Obituary: Franklin Means, 88, a beloved family man passed peacefully away Jan 20, 2016 in Tempe, AZ. He was born to Franklin Means, Sr & Crystal Means on 6, 1927 in Marysville, Ohio. He was a child of the Great Depression and lost both of his parents before graduating from High School. One story from his youth is that of his Christmas present to his mother shortly before she died. He had worked the previous summer after school and saved up enough to pay off some of her medical bills. Those bills, marked paid in full was his gift to his mother that Christmas. Always the entrepreneur, at age six he dug worms and sold them as bait to Union fishermen. Throughout his youth he also had a paper route, was a delivery boy and owned/operated an ice cream cart. He graduated from Marysville High School in the spring of 1945 and was immediately inducted into the United States Navy and was sent to the Great Lakes Naval Training Station outside Chicago, IL. By then, the war in Europe was over and the war with Japan ended before he arrived in San Diego to be shipped out for the anticipated Battle of Japan. Instead, he was assigned duty on a cargo ship bound for the South Pacific and the Philippines. In his pursuit of unusual endeavors he was an apprentice at Weir from 1946 to 1948. Following his apprenticeship, he attended the Cleveland Academy of Mortuary Science and graduated in 1949. He returned to Weir where he worked as the funeral director/embalmer for the next 2 years. Since at that time he both lived and worked at the funeral home, a decision was made in 1951 that a funeral home was not where he wanted to raise his family. In 1951, he purchased a 50% interest in a meat packing business in Delaware, Ohio. He and his brother Ken operated the Delaware Packing where they did custom butchering for the local farmers and provided wholesale meats for the surrounding grocery stores. In 1963 he purchased a down and out country road house/bar and turned it into a destination restaurant, the western themed Branding Iron Restaurant. leaving Ohio and moving to Arizona in 1969, he worked in the real estate industry as a salesman and rental property owner until his retirement in 1985. Frank was the youngest of 10 children and his brothers (Joe, Lawrence and Ken) & sisters (Erma, Margaret, Mary, , Helen and Mae) found Christmas to be hard to get together so they established the Means Family Christmas Party that was held on a week or so before Christmas, rotating the host family all over Ohio, from Springfield to Cleveland. With the 10 siblings, spouses and 36 nieces and nephews, it was quite a crowd, with everybody drawing a name to see who they would get a gift for the next year. Good food, good Christmas cookies and a good time was had by all. Frank began his own family life and his 67 year marriage to Roberta Asman on Sept 12, 1948. In 1950, his first son Michael was born followed by his second son Timothy in 1953. He spent several years as the Pack Master of his sons Cub Scout Troop. Frank was very active in the Lions Club where he was a Past President and Lion of the Year. He served on the Board of Directors at his church in Delaware, Ohio, St Marks Lutheran Church. In 1969, he made the life changing decision that he did not want to spend the rest of his life in the cold and dreary mid west winters. He decided to leave his entire extended family in Ohio and with no job or connections move to Arizona to start a new life in a different climate. selling the Branding Iron Restaurant he and his family moved to Tempe Arizona, a decision he never regretted. Frank & Roberta did love to travel! In 1966, they took their 2 sons on a three week road trip to California, making a big circle across the middle of the country to San Francisco, down to LA (where they visited his sister & family), over to Las Vegas and then down to El Paso (where they visited Roberta's sister & family). Proceeding on across Texas to New Orleans and back up to Ohio. There would be many more road trips, to Washington DC, Michigan, Florida and Canada to name a few. Once they discovered cruising, however, it was off to see the world. 27 cruises later, they had seen the Amazon in Brazil, Australia, Vietnam, Indonesia, most of the Caribbean, Europe, Russia, Alaska, Hawaii, the Panama Canal, the Mexican Riviera, fall colors on the St Lawrence Seaway and much more. In 1971 Frank & Roberta joined the nearly new King of Glory Lutheran Church in Tempe and have remained members ever since. have seen and helped their church grow from humble beginnings to a 3000+ membership today. In 1980, he had his first grandchild, Ginger to spoil. That was followed by grandsons Ryan in 1987 and Alexander in 1988. From that first day in 1980, he was a devoted and loving grandpa. His joy was compounded when he welcomed his great grandson Ayden in 2011 and great granddaughter Lucy in 2013. |
