive and 110-degree heat. He loved to talk about sleeping outdoors as a boy, and about how-as an adult--he was never bothered by Chicago heat waves. He enrolled at Notre Dame University in South Bend, Indiana, just before the U.S. entered World War II. graduating with a BS in 1946, Frank entered his fathers alma mater, Northwestern University in Evanston, where he received an MS in 1949 and an MD in 1948. He started his military service in 1942 when he joined the U.S. Navy Reserves, was an apprentice Navy seaman from 1943-45, and worked his way up to Lieutenant Commander in the Navys medical corps. He was discharged in 1953 after serving in the Philippine Islands during the Korean War. He told friends that the longest he was out to sea without cease was six weeks. As a young thoracic surgeon, Dr. Milloy spent much of his time at Cook Hospital, which back then was where the best and brightest practiced, said Sister Sheila Lyne, president of Mercy Hospital in Chicago. If you had something wrong with your lungs, you wanted Frank, said Sister Sheila. Dr. Milloy was an intern at Cook Hospital from 1947 to 49 and resident from 1953 to 57. From 1956 to 1960, he served as Asst. Chief of Surgery at a TB Sanitarium on Taylor St. and has been called upon for his expertise during recent TB outbreaks. Dr. Milloy also was an attending physician at Presbyterian-St. Lukes Hospital; a member of the staff at University Illinois Research Hospital, clinical associate professor of surgery at University Illinois Medical School; and associate professor of surgery at Rush Medical School. But one of his favorite claims to fame was that he was one of the first Chicagoans to experience deep dish pizza. Frank met Rudy Malnatti when Rudy was working at Unos after World War II, and when Rudy opened Malnattis in Lincolnwood in the early 1970s, Frank introduced the new restaurant to many of his friends. When Frank died, there was a Malnattis pizza box in his refrigerator. Joanie Barrus , Dr. Milloys secretary and friend for many decades, said he went into practice with Robert Jensik and Willard VanHazel in 1960 and had privileges at Pres. St. Lukes and the University of Illinois in Chicago. In 1968 he went on his own and joined the staffs of Mercy Hospital, Highland Park Hospital and Lake Forest Hospital. He retired in 1992 but continued writing articles and chapters on the history of Chicago medicine, most recently about Cook Hospital. He was a member and leader of several organizations, including American of Surgeons (member); Society Medical History Chicago (president); Cook Hospital Surgical Alumni Association; Karl Meyer Surgical Society (secretary); Warren Cole Surgical Society (past secretary); Illinois Thoracic Surgical Society (past president); Society Thoracic Surgeons; Am. Chest Physicians; International Society Surgery; Chicago Surgical Society; Univ. Club (Chicago); Metropolitan Club; Knights of Malta, and Phi Beta Pi. Dr. Milloy regularly attended St. John Cantius Parish, 825 North Carpenter Street, Chicago, preferring the Latin Mass. His Mass will be held there on , 8 at 10 a.m. with visitation prior from 9 a.m. until time of Mass. He will be buried in his Knights of Malta cloak at Ascension in Libertyville.
