Obituary: Eleanor Marshall-White passed away on 29, 2016 in Peoria, Arizona at the age of 88 of colon cancer. She will be remembered as a cherished and much loved mother, grandmother, sister and wife. Eleanor was born, Lucille Eleanor White, in Sycamore, Illinois, to Lucy Ellen Scales White and Thomas Marshall White. She grew up in Lakewood, Ohio and graduated from Lakewood High School. She received her BA Degree from DePauw University at Greencastle, Indiana and her Masters in the Teaching of English from the University of South Carolina at Columbia. Her 1949 marriage to Ralph James Weiger produced their three children: Lucy Ellen, Barbara Julia and Ralph James Weiger, Jr. Eleanor was always proud of the fact that all three girls received their Master Degrees the same summer of 1978: Lucy in Public from Yale University, Barbara in the playing of the harp from Juilliard, and Eleanor in teaching of English at the University of South Carolina. It just disproves the old adage, You can teach an old dog new tricks! shed say. She was also married to Robert Salisbury for ten years. being a stay-at-home Mom for twenty years, Eleanor began her teaching career, which spanned the next forty years. She always referred to herself as a Late Bloomer and used her own life as a model for other women to seek rewarding careers later in life. She began her teaching career in the Summit, New Jersey School system, as first a teacher of English for seventh graders, then on the high school level for seniors. moving to Beaufort, South Carolina, she taught Drama, Speech, English, Journalism, and Creative Writing at Battery Creek High School where she was also the sponsor of the yearbook, newspaper, and where she was named Teacher of the Year. She taught English at Beaufort High School and Limestone Extension. She was proud of being the sponsor of the National Honor Society, the creative writing book, The Magic Bus, and the senior class. It was during these years that Eleanor was a weekly contributor to the Low Country Ledger with her insightful, yet humorous column entitled The Owls Nest. In 1991, she published a book entitled, Women: Catalysts for Change, interpretive biographies of Shirley St. Hill Chisholm, Sandra Day OConnor, and Nancy Landon Kassebaum. The book shows how each of these women had to overcome personal difficulties before achieving success in careers previously dominated by men. Eleanor was invited to Washington, D.C to interview these outstanding women and she received high praise by them for her book. The book is still available on Amazon.com. For the writing of this book, Eleanor received grants from the American Association of University Women, and the South Carolina Arts Commission. her retirement in 1994, Eleanor moved to Sun City West, Arizona where she continued to teach at Glendale Community for the next 13 years as an adjunct instructor of English 101 and English 102. She retired at age 80. In her spare time, Eleanor enjoyed acting and singing in theater productions. She appeared or was associated with such productions as Guys and Dolls, The Music Man, Plaza Suite, Never Too Late and Our Town. She appeared locally in Mornings at Seven with the Sun City Players. Eleanor is a member of the National Society of the American Revolution (DAR). She has been an active member of Faith Presbyterian Church and Moderator of the Presbyterian Women, until illness forced her retirement. She also enjoyed attending Chapel at services at Sierra Winds where she lived. Eleanor is survived by: her sister, Miriam White Jacobs and her children, their spouses and grandchildren; Lucy Weiger and her husband, Robert Crane; Barbara Weiger Lepke-Sims and her husband Michael Sims;Ralph James Weiger Jr and his wife, Pamela and their children Cassidy, Dominick, Jasmine, and Khalil; and her two grandsons, Stephen James Lepke and wife Sarah and Thomas John Lepke and his wife Geena. There will be a celebration of her wonderful life at 2pm on , 16, at the Sierra Winds Chapel, 17300 N. 88th Ave, Peoria 85382,to be followed by a reception where all will have an opportunity to share their memories. |
