Obituary: Lois Conner Martin 1918 - 2014 Lois Conner Martin, age 96, died at 8:53 am on , 19, 2014 at an Assisted Living Facility in Meridian. She died peacefully, loved by family and listening to the scriptures, prayers and songs that had inspired and guided her throughout her life. She leaves a legacy of dedication to the transforming power of education and music, combined with deep Christian faith, free spirit, an innocent trust in the innate goodness of people, and great compassion and kindness. She leaves a living legacy in the lives of people whom she touched, people from many cultures, beliefs, and backgrounds. Lois is an example of a life well invested in virtues that are eternal: Faith, Hope and Love. . GROWING UP YEARS Lois was born on 10, 1918 in Los Angeles, California to her parents Clarence (C.L.) and Muriel (Peggy) Conner. She was raised as an only child in Taft, California where her father worked for Pacific Gas and Electric . There, Lois and her family enjoyed frequent visits to San Jose in the summer to pick fruit and vacations to Sequoia National Park, a place dear to Lois heart. Lois excelled in music at an early age and was able to offer piano lessons at age 14 and play the organ and piano at the First Methodist Church of Taft as a teenager. A BEAUTIFUL AND TALENTED YOUNG LADY Lois attended the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Southern California, graduating in with a Bachelor of Arts in Music as well as her California Teaching Credential. If music was her passion, then teaching was her definite calling. Her first teaching assignment in , 1940, was in the grape vineyards and orchards of Arvin. Her first classroom of 10 children was, provided by pioneering Kern Superintendent Leo B. Hart, as part of the Arvin Federal Emergency classroom system set up to aid the ‘Dust Bowl children refugee immigrants from the great Oklahoma agriculture disaster. Lois remembered how she and the children would go to local Arvin stores and ask for donations of nail ‘kegs to cut in half for use as seats and desks for their classroom. WITH HUSBAND AND FAMILY In 1940, Lois also met the love of her life, Herbert L. Martin, of Houma, Louisiana. Herbert, a student at Taft Junior , had come to Taft at the invitation of his older brother, Rev. /Dr. B. Joseph Martin who pastored the local First Methodist Church. Though Lois did not like Herbert at first, he matched her independent spirit measure-for-measure and the two were soon married by Rev Martin at the Methodist Church on 26, 1942. A newlywed household of limited means, Lois would use orange crates from the orchards which, when covered with a table cloth, made a perfect coffee table and other furniture with upon which she entertained school administrators. Herbert and Lois did not have long to make a home in the area, as they were forced to move to Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas where Herbert began his training which would leave him managing a Medical Advanced Surgical Field Hospital on the battlefields of Italy and North Africa during World War II. During those 2.5 years apart, Lois returned to Taft to live with her parents, taught Third Grade in Fellows, California, and played organ and piano for the Methodist Church. When Herb returned from the war in , 1945, he and Lois moved to Bakersfield and began their family, with their first son, Paul Eugene born in of 1947. In 1949, Lois and Herb and little Paul, moved to Oklahoma City were Herb attended Oklahoma City University where his brother Dr. Martin was an official. It was there, on 8, 1950, their second son, Jon Charles, was born. A FAMILY OF EDUCATORS Upon Herbs graduation with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, the family of four returned to live in Oildale, California where Herb became an administrator for Bakersfield High School and Lois resumed teaching at Beardsley Elementary School in Oildale. Lois also played the organ at several Methodist Churches in the area. In the next many years as a growing family, Lois and Herb raised two sons alongside of horses, cows, dogs, cats, pigeons, and one old crippled owl they found in the fields around their home. Lois began to expand her music abilities by teaching piano and organ, both privately and at Bakersfield Community . She also taught High School Special Education and Adult School for Bakersfield High School while Herb assumed the position of Vice Principal of this school of 3, 600 students. It was during this time, that Herb and Lois became ‘parents to Bernhard Bernie Rey, a Methodist Youth Foreign Exchange student who lived with the Martin family. Bernie, who later became Dr. Rey, a medical doctor in Switzerland, was thoroughly ‘adopted into the family and, in Lois later years, would visit her home with his wife, Elizabeth, and son, Mark. Soon, Lois would add two Daughter-in-Laws, Pat (Jon) and Sun Son (Paul) as well as two devoted grandchildren, Christy and Tim. In addition to raising her family, Lois was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, First United Methodist Church, and First Presbyterian Church of Bakersfield. She also played the church organ for special services in both churches as well as for Mish in Bakersfield. Lois found time to be involved in Clipper Club at the church, the Organists Guild, and was especially delighted to be a member of the PEO Sorority. THE LATER YEARS upon Herberts death in 1983, Lois main focus was caring for her mother and father in her home. Lois then lived with great independence in her own home where she cared for her father and mother until their deaths. She enjoyed close relationships with her relatives in Bakersfield, her neighbors like Anne and Alice, her many church friends, her PEO sisters and her friends in the education profession.
