Obituary: Glenn E. Miller, 6/11/19 - 8/3/15 Glenn Edwin Miller entered this world on 11, 1919, in a little house on the sagebrush flats south of Bellevue, Idaho in what was known as Poverty Flats. He left this world with his mind still sharply intact, but his body worn out on 3, 2015, after 96 years of living a full life. Glenns childhood was poor in the sense of material wealth, but richly overflowing with life in the early days of the Wood River Valley. He learned to shoot a gun as soon as he was big enough to hold one, helping to put meat on the table as he grew up. Because times were tough, he was limited to a certain amount of ammunition at a time and was chastised if he wasted any by missing a shot. Due to this, along with his innate skill, he became a world class shot with any type of firearm, be it rifle, pistol or shotgun. Glenn graduated from Hailey High School in 1938. In 1939 Hitlers armies marched into Poland. On 19, 1941, Glenn and several other young men from Hailey drove to Boise to enlist. He said Chase Clark, who was the governor of Idaho at the time, came to shake their hands, told them how proud he was of their supporting the military efforts, and told them if they ever needed anything to let him know. Glenn had many a chuckle over that while sitting in fox holes in New Guinea. Glenn chose the Army where he served with the 141st Infantry, 163rd Sunset Division. The Sunset Division became McArthurs crack division in the South Pacific earning a Presidential Unit Citation. This outfit was composed of young men from Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Montana. Many were crack shots, but few were as skilled as Glenn. That skill served him well as he fought with McArthurs forces all across the South Pacific Theater. He was with McArthurs troops who were flown over the Owen Stanley Range from Port Moresby to the Dobadura Airstrip, leaving him with a reluctance to fly that lasted his lifetime. He was on every beach landing that the Army made in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Very few of the original group which left Fort Lewis in 1942 made it back home. Glenn was coming home on the Queen Elizabeth when the atomic bombs fell on Japan. He was honorably discharged on 17, 1945 with a Bronze Star, Distinguished Unit Badge, and Staff Sergeant Stripes. As many who served in WWII, the war shaped his life in ways that we will never be able to fathom. Following the War, Glenn again followed his love of guns to Denver, CO to attend a gun-smithing school with his GI Bill. It was there that he met, feel in love with, and married his wife of 55 years, Marjorie, who was the secretary at the school he attended. She had come west from Pennsylvania for an adventure. She fell in love with the Idaho boy, and stayed in the West the rest of her life, preceding Glenn in death on 15, 2002. Unfortunately, the school went out of business before Glenn could finish his schooling, so having lost his GI Bill, and not having a job, he returned to Hailey, Idaho with his new bride, and went to work cutting meat in the market at Ketchum. a brief time in Hailey he and Marge moved to Oregon where he was also employed as a meat cutter. Oregon was not to his liking though, so he once again moved back to Idaho, landing in Boise where their daughter, Nancy was born in 1952. In 1963 the family moved one final time to Twin Falls, Idaho where Glenn managed the meat department for the Okay Store, then transferred to Butterys when Okays went out of business. He worked for Butterys until he retired. He loved the Magic Valley area, especially the country south and north of town, choosing to live the rest of his life in Twin Falls. Even though Glenn was not able to follow his heart as a professional gunsmith, he was constantly working on guns of his own as well as helping out friends with fixing their guns. He had an inventive mind with an amazing imagination. He could fashion wonderful things out of bits and scraps of materials, as well as fix almost any problem with a gun. Glenn was a steadfast friend to many people. He had many life-long friendships, a rare gift in our disposable society. He never met a stranger. He was equally conversant sharing a meal with a sheep herder in a sheep wagon out on the range, or a rocket scientist. He was extremely well-read with a quick mind, amazing memory and vast interest in just about any and everything. He was a consummate and entertaining story-teller. His blue eyes would twinkle or sometimes fill with tears as he shared his stories. In his later years he became a prolific writer of poetry sharing his poems with friends and family. He touched the lives of many people. His love of guns and hunting was seconded only by his love of fishing. He had many fishing buddies as well as hunting partners. His number one hunting, fishing, and all-around pard, however, was his daughter, Nancy. Their first hunting expedition took place when she was three-days old when he took her rabbit hunting outside of Boise. He eagerly taught her to shoot, hunt, fish, and shared his love of the outdoors with her. He taught her to love and respect nature and the creatures in it with the same passion he had. This legacy has now been passed down to his grandchildren. Glenn was a multi-faceted, multi-talented individual. He was intelligent, independent, self-sufficient, and single-minded. He was a perfect example of he greatest generation. He was continued... |
